It's for Gaming

What costs in the 200-300 dollar range, every family has one, and kids use them? Game consoles.

I bet this happens. 299, non-retina display, and 16 GB of storage sounds right to me. How about for a name? iPlay sounds like a good name.

And yes, it would also be better for buses, reading in bed a gazillion other places. Schools and e-textbooks are also clearly in their sights.

Finally, why does anyone assume they'd lose money selling these things? They'd be using screens about half the size and the same dpi as the original iPads. Screens are what cost them the most historically.

This one is money in the bank, and they'd be dumb as rocks not to do it.

A 7" tablet with the price of a 3.5" iPod touch. Yeah, right.

A company with $100 billion cannot pull it off, yeah right!

most of forum guys are talking like a Apple Investor.

There is a market for 7" Tablet only if the software support it, I love my Kindle Fire I wish it had better software and 1024x768 screen.

I think Apple go with 7.85" that give enough to see most of the elements with 1024x768.

price point i would say $299 (not $249) or they may sell the 8GB for $249 and 16GB for $349 to make way profit.

both iPod touch and iPhone will go either 4" or 4.3" screen.

you have all the bases covered.

I've seen the idea that Apple breaks even on iTunes, but I've never seen it published with cold hard data. Perhaps it was something that Peter Oppenheimer said at one of the quarterly conference calls back in the day.

I believe I've seen it in the quarterly reports as well. Yes, they eek out a small profit, but it is not insanely profitable as some people claim. It is very close to break even.

This rumour keeps coming back, and has yet to actually come true. Nevertheless, should it happen, I'd probably actually buy an iPad. I really like the size of my Kindle (3), and this seems pretty close to it.

I've yet to really be able to justify buying an iPad. The price is just too high for what I'd do with it, and I do find them a bit big.

It also serves as a form of fly-paper for users, so there's an additional financial cherry for Apple in it.

never used the kindle and i'm not sure of the 7 inch is or the 9 inch is the perfect size,i just don't like the fact ppl call it iPad mini when it's only smaller by 1.85 inch.

remember those 6-inch iProduct rumors? it would make sense if they released a 6-inch iPad with $249 starting price....7.85 is just so close to the current size 9.7.

maybe

I'm warming up to the idea we may see an 8" iPad, but not at this price point.

My guess would be a 1024x768 screen in the smaller form, 8GB, WiFi only, at a $299 (entry) price point, and going up from there.

Just throwing this out there, since it is several months away and production is typically 3-6 months before release.

What if the iPhone 5 and the iPad Midi both have the "new A6"? I am thinking quad core, low power, low ghz, stacked memory and possibly a single stack of GPU!

A power sipping powerhouse chip. It might be the way.

Rocketman

What if? Die shrunk aux sidestep chips.

Ok, I'm tired to read through all the comments, but here are some things, which I consider as facts:

1) Even though Apple said that time, when Galaxy Tab came out, that the 7 inch tablet is a mistake, it's quite easy to imagine that they're making now a 7 inch iPad. They've said too, that they're never gonna make a notebook smaller than 13". Then they came out with the 11" MacBook Air, which was/is a huge success (also because its fairly cheap price tag - at least compared to the usual MacBook prices). I believe that a 7" inch iPad would be also fantastically successful.

2) I won't have Retina display (at least not now). The "old" 1024*768 resolution for an even smaller screen would be fairly enough (= higher pixel density), and this way the price tag could be also quite friendly.

3) How could you compare the iPod Touch to an iPad? In my opinion iPod Touch is almost a useless product. It doesn't make any sense. When you're at home it's too small to be convenient. When you're on the go, it's useless, because of the lack of internet connection. It would only make some sense if it had a 3G sim card slot like the iPad.

The fact is, Apple is behind in this market as Kindles and Nooks are starting to proliferate. And by market I mean 7" inch slab--the iPad is definitely a different category of device.

At the same time, iPhones are too popular to have exclusive feeling attached to them anymore. The Apple brand needs to deliver a device in the same category as the Nook and Kindle, but priced higher to keep people thinking "luxury/cool."

The only problem in this whole scenario is the touch. Bye-bye Mr. touch!

As someone suggested up-thread, a 150 dollar Nano would fit nicely.

so, let me think if I understand well.

Apple will be tweaking and messing with the only gadgets Steve Jobs left because is no one there capable of introduce a new device? is that what this is about????

iPhone 4>iPhone 4S>iPhone 4X> The New iPhone> The Other new iPhone!> The.. WE ARE SCREWED iPhone?

iPod Touch XL

I don't think this 7-incher is intended to be a mini iPad, I think it's intended to be the new, bigger iTouch. Fits the development timeline and Apple is about upgrades not downgrades.

Couldn't agree with you more.

With the iPad2 at $399, I see very little demand from gamers and others for the ipod touch 64gb (unless you need to carry a huge library of songs)

With the refurb iPad2 at $319, demand for the ipod touch 32Gb should also disappear

Apple likes to "fill" price points... what is best to fill pricing at $249/$299/$349 than bigger iPod touches (iPod XL) with 8/16/32Gb at these price points ?

It would not have retina display, but could use the same original iPad resolution, less battery and the original A5

Yep, I agree with all you say.

The Touch is the issue/problem as I see it, and, if I'm right and they were to aim a 7" as partly a gaming device, there would be almost no need for a touch whatsoever.

I run quite a bit, and my iPhone is too heavy, bulky and expensive to run with, the touch is light enough but still too big (and rather expensive). Currently I'm using an old Nano, but it sure would be nice to have a Nano/touch hybrid that's small and yet still runs the full iOS. Just a thought.

A 7-inch "iPod Touch" (Grande) would allow Apple to build something bridging the gap between current sized iPod Touch and iPads without having to hear everyone drone endlessly about how Steve said nobody wants a 7-inch tablet. I could see such a size being popular among people requiring POS (ex. restaurant servers which are already using them), among certain medical professionals, very young students, and inventory specialists. However, the vast majority of students and most white collar professionals will still likely gravitate toward iPads for the greater flexibility afforded by a larger screen.

I still wouldn't want one, but it would ensure Apple's continued domination of the tablet space for some time to come. The price point would be the perfect holiday gift to give to the people who truly just want a tablet for lounging around the house (which is apparently what constituted the bulk of Kindle Fire buyers).

If apple starts selling the 7-inch Ipad I would buy one. It would be great for using inside a car- navigation, music etc. But i have doubt that Apple will produce it because they will have to a just the ipod prices.

The site has since offered claims of a smaller dock connector for the next-generation iPhone, an idea which has been gaining traction with other rumors. The site has also issued claims of a fall (likely October) launch of an LTE iPhone anticipated to carry the same 3.5-inch display size seen in all iPhone models to date.

Article Link: 7-Inch iPad with Retina Display Coming in October Priced at $200-$250?

Oh hell yes! :D For ME this is the best news!! the 3.5" screen, but even I don't believe they will change the dock connector?

Oh and I really really don't think they will sell an iPad for that much! It will be higher, they could price it in-between the Galaxy 7" and the Kindle.

No retina Display

I do not think it will be retina display in iPad Mini

1) Shortage - samsung is the only supplier now
2) Battery life
3) need more power to run the display - I think they will stick the 32nm A5 in iPad Mini (not the A5X)
4) save cost also

Apple changing their strategy to become a loss leader in a market that they already dominate? Seems legit...

The ipod touch is kinda useless now that pretty much everyone who is in the market for one has an iphone which can store all your music with itunes match. A $250 7in ipad would be impulse buy territory which is genius. All the ones that cry self cannibalization have obviously not read the Steve Jobs book. Steve was all for that because if they don't do it someone else will. By releasing this they would pretty much take over the tablet market completely like they did with the mp3 player market when they released the ipod mini along the ipod.

Fragmentation

Apple will have a fragmentation issue if they are not careful.

A 7 inch retina iPad would add another resolution for Apps to support. It can't have the Iphone4 resolution since iPhone use 3:2 display and iPad 4:3.

If all devices are released we will have:
Iphone 2g/3g/3gs resolution
Iphone 4/4S
Iphone gen 6 with larger screen (a larger screen without bumped resolution is stupid/something that Android would do)
Ipad 1/2
Ipad 3

Six different resolutions. Not as bad as other platforms, but there are many apps today that is not scaled over the original iPhone resolution.

BTW. If a 7 inch Ipad is released, its another evidence for that Steve Jobs Apple is gone, and Tim Cooks Apple is here. Instead of creating the best products possible and make money, its all about making money.
