Apple today released iTunes 8.2 via Software Update. The update adds support for iPhone OS 3.0, which is expected to be featured at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference next week and be released in the near future.

Registered iPhone developers have been using pre-release versions of iTunes 8.2 since late April in order to test iPhone OS 3.0 betas.

Apple has also released QuickTime 7.6.2, which offers several security and performance fixes.
QuickTime 7.6.2 includes changes that increase reliability, improve compatibility and enhance security. This release is recommended for all QuickTime 7 users.

It seems like Apple has been putting in more protections against "modified" versions of iPhone software. Can anyone confirm that this works w/ jailbroken & unlocked iPhones?

I suspect the original plan was for 3.0 to come out with the new hardware (probably in July).

But now I'm wondering if Apple is expecting a bunch of "iPhone vs. the Pre" articles to be written and want the 3.0 software in people's hands before that happens.

Imagine 1,000 websites with this on it:
Cut and Paste:
Pre - Yes
iPhone - No

...that won't get changed in July when 3.0 comes out! Perhaps Apple is hoping to avoid that by speeding things up and getting 3.0 out now?

???

I just ran software update and I got Quicktime and Garageband update.

No sign of iTunes...

Excellent point. Makes sense too and I can definitely see Apple wanting to put their best foot forward when it comes to comparisons.

This is nothing to do with pre, this is about lightening the load on their servers when they ship iPhone OS 3.0.

I'm running iTunes 8.2b10 from the iPhone SDK (beta 5), but it doesn't see the update. Nor is it in my software update. Is this US only for now?

Can't say I've noticed much difference. Maybe it is a little faster, but it's so hard to tell. I wish they'd work on the shop, even if it were just to have basic tabbed browsing and a wish list.

I doubt it, considering what happened last year. I imagine they'll release the 3.0 software well in advance of the new iPhone to be sure that their servers won't be overloaded again.
