Boy Genius Report has received several tips that Rogers Wireless, Apple's Canadian iPhone partner, is in the process of shipping an 8 GB version of the iPhone 3GS to its retail stores. BGR has also received several photos of what appear to be an internal memo in Rogers' retail computer system announcing the transition to the new model to staff members.
We've had a number of unconfirmed tips over the last few days about this so we figured we'd post it… apparently it seems that Rogers in Canada is in the process of shipping iPhone 3GS 8GB flavor handsets to stores. Again, unconfirmed, no idea on pricing (we have no clue where to start on that) but we felt it was newsworthy to at least let you guys know what we're hearing.
According to the screenshots, it appears that Rogers is attempting to sell through its existing inventory of the 8 GB iPhone 3G before transitioning to the iPhone 3GS as a replacement at the 8 GB level.

Only real attraction to the iPhone 3GS was the 32GB of storage. I want more, not less.

I see no other reason to upgrade other than to get the storage. Speed isn't that big a deal for me - I'd rather have lots of storage than a slightly faster CPU.

The speed was the main reason I upgraded, I generally keep 7 GB of stuff on the phone. I cant say that I would have bought an 8 GB over the 16GB I have now, but I would have considered it if the price was right? The question is, is this a replacement for the 3G or a complimentary device?

I'm guessing it will be announced in September around the time of the new iPods. Announced with little or no fanfare, I might add.

And probably the same price point.

idont believe it.. this is the same source that had iphone video HD and iphone video chat as rumors before the 3gS was released. so i call BS

I can very easily see this happening. Replacing the current $99 iPhone, with an 8 GB 3GS. I just wonder if this is going to piss off a lot of the current $99 iPhone buyers.

I could see them replacing the 8gb 3g to an 8gb 3gs for $99 at the iPod event in September...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

149? Replacing 99 3G?

I'd probably get this one for my wife. She doesn't need that much storage space, but would love to have the video recording capabilities. At $149, it would be a tough sell. I think it would more likely be the $99. The current strategy might be to sell through existing inventories of the 3G and then go to an all 3GS lineup.

Perhaps a $149 price-point?

This is what I was thinking. However, at $149 I think the majority of people would just spend the extra $50 and get the 16GB. If this is true I think we will see the 8GB go the same way of the 4GB iPhone. The only way I think this could work is to keep it at $99.

Are they going to phase out the 3g completely? Why would anyone spend $99 on a 3g if a 3GS is only $50 or so more?

Either that or they drop the 3g down to $49. Whoa. New RAZR anyone? (except that most parents won't get a data plan for their kids)

It will, and Apple won't want that, as they may be fored to give away iTunes Credit.

If it's $99 yes! My Verizon contract is about to expire this month so I'm looking forward for the 8GB 3Gs since I don't need that much storage.

Trust me, 8GB fills up fast. Your apps, contracts, and even photos alone take up some space. Once you add in your music and may be a video or two that will fill up the space even more.

Apple should just do two storage: 16Gb and 32GB. No need to add more bloat and confusion.sure some may not need all that space, but its there when you will need it.

Hope this rumor is false. (hence, my "negtive vote" on the FP)

Whatever happens, the least expensive iPhone will remain $99. For Apple and AT&T, the "$99" was and is a huge marketing milestone. It's plastered all over AT&T's website: "iPhone. Starting at $99." It is very important to AT&T and Apple to be able to keep that advertising ammo.

I think those 8GB iPhone 3Gs, where kept being sold as Apple could have had excess in inventory and the only way to clear them out was thru the $99 sale.

I can see the 3GS being sold in the 8GB configuration. However, I don't think it'll stick at $99. It'll be something like $149.

Maybe Rogers is doing the right thing here?

From what I understand Rogers has a faster system than AT&T so maybe they are doing the right thing here by switching to iPhone with the improved 3G radio. It may simply be a low cost way to provide better service for it's low end customers.

AT&T seems to have this fear that it's network can't handle iPhone and all the apps that could leverage it. Maybe Rogers dimply has a better network and fewer fears.

Or this could simply be a leak.

$99??? STILL TOO EXPENSIVE. APPLE IS MAKING A FORTUNE AT MY EXPENSE.

(In before all the commenters from the previous thread regarding Apple's iPhone profit margins)

Apple should supply the proletariat with free iPhones and pay us a subsidy to use them, comrades. It's the only just solution.

What are you people storing on your phones anyway?!

Good question. I have 13.1GB free out of 14.3GB total. 0 songs, 0 videos, 200 photos, 15 apps. I guess I keep all my music on my 30GB iPod so I have lots of free space.

You can never have too much horsepower or storage capacity.

I remember when my dad bought a new Dell and it had a 6 gig hard drive. "SIX GIGS?" I gasped? "What do you need all that space for???"

Ah, nostalgia. :)
