8GB for $99 Would be Great

I've been waiting until this December for my Verizon contract to run out so I can get a 3GS, but if they offer a 8GB for $99 I would pay to cancel my Verizon contract early.

Plus I have a 8GB iPod touch that I am going to sell when I get the iPhone - so I'll sell that for $100 and that would pay for my phone. So basically I would be paying $170 out of my pocket to cancel my contract - still sucks but it would be a lot cheaper than the other option, and I'm getting restless waiting to get an iPhone. I have a LG Venus and it works but I can hardly read the screen anymore.

My 8GB touch seems like a good size I don't watch movies on it, but I do watch some TV shows and I just swap out music from my library when I get sick of what's on it - since I plug it into my computer everyday to charge anyways so it's no big deal.

Woohoo!

I want an iPhone for the 3G data access. The phone and application aspects are rather useless to me.

Unless you happen to know of a mobile internet device that would allow me to browse online while in store that won't break the bank.

You make it sound like I'm full of RAGE over it.

If the phone and application aspects are useless to you, then why would you want an iPhone?

Just go to any carer website (ATT, Sprint, verizion) search under smart phones and use the "price low - high"

If just going on the internet is your main concern, and you dont want a phone, good luck finding one, don't think they make them,

Alas it's all subsized, huge netbooks.

To be honest I wonder if you read my earlier post because I stated my current provider (T-Mobile), the price I pay ($25/year for 120 minutes), and what I'd like to do with an iPhone. (price check online over 2/3G in store before buying).

How did we end up here if your suggestions were Boost Mobile at $50/month or a prepaid phone which I already have?

Damn Apple is smart, lol.

Selling a 8GB 3GS for $99 with a 2-year contract
Selling a 16GB 3GS for $199 with a 2-year contract
Selling a 32GB 3GS for $299 with 2-year contract

Man, $100 for a 3GS is a STEAL in my opinion. I, for one, don't need all the extra space. I could never use up my 8GB, lol. I have 12 GBs left with my 16GB 3GS...no idea what to do with the extra space, lol.

So 8GB to 16GB is a 8GB storage gain for $100, while 16GB to 32GB is a 16GB storage gain for $100. Hm. I think the 8GB 3GS, provided it exists, will be $149.99.

So you want a netbook then? Then go ahead and get one. find one on e-bay if you want to get one so cheep.

I did see that, but I also saw that you were complaining about the iphone being so much and wanting a internet device.

and we were at the boost mobile thing a page ago. like 10 or so posts back.

anyway we are getting back on topic. Lets get back on it shell we?

It will there when you need it.

You can actually get a smart phone through Verizon without a voice plan. You pay for the data plan and if you make any calls, you get charged per minute. $50 / mo unlimited data + 25c per minute for voice calls. $5 more gives you unlimited SMS & MMS

Will this be a Rogers only deal or will this be widespread? Also I wonder if it will be $99 or something higher...

That would be about as much as I (the consumer) would be willing to pay for something that would be...

Twice as fast, 4 times less storage...

Seems a little backward to me, but hey, we'll see.

ok then, That solves that one guys problem. Show him the link and lets move on!

I'd be interested to hear where Apple is making all of their money with the iPhone if it isn't from selling...the iPhone?
Application sale and contract kickbacks. Not that I'm going to target Apple for selling hardware cheap and making it back via phone subscriptions. It's the order of things.

I'm just surprised with the way you replied like you did. I spelled everything out in my earlier post only to repeat myself to you, again.

Saying "Alas it's all subsized, huge netbooks." doesn't make it sound like I want one does it?

Wow, thank you for the first solid response. A bit pricy but a step in the right direction!

Ok, so you want an iPhone without the phone. That's called an iPod Touch.

No contract necessary, wifi so that you can comparison shop to your heart's content.

2 year contract ?

I'd even be willing to spend $149 for the 8gb if I could get this thing on a 2 year contract in Canada. I've been holding off buying an iPhone in Canada simply because there is no way I am locking into a 3 year contract. Any one else holding out till a Canadian Provider offers the iPhone on a 2-year ?

The 2-year-contract is pretty much industry standard for devices in this category these days.

What sucks is how AT&T nickel and dimes you on services that should be free (or close to it) like text messaging. 20 cents for a text message? WTF???

It's like that bogus email about Congress trying to pass a law charging you for every email you sent. But in this case it's true!

Not to mention their obvious behind-the-scenes squelching of particular apps they feel competes with them (though I'm sure Apple shares plenty of the blame in this area).
Apple is making their money from AT&T. Most people don't understand this.

In all honesty... people need to give AT&T a break. The mindset that Apple is the good guy taking some kind of loss is bogus.

Here's a secret for everyone: AT&T PAYS FULL PRICE TO APPLE FOR THE iPhone!!!! When they are received into inventory, here's what AT&T pays:

8GB 3G: $474.99
16GB 3GS: $574.99
32GB 3GS: $674.99

It's not Apple lowering the hardware costs, or Apple eating the subsidy.

AT&T eats $400 for every iPhone purchased. Granted, the data plan is a bit pricey. However, consider that any other phone AT&T sells gets a max of a $150 discount in-store for a 2yr contract, with the max of a $100 mail-in rebate. iPhone customers get a huge break on the phone price. The data plan costs get reinvested into improving the network for the absolute hell that the iPhone unleashes on the cell towers. An example of this: AT&T invested over $100 million in the pacific northwest alone in 2008 for network improvements and fixes.

For those who don't know, the iPhone doesn't compress data like other smartphones do. It eats it up like cheetos. Every iPhone is like having a laptop tethered on the network and for people who think any other company's network could handle it, you're sorely mistaken. Verizon's EV-DO network would get absolutely owned with the data slam that the iPhone causes.

Not trying to be an AT&T fanboy, just defending the easy target. If you want more info on my opinion, PM me.

No 3G!

Maybe I should have said that I should wait for the iPod Touch to get 3G!

I'm sure there's open, free 801.x everywhere too.

Twice as fast as what with 4 times less storage?

You mean; 1.5 times as fast as a 3G, with 1/4 the storage of the 32GB 3GS.

You can't make a valid comparison using three separate items without identifying what you're talking about. You also can't say "4 times less" since 'times' is a multiple. Talking about a 32GB 3GS and saying "4 times less" is essentially saying "128GB less" which is obviously not possible.
