I can't find a better place to add this info, but i have a reliable source that says Apple will release FCP 6 at NAB, and make a joint announcement to team up with the folks at RED to support the RED camera natively. That is very big news for filmmakers and those in pro video.

I've heard rumblings like this too - and it doesnt help that RED's booth is RIGHT NEXT to Apple's booth on the NAB show floor. I got a buddy who is going to the event sunday morning at NAB so I'll be waiting for his call to tell me what went down.

Wow. Alot of hype for something that should have been added as a config option 3 months ago. I mean for real man, that quad chip is on freakin newegg right now and has been for months.

No, LOOOOOONG overdue.

Won't Be Two Octocore Models

Probably something like this.
2.66GHz 8 core Clovertown Mac Pro
2GB (2x1GB)
500GB Hard Drive 7200-rpm Serial ATA
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT
price: $2999

2.33Ghz 8 Core Clovertown Mac Pro
1GB (2x512MB)
250GB Hard Drive 7200-rpm Serial ATA
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
price: $2599
Dream on. No way will they offer two speeds. And you can't run 8 cores with 1GB of ram. It is much more likely to be your first guess +

3GHz Quad $2499
2.33GHz Quad $1999

SO-DIMMs

Does anyone know if the new mac pro would have fb-dimm or so-dimm? Is it the processor or the motherboard that dictates the type used? Now that I'm on the subject, what exactly is the difference? I hear fb-dimm is better suited for servers or situations where there is lots of parallel information, while so-dimm is better for a single user environment, where there are fewer tasks but they should be run faster.

SO-DIMM tends to be used in notebooks and other confined spaces (like iMacs). It would not typically be used in a workstation like the Mac Pro. If Apple went away from the FB-DIMMs (and I"m not sure they will -- there are some genuine advantages to it) it would more likely be to normal DDR2 DIMMs found in typical desktop PCs.

Can someone from the UK who is familiar with the Inquirer please provide a little color as to the reputation of the periodical? I went to the website and it seems like it is a mish mash of tech articles that does not have journalistic integrity as a foremost priority. However this very site could be described as just a bunch of silly mac rumors, but it often has very useful insights. As such, any thoughts from those familiar with the Inquirer would be great.

Put it this way... I have a strong feeling that all of the new macs, and iphone, and Leopard and Leopard Edition iLife & Leopard Edition iWork, will all be released on the same day... June 11th... ;) :D Trust me... I am just as reliable as the Inquirer...

I didn´t get the white headphones/badge thing. Will the Pro line be coming out in White? Very doubtful if that is what they meant with the headphones/badge comment.

Although a new enclosure will be a very welcomed adition.

They simply mean that "white" is one of the staplemarks of Apple. white iPods, white earbuds, white iMacs, white MacBooks... It does NOT mean that the new computer is going to be white. You guys are reading WAY too much in to it!

As a regular reader of The Inquirer, I can confirm that they take pride in having really screwy, twisted, wierd and often completely unrelated article titles and 6 word summaries.

They are also, somewhat anti Apple, well at least usually.

I wouldn't trust anything they say about Apple, especially.

They more or less anti-everything. Anti-Linux? Check. Anti-MS? Check. Anti-Apple? Check. The things they are not against, is usually stuff that are too tiny to be relevant :).

Whatever happens it's going to be a busy couple of months at Cupertino. LOTS of stuff to come.

So true. They also seem to like confusing the hell out of everyone with in-joke after in-joke. They seem to take pleasure in creating, well, unintelligible crap.

I suppose the wait is always more exciting than when it actually happens... well...just a conciliatory thought!!

Ever get the feeling that Apple keep an eye on rumor sites like this who reveal a dates and say ha! for that were putting the date back a month !! :)

But seriously, they must be waiting for the NAB final cut release with 8core as a perfect companion.

They may keep tabs these sites looking for inspirations as well... its a process of give and take at its most surreptitious!! :)

Clovertowns were introduced at the above speeds, which is maybe why apple hasn't released 8 core machines, yet, or is a 3Ghz version available now? They would never go down in cpu speed for their top model, at the very least they would want to match it.
As long as that isn't available, Apple will wait. It's that famous MHZ myth that still haunts many users they want to avoid stirring up.

Sure makes a lot more sense - a big demo on the new features of FC then a "one more thing - this is a multi-thread application which will use as many cores as you can throw at it, hence the new Mac Pro Clovertown available as of today for pre-order at apple.com with a free upgrade voucher for... OSX 10.5 Leopard which will be available as of 99/99/9999..."

Etc.

Inquirer's track record says it all. it's not coming today.

OLED iPods...19 inch iMacs....Bwahaha
