Nearly 8 months since an upgrade is outrageous. If nothing else, they should do a GPU upgrade change. The 7300 GT is a joke... $250 extra for a X1900 is a ripoff.

I think they are at a crossroads... w/ the release of Vista. I can get the Dell quad core right now w/ a current GPU. Making customers wait is so lame and its possibly going to alienate their "fan base". My patience runs out on the 15th. I will not get ripped off.

A joke? I think these cards are pretty powerful myself. Okay, technology keeps improving, and there are more powerful cards out there now, and perhaps Apple could adjust their prices to reflect that, but it's not that you can't exactly work with a card like that?
Of course, Apple trying to please the Pro's with a Mac Pro, should upgrade or at least offer the upgrade, but I'd be happy with what they offer now, if I had the funds..... I'll have to wait a few more years before I make the Intel switch, still a G4 PPC user (Mac mini, and PB G4).....

I hope these threads are surveyed by apple - the customer is always right

Apple is screwing customers over with the current price of the Mac Pro. Yes, everyone knows technology moves so so fast and the simple fact is the Mac Pro is worth a lot less now than it was 8 months ago, yet Apple haven't changed the price or upgraded any components since it was introduced.

I think they're waiting for the CS3 release date personally, but even so it's still not quite right to leave products unchanged for so long and expect people to pay the same price.

The black hole of mac related announcements surely must be the calm before the storm because since WDDC 2006 in August the mac has seen very little attention.

Agreed. I think Apple hasn't adjusted to life in the Intel world. They're still in this mode of two product updates a year. That simply doesn't cut it in the intel world. Most manufactures are constantly updating their systems with improved, larger components and lower prices without much fanfare simply to stay competitive. Apple it still shipping 60 gig hard drives in the Mini and Macbook while the more typical standard now is 120gig. And Apple is charging $250-300 upgrade to get a 160gig when you can buy a 160gig drive for $100.

Agreed, Apple should indeed upgrade a little more often, or lower prices, however, that is generally viewed as a "clearance sale", slowing the sales down even further, as people expect something new to come soon.
So upgrading gradually is the best way for Apple. Even if the Mac pro is not changing design, at least by now they could offer quad core processors, as a build to order option. As for hard drives, there is no excuse for 60GB in a Mini, that should at least be a 100GB by now. (And I won't mention the processor..) ....

I agree with dmelgar wholeheartedly as well. I know this topic's been beaten to death, but in order for Apple to compete head to head in the Intel world they need to get a mid-range desktop machine halfway between the Mac mini and the Mac Pro.

Hey now, lets not forget the $1649 Quadro FX 4500!

I agree wholeheartedly. Apple needs to refresh their product line more often. The Mac Pro was released 8 months ago, and there hasn't been one single solitary update to it. How hard is it to offer newer video cards? And don't get me started on FB-DIMMs. I see them being the 2006-2007 equivalent of RAMBUS. People who buy Mac Pros use the machine for production, not as a server. FB-DIMMs are pointless in my opinion. I'm not even going to talk about the quad core stuff as it has been beaten to death already. The X1900xt is obsolete, and has been. ATI has the 1950 out, and on 23 April will be releasing their new video card. nVidia has the 800GTX.

Putting an nVidia 7300GT in a Mac Pro is like buying a Lamborghini and putting four spare "donut" tires on it.

The Apple store is Down...

So, the Apple store is down...

Let's see what's shaking!!!

--Half Glass

Yes, confirmed that U.S. Apple Store is down as of 7:30AM Eastern, Wednesday morning and still down 40 minutes later. Let's wait and see what we get!!

I suppose they did release the last 24" imac on a wednesday, wouldnt be surprised if they release something today. Nevertheless, i doubt anything will pop out.

US store is still down, cool.. maybe. And for the record Modo (3d app) recognized 16 cores in version 202, which isnt even the latest build. Anyone doing 3d, video, and I guess audio work will always be able to bring the latest hardware to its knees.

It's live -- but all I see is an extra CPU option to buy two quad-core 3.0 GHz processors.

Any one notice any other changes?

I'm shocked! Two 3.0GHz quad-cores?! I didn't think they were making the quad's in 3.0GHz... (well, according to macrumors guides...)

I'm sure multi has already ordered one in his sleep on the west coast... :)

Very exciting...8 cores.

Now let's have some Leopard...
