Since Intel lists the fastest quad Xeon as the X5355 at 2.66 GHz, it looks pretty obvious that Apple is overclocking the 2.66 chips.

Intel has a utility to compare the actual clock speed to the rated speed (Windows or bootable) http://support.intel.com/support/processors/tools/frequencyid/ - so soon we'll know if Intel produced a special run for Apple, or if the Cupertino boys and girls have been "mod'ing" ;)

This looks to me like Apple have been given access to the 3Ghz clovertowns early and have decided to add them to the range.

That's outrageous. Absolutely outrageous. Can you not eBay it from the US? I think a lot of people will do that at this rate.

(Also, I really like the pictures on your Flickr page - how's the picture on that TV?)

The picture is great, bad thing is it makes my 20" imac seem like a 12" ibook.

You Can KEEP Your Update Apple - I'm Not Buying

No graphics card updates?? No real updates of any kind, save for a dual quad-core configuration.

What a complete and utter letdown. SHAME ON YOU APPLE!

My first reaction to seeing this was "Wow. Multimedia will be happy."

Is that normal? :p

Glad to see Apple finally giving us some updates. Now lets hope for a great announcement from Intel next week (IDF-Beijing) and some more apple updates by June!

:apple: ShOULd've offered to 8-Core in sleek glossy black metal:apple:
But how much extra would that have costed?

I think if they'd gone as far as to slap another premium on the Octopro there would have been some serious, serious complaints. Like, looking for the car with no license plates and putting Justin Long's head in it.

Although I'm glad this is out; the ice has been broken and hopefully we can start seeing hardware upgrades across the line, as well as some form of Leopard announcement.

Do you guys think the current display spects (contrast, brightness, etc) justify the cost? I was under the impression those things were in need of an improvement...

I was wondering the same thing and I'm tempted to jump on it because I could get the 23" for $799 with educational discount right now (won't work on my G4 so I might wait til I get a MacPro this summer). A coworker bought the the 23" a few weeks ago and he's a serious video-geek and he was very impressed with the black levels and brightness/contrast of the display. They are expensive compared to other monitors but if you're in the photo or video business (even if it's just a hobby) they are certainly worthy of consideration.

Tough price.

I was wondering how power the new Macs consume. I checked my MacPro 2,66 GHz today out of curiosity.

I got

idle 192 Watt and
load 250 Watt.

I bet the new will add some more Watt to that.

What do you use to check your power consumption? Educate me please.

My first reaction to seeing this was "Wow. Multimedia will be happy."

Indeed, I had the same first thought, "I wonder if MULTIMEDIA was awake at 6:22 AM PST when this release finally went official.

But really for the kind of video he crunches, he will still need a lot more power: this box is just an incremental improvement --

Obsolete in 4 months.

Really.

The graphics card is a dealbreaker. Why Apple continues to saddle these machines (which are otherwise stellar) with standard or substandard cards is beyond me.

It's a premium machine at a premium price -- put a decent graphics card in it Apple!

The X1900XT is one of the best cards of the last generation, only a couple of cards were better. Apple have shown in the past that they aren't willing to have a large range of GPUs and aren't willing to update often, which means you are very unlikely to see the latest GPUs (X1950 and 8800 were realsed after the Mac Pro, meaning that the 1900 series were the best option) or the top of the range GPUs ship (no XTX). It seems to me that it's nearly always gamers that want the better GPUs, and to be honest I don't think Apple care about them at all. Like most people I have issues with these policies, but thats the way it has been for a while and seems to look like it will continue to be, so expecting anything else is nothing more than wishful thinking.

I would hate to see a mini tower. It would confuse the market to much. I would like to see a more powerful Mac Mini, but a mini tower no!

Well, "mini" is not really the right word. I'd like to see them take the same MacPro tower but put a Core2Duo in it, lower the specs of the kind of RAM it takes and cut it down to 4 RAM slots, and take out an expansion slot.

Stuff like that. Whatever it takes to lower the price by $1,000. Whatever is left wouldn't be desirable to pros who want a MacPro so it wouldn't hurt those sales. Really, you'd be left with something like an iMac except you could upgrade the video card yourself AND put 2 TB of storage in it.

Maybe its the Xeon X5365 which was supposed to be released in Q3. Intel has been sitting on these waiting to see how Barcelona performs. Apple may have gotten their hands on it earlier ...

Possible, the 3.0 GHz quad is expected in 3 to 4 months:

It would be most unusual, however, for Intel to show such favortism to one vendor. Dell/HP/IBM et al won't be too happy if Apple's getting parts that they can't.

Also note in the DailyTech article that big price cuts are planned for July. I wonder if Apple will pass those along and drop the prices of everything?

The truth is if you don't do heavy graphics or gaming, your old G4 single would be just fine. I do video editing for a living and I just upgraded from my dual G4 to the low end quad intel (not ocho).

People are complaining about cost. When I bought the dual G4 1ghz, it was close to 3 grand!

And I paid $3,600+ for my 500MHz G4.

I love hearing people complain about price and features. I was one of those people (at least about features/hardware) for years and I got stuck in that waiting for 3GHZ G5 club and ending up using my dual 1GHz Quicksilver G4 until last fall. And you know what, the only application that I couldn't run on it was a game! I spend most of my days in Flash, iTunes, Office, mail and iCal and everything worked fine. I upgraded and everything still works fine.

No Stoakley Seaburg for Multimedia

But will he??? Bet you dollars to donuts there's no "Stoakley Seaburg" in there, so my guess is that Multimedia will join the ranks of us unhappy folk.....

ZzzZZzzzzZZzz still no case redesign, still no blu-ray, another boring minor bump product that's way outta the vast majority's pricerange.

What a complete and utter letdown. SHAME ON YOU APPLE!

This isn't the revamp of the Mac Pro, it's a simple additional upgrade option. Apple never said 8 cores were comming, nor did they say a revamp was comming.

The way I understand it

2 x 3.0 Dual Core option is 2 chips in the machine, both chips having 2 cores = total 4 cores.

2 x 3.0 Quad Core option is 2 chips again, only each chip has 4 cores = total 8 cores

each chip runs at 3.0Ghz

...I think

Quite right. And it further means that if the software you're running is highly optimized for multiple processors you may see a very healthy performance boost. For single-threaded applications (apps that don't use more than one CPU core) you won't see any improvement over the older Mac Pro quad.

Back on topic: Still no 8-cores on the UK store. I've been waiting to buy since last October hoping for an improved spec for the 4-cores (8-cores is probably overkill for me). Looks like I should've "done the deed" last Autumn after all... Oh well, at least the wait is (nearly) over!

UK page is down again. Maybe when they pulled it down this morning they just forgot what they were supposed to change. You know, like when you leave your computer to get something, get all the way to the room its in, forget what it was and instead just open the fridge, fix yourself something to eat, take it back to your desk only to get that call from the bigwigs at the US office asking you why you haven't updated the mac pro page on the UK store yet...

It'll be interesting to see how pricey it all is over here.

Can't afford one but I like the new system of updates when they are ready not on Tuesdays only.

Apple will have to, 4 cores drop to 2 core pricing levels. I'd expect a true upgrade to the Mac pro much closer to July now, it will allow similar pricing, new and proven graphics cards and the new chipsets. Them getting 3Ghz clovertowns early could also hint that they might get everything Intel a little early including pricing options. They have left it too late to do anything more thna what they appear to haev done today, before that time.

THought the same thing ...but now I'm guessing 8 cores isn't enough now that it's available ...I'm expecting him to start blabbering about 16 cores now ..or the next generation of chips that will make the 8 cores 10% faster ...and how happy he will be with those because these chips aren't worthy of his massive workload.
