I believe I read somewhere that thos quad core chips are pin compatible with the existing Mac Pros. Can I go somewhere and buy 2 Clovertown CPU's and drop them in my Mac Pro?

Paging Multimedia

Honestly, where is Multimedia?

I remember when I was going through "Where's my C2D Merom MBP?" hell last year he kept me company, waiting patiently as he was for his Clovertown day.

Perhaps he's sitting on a huge clover right now, having rushed to the stores early, and simultaneously encoding 8 videos. Here's to ya!

it's always been 3TB, 4 bays 750GB Drives

No it hasn't. I think that was a silent upgrade too, it was said to come with 2TB in the keynote because the drives only became available about a month after the mac pro dropped. That set the tone for lots of silent mac-mini type upgrades before leaving us waiting for months for the new processor until we assumed a substantial update must be coming, but instead got this.

If you check the UK store prices (which haven't changed, cos the octo core isn't up yet), however, it is true that some of the BTO options have dropped in price, (1gb sticks of ram etc).

How the hell are the prices in GBP and USD exactly the same now? So they're just over £300 in America, but if we live in the UK we've got to shell out £600 (roughly $1000)? That's bull.

Apple really are screwing non US customers and living up to their reputation of overpriced hardware.

I've been waiting for this for a LOOOOOOOOOOONG TIME! Should I click "Order"? That is a LOT of dough!

No way - if you're spending that much, at least get a second hard drive for RAID-1. It's crazy to depend on the reliability of a single flakey mechanism in today's price environment. Switch to Time Machine, presumably, when Leopard 10.5.3 is out.

If your workflow and billable hours are a function of the speed of your Mac, get 3 more and do a RAID 10 setup, along with the octo-cores. $1400 isn't too bad of a hit for doubling the processor core count at all, and ought to quickly pay for itself and enrich you if the above assumption is true.

Lol. Get a large suitcase, book a flight to the states, buy the display, dump in suitcase and fly back. Happy days......if the displays support 240v that is

EDIT: To add pepper to wound, the Cinema Display prices have gone UP!!. I bought mine for 439.45....as of today, its now 488.80!!! (Edu prices btw)

Its 10am EST here and I've not gotten a call about the 8-core yet, however as in the world of technology there are still hold outs as they are waiting for Leopard. As someone mentioned earlier at least the tire kickers can't say they're waiting on the 8-core any longer, so they fall back to the "I'm waiting for Leopard" retreat, LOL.

Yes, but not as much as you think they are, those prices have yet to change is all.

Guess NAB will be all about FCS. Let's hope we see the incarnation of Shake.

I would say the likelihood of there being new displays is greater. This price drop could be an attempt to save the refurb store offloading excess stock over the next couple of months. If Phenomenon is ready, I'll be thrilled, but all the post-production houses who shelled out for $60000 (or whatever it was) for the source code of Shake 4 probably won't be.

MacGasm Pro would be a better name. Hopefully this will bring down the price of some old power macs.

o.k so now what?

People where waiting for this for a long time
but who other then editing companys will need so much power?

i remember seeing people say im waiting for this computer to come out...cant wait... It is here so now what?

Who can really afford this computer for simple web browsing and encoding movies to apple tv?

How shameful of Apple! The current quad line has been the same price for almost a year! Same crappy ram, hd space, and graphics card! WTF! What computer stays the same price with no upgrades for almost a year! What a complete rip off. I love Apple but F this. seriously. An expensive "super computer" with non super parts!

Should we see some well deserved price cuts or upgraded components in the next few months?

Are you stupid or something. Why would a company lower a price to a product if it's selling and there is little or no competition to it. Yes, I said it. Little or no competition to it. Apple is not Dell, who has done long term damage to their company by constantly lowering their prices and changing their system configurations. If that strategy worked they would still be the number 1 computer company, but they're not. I for one would prefer to be the number three or four computer company for a decade than be number one and out of business in five years.

Also the Mac Pro is under a year old! I believe it was announced in August and shipped in September.

I guess I should have mentioned I have a few other drives i'm going to be pulling out of other computers to stick in the thing, plus nightly backups of important folders to an external 300GB Firewire Drive .

Cell-based Final Cut Extreme Workstations at NAB. What else?

Might pick one up if they're under $20 000. My G5 imac's just not cutting it anymore with all the flash sites on the internet these days...

But Dell was #1. I think they slipped to #2, and HP is #1 now? Apple will never be #1 as they charge premium prices.

my point is, Dell hasn't hurt their business by lowering prices. Dell has been hurt by HP lowering theirs.

Sorry, you're right it was 2TB it's now 3TB but I meant that wasn't a today update

Too Much

Is it just me or does it seem like we're really not seeing the performance boost we were promised with the Intel processors? So the 8-core 3Gz Intel Xeon is between 1.3x to 2.1x faster than the 4-core G5?!? Aside from running Windows and just the overall conversion to Intel, there doesn't seem to be a lot of benefit. Sure, cooling and power consumption are much better on the Intel chips, that is definitely great.
But I have to agree with a previous poster here... 1 year for updates and only a top-end addition that is ridiculously over-priced. All models should have dropped about $500 and this should be a good $1K cheaper. The fact that these are priced the way they are makes you kind of wonder if the extra processing power is even justified. Never mind... why couldn't they make ALL PMs 8-core? It seems that there is just too much "margin" on these machines...
