this is a mistake, IMO, for the US market. They should replace the 4s with the 8gig and make that the free phone under contract. If for nothing else just to get rid of the 30 pin connector and put that into history once and for all.

They will once people stop buying the 4s. Reference: iPad 2 being discontinued today.

I get that Apple can charge lots for memory upgrades. Don't like it, but I get it.

But, why would they sell a phone with only 8gb? The cost to put in 8 vs 16gb can not be much money at all. But you now have a phone that will piss people off when they run into memory issues, and they get mad at Apple.

I just do not get it.

How is this any different from the 8 GB 4s that they were already selling? This is being positioned to slide into that price point whenever they discontinue the 4s.

I would say 90% of people who have a mobile in the UK are on subsidised contracts. Im one of very very few who buys their iPhone outright each year and saves money with a sim only deal.

I'm one of those too, I don't even have an off contract monthly PAYG, I just load up £10 credit onto my giffgaff account and get charged per call and message, and I pay almost nothing (my credit lasts at least 2 months if not more). I use iMessage and FaceTime, I get free Wifi at work, school and in many underground stations, I bought my iPhone outright as you did and it works so well. I love not having a big monthly phone payment - when people in the US tell me what they're paying per month, their payments sound like car payments not phone payments!

There are people who are mostly using their phones' stocks apps and are using the storage to just store a couple of apps, a few songs, and some photos. 8 GB is (still) enough for that. Even if they can get 16 GB for the same price they'll probably leave it mostly unused. It's probably not for most people on this forum, but there's a market for these phones.

Armchair CEOs (including me) find this odd, but I have to acknowledge the possibility that Apple knows their various markets better than I do. (And that I know multiple people who astonishingly have way less than 8GB on their phones.)

The time does come for a capacity-bump across the board, though. That time is not "never." NOW is the time in my view: I very much hope to see that with this year's generation.

If price is your number 1 criteria, then Apple will always lose the argument. But for many there are other factors that come into play before the topic of price comes into the equation.

why do we change facts to suit one agenda?

appletv as little attention it has gotten from apple is rather competitively priced although chromecast 3rd party development and forthcoming amazon release may change that a bit. but since its release you would be hard pressed to find a better device cheaper especially if you wanted to use it for xbmc.

mba and imac and the new mac pro from what ive read are more competitively priced compared to what else is available.

the new softwares and suites from apple are rather fair priced.

its really the iphone and the ipad where the difference to competitors is so immense.

I've got a new 4s free with a 2 year contract, I know it's not a 5c but my main gripe is the 8Gb. It's hardly able to store anything at all, I think this is a big mistake.

Yeah right, when you cant sell a product just say it's "intended for emerging markets" and hope you get out with it clean.

Swing and a miss, apple.

Last I knew 16GB of MLC NAND flash was like $12. Bad enough Apple charges $100 for it.

So this is just Apple using consumer psychology to sell derated kit. Kinda evil.

If they could have just dropped the price for £469 to £399 that would have been ideal.

But no, they introduce an 8GB model...8GB!!!! at a price of £429.

Why 8GB? just lower your existing model.

Apple lurves their margins yo

Obviously, this phone is not targeted towards people who'd visit Macrumors. for many people out there, just a slightly cheaper price point will pull them into the Apple ecosystem. And once they're in there they'll start downloading apps and soon realizing that 8GB is way too little. Then guess what happens when the next new iPhone comes out? They jump to 16GB.

Price point seems nutty - especially for the target they are looking for.

Look, I've gotten by with an iPod touch since... the first version, never owned a cell phone, I've kept up with two other iPod touches since then... Works well enough for me.. But I'm potentially looking to replace an old CDMA phone for my wife for a pay as you go option.

iPhones - out of the question. Too expensive, only take the nano sims, while any pay as you go in Canada need the micro sims. I'm not chancing slimming down a card with a file.

The Moto G seems to be a mid-tier (though non LTE) phone that may somewhat compete with the 5C. $150 to buy outright in Canada. $550 difference. Only 8GB non expandable. I've seen online that there are 16GB versions for $20 more out there.

Or buy an Android with SD card support.

8.5% price drop for a 50% drop in storage is kinda stupid.

Apple is just trying to flog off all the unsold 5C they have, the price drop is not enough though, but while they still sell the 4S at 349...... they have themselves in a spot of bother around pricing points. They should just man up and remove the 4S and replace it with the 5C 8GB, lots of happy new apple customers.

Maybe there is genius somewhere in this move, but it sure isn't obvious to me. The cost/value of this 5c seems way out of whack. Apple talks about having the best products period. How is an overpriced, last year tech, too-low storage, small screen device a best product in any way?
