If you're just looking for a cheap phone above all else, then Apple isn't for you.

There are plenty of cheap android phones on the market. They might not work all that great, but hey, at least they're cheap, and that's what is most important.

This is a stupid comment. Especially if you think the Nexus 5 (or 4) is a cheap phone. But keep beating that fanboy drum. That is what is most important.

That's not what I said. There are expensive and good Android phones.

What I said was that if "cheap" is your highest priority, then there are plenty of Android phones to fill that need. There are plenty of cheap, crappy Android phones, but there are no cheap, crappy iPhones.

For somebody who is looking for low cost as their primary criteria, they'd be best served looking at Android phones.

Warp 1, Mr. Sulu! Captain, it's boosting, alright.

I posted "My ass can't innovate anymore" over on MDN. Do I need to duck? :)

MacDailyNews is one of my favorite comedy sites on the entire net. It's hard to believe there are people that fanatical in this world but MDN has a high percentage of them.

I also like when the posters refer to the "staff at MDN" or there are opinion pieces by "our own Steve Jack" :)

Here, here! Just thinking about an iphone with a micro sd slot makes me foam at the mouth.

Fortunately it isn't going to happen ....

That isn't an idiotic strategy. In all honesty, it was the color that caught me. I'd never owned an iPhone and wasn't even pondering it. Until I saw a blue 5c. It's so untraditional for Apple. So much so that it caught my attention. The 5c may not appeal to everyone but I think it's reaching the intended demographic.

Well sorry to inform you but you bought a year old phone with a new colour case, you could have bought a second hand ipHone 5 and put it in a colour case :) it's simply ripping people off with year old tech , it's new because it has a plastic coloured case, big deal..jeez Apple deserve to have lost so much to Android..

If they had launched a large screen iPhone option 2/3 years back they wouldn't have lost so much market share..simple as that..

They need a phone with more storage, as they have been in the iOS ecosystem just long enough to have invested money in apps etc they buy another iPhone. This time they get the 32GB model (even higher profit margin for Apple) so they don't run out of space ever again.

Apple sells 2 iPhones rather than just 1 iPhone. This is a brilliant move on Apple's part.

I think it would be 50/50. I know I would be pissed off having just bought a 8GB iPhone 5c for 3/4 of $1000, to find it full (out of space) within a short period. It would make me look at other brands with maybe upgradeable memory sizes.

The only thing(s) that would keep me loyal to one ecosystem would be a unique application that I cannot do without, and the competition doesn't have it, or bad experience with reliability. I'm so use to micro transactions these days that purchasing another platforms Apps doesn't hurt the pocket as much due to most being only $Free to $3.00

There's not much difference now between a high end Android phone and an iPhone. They all borrow technologies from each other, and there is usually an App equivalent on each device. Even Microsoft/Nokia covers the majority of mainstream Apps now.

Excuse my big rant if you were being sarcastic though :D

Introducing the all new iPhone 5w

I have a great idea for you Apple

Introduce an all new iPhone 5w (w=web) and price it at $0 subsidized

Keep the memory at 2GB, but don't write about it anywhere (like you don't write about amount of RAM, processor speed or battery capacity).
People don't like technical terms, so there's no need to make them confused.

It'll be enough memory to keep iOS installed and nothing more, spawning a new wave of HTML apps to keep data usage high.

Make secret agreements with carriers and charge them $3 per GB the costumer uses. The carriers will forward this cost directly to the costumer.

The end goal. Low production costs. Increased revenue from data streaming music from new iCloud music service and HTML apps data usage.

/sarcasm may appear above

People are really missing the boat on this because Apple has done such a fantastic job of convincing consumers that they never have "sales".

The iPhone 5C was released in October last year and by Thanksgiving it was already being sold for $100 off.

The 8GB iPhone 5C will replace the 8GB iPhone 4S when the iPhone 6 is released.

As I have mentioned in other posts, my employer issued me an iPhone 4 with 8GB of memory and it is currently running iOS 7.1 without issue. It is fine for its intended purpose, but I would not want it as a personal smartphone.

It's 2014 and Apple is still making 8gb phones, this must be a joke.

Seriously, what do they expect us to do with that? Download 10 songs, along with 5 apps, and maybe take 20 photos in the camera roll?? And that's it!!

I paid £709 for the 64GB iPhone 5s. Then got a sim only one month rolling contract with 3 for £18/mth which gives me unlimited calls, texts and data (including tethering). That equates to £1141 over 2 years. The equivalent 24 month contract with 3 today would cost £29 for the 5s plus £54/mth which comes to a total of £1325 over the 2 years. So I'm saving £184.

But that's not why I did it. Mobile providers are bringing out new plans all the time and I like the flexibility to switch as and when if I want according to who is giving the best deal, the best service, the best coverage where I live, etc. For example I was using Orange because they had 4G first. But now I've switched to 3 because they also have 4G now but it's much cheaper and you get unlimited data.

However I suspect that most people don't have the £700 to put down upfront so for them paying for it over a 2 year contract is a better option. I've no objection to contracts, I just think that 2 years is a long time to tie yourself down in a rapidly changing market. For example, in July roaming charges are being abolished inside the EU. So what a call costs you to make in the UK will cost the same if you make that call from say France or Germany. I wonder how many people are tied into expensive contracts with free calls abroad.

Totally agree. Also I like upgrading my iPhone every 12 months, it feels like just about the right time and yes I enjoy every "S" model immensely! :D

I'm absolutely with you.
I've always bought my iPhones unsubsidized, full price. I don't like to be tied with a carrier for 24/30 months.
It's not easy to pay 750€ every year, I know it, but the reselling value of my previous iPhone usually is good so I can afford that.
