I wouldn't call it weak, sure its not as fast as your i7, but its still pretty quick for what most people want to do with it, me included.

It also extends the life of the machine and makes it easier to sell.

I'ved looked quite extensively into it for my macbook, I'm sure that 4GB is the limit, it's not just an OS limitation.

You can improve laptop performance so much with a hard drive (really SSD) install instead of ram.

Though I'll admit, 8GB does sound yummy.

So rumor is that in my macbook running 10.6.6 with a 2.16 ghz processor I should be able to recognize and utilize 8gb of ram?

Otherwise I should only be able to utilize about 3.xx so if I buy 2x2gb sticks and I am able to recognize all 4gb of RAM then I should try to up it to 8gb of RAM to be a test dummy?

Okay, going to amazon now to look for some cheap RAM :)

I believe it only applies to 5.1 unibody macbooks.

It LIVES!

Just upgraded my unibody macbook (macbook5,1) 2.0ghz to 8GB
I have also noted a slight increase in boot time (appears to be an extra ~10 seconds before the apple logo appears during bootup)

Otherwise everything is running nicely, even on a 32bit kernel!

RAM speeds up boot-up time?:confused:

I have 4 GB in the same model you have, been kicking myself ever since missing out on the $65 Crucial 8 GB ram deal a while back.

Slows it down, by about 10 seconds. Once booted however, everything is fine.
I payed AUD$118 for the upgrade (from 4GB of Kingston ram that was duly installed the day after I got the machine)

With 2 VMs I use regularly and my insatiable amount of FF tabs, This upgrade has given the machine a new lease on life - I was considering buying a new 15" MBP -not anymore :D

edit: I previously had an 8GB Pagefile with ~4-5GB usage, I now have a 64MB pagefile with 0KB usage and 2.6GB Free (not including inactive) memory. I'm stoked.

8gb works for me!

Just like to chime in and say that I installed 8gb of ram on my late 2008 unibody Macbook 5,1 2.53 ghz about a month ago and it's been running great since. Not a single kernel panic.

I often have a VM (2gb assigned) and 3-4 Adobe CS apps in addition to other apps running at one time without a problem.

This is the ram: http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CT2KIT51264BC1067

The first sticks I had from them were dodgy so I sent them back and they were replaced with good ones.

Now, just going to wait for Lion and it's TRIM support before I upgrade to an SSD. Voila, a relatively cheap macbook upgrade.

I've attached my memory tests and other screens.

Hope this helps

J
