The first gen Pencil only still exists because the 9th gen iPad still exists to be the lowest priced iPad. The Pencil 1 doesn’t work with any of the other iPads. Once Apple stops selling that 9th gen model, its pencil will go too.

Apple has a legacy iPad line with Lightning and a current line with USC-C.
That USB-C iPad line has a low end and a high end pencil.
It’s not a confusing when you split it out like that.

But Apple offers USB to Lightning Adapter for only $29.00! They didn’t even go for that extra 99 cents!

Your logic makes sense but it’s still an unfortunate situation. I feel like if they wanted they could have fully replaced the first gen pencil with this. This feels like a Watch Series 3 kind of situation. If you squint just right it kinda sorta makes sense but it’s clearly a dead-end past its prime.

A little different because of some compatibility issues as you say but still not something I’d advise anyone to buy brand new today.

But if you DON'T need pressure, the Chinese knockoffs are actually better value, because they're not only cheaper, but also as responsive and hold the charger for longer, and a single charge lasts more. Hence the poor value of this pencil.

It sounds like you have personal experience with Apple's new $79 Pencil with respect to responsiveness and battery life. Can you speak to that in greater detail regarding the new Pencil?

Regarding cheaper... Yes all Apple's products are more expensive. Everybody knows that, but in the end still choose to purchase Apple products, for many reasons, thus making Apple one of the most successful tech companies in the world with 1+ Billion active customers.

And Apple would the charge the same $99 price. The point of the new Pencil is that it's targeted to people who don't need pressure sensitivity, at a much lower price.

Want more features in a phone, computer, tablet, Pencil, car, house, lawnmower, television, etc? No problem. Simply pay for them.

That's the way the world works. Pay more, get more. Pay less, get less.

Easy.

They can’t replace the first gen pencil with this (yet) because there are still iPads available which only support the first gen pencil. The lineup isn’t “confusing” to me - the first gen pencil is about to disappear when the iPads which require it also disappear from active support. I can definitely understand the complaints about it losing a valuable feature from the first gen one, though

Pressure sensitivity being worth $20 is a business decision. I am aware of the economic principle of having a product at every price point. I question whether it is actually worth it for either Apple or the the consumer in this scenario.

I do have personal experience with the 2nd gen Apple Pencil. The new Apple Pencil is a gimped version of it -- which is to be expected. However, none of that is relevant to the fact at that price point, the knockoffs do it better. Apple would have to either compete at that price point or do something different (e.g, better battery life than the knockoffs).

Of course this is a circular fallacy. just because a company is big, it doesn't mean it is better. By that logic, Microsoft could never make poor design choices with Windows because it has most of the market share -- and we should all be using Windows because Microsoft is so successful.

See my point?

Nope. Using your logic you'd likely say an Apple MBA is a gimped version of an Apple MBP. Simply because it has less features, at a much lower price.

Apple's massive success and 1 Billion active customers speaks volumes.

My question is... why does Apple releasing a lower priced with less features Pencil get you so worked up?

It's just a stylus.

Life goes on. Apple ins't doomed.

Simply purchase a Chinese knockoff stylus and find happiness. I suspect you really have no need for a stylus, but you're feeling obligated, for some reason, to lookout for Apple customers on their behalf.

They don't need your help; nor does Apple.

Design-wise for charging, this is as ridiculous as the magic mouse!
Have you seen the Pencil 1 where the pencil sticks directly into the lightning port on the iPad 9th gen? This is basically the USB-C replacement so it can work with the basic iPad 10th gen. It can’t use the Pencil 2 with the magnetic charging so they need something like this. You can just use a short USB-C cable to charge the pencil with the iPad.

And it is. It's just that its performance is still acceptable for most people, and it is still a good product overall. Contrary to this new Apple Pencil.

Big companies still make many mistakes, and that is irrelevant to the point this product doesn't make sense.

Erm... it doesn't? I just took a small time to reply here.

I think you purposely missed the part where I said I have an Apple Pencil 2.

I'm not "looking out" for Apple customers on their behalf; this is a forum for discussions and we're here discussing the uselessness of the new Apple Pencil.

They don't need your help; nor does Apple.

So you speak in behalf of Apple? Because they haven't personally told me they don't need my help. But you somehow have decided they don't.

It seems you're not still not getting that lower priced Apple (or any other company's) products do not have as many features as their similar products with more features at a higher price. Pay more, get more. Pay less, get less. It's not that difficult of a concept to grasp.

Big companies still make many mistakes, and that is irrelevant to the point this product doesn't make sense.

Of course companies make mistakes - there's rarely 100% perfection 100% of the time in any endeavor involving humans.

But having 1+ Billion active Apple customers (many repeat) indicates on the whole (or average) Apple's doing an outstanding job giving customers what they want, at the prices Apple charges and features offered.

You realize that it isn't just me that is saying that Apple's lineup is confusing, right? Or that the latest offerings have been underwhelming? Or that people have been appalled with the new Apple Pencil?

Yes...I'm sure there's a few more unhappy/outraged people out of the 1 Billion active and repeat Apple customers that have propelled Apple to becoming one of the most successful companies in the world. That's expected.

Regarding everyone else (the overwhelming majority of people who like the idea of a new Apple Pencil at a lower cost, or people who don't care, or have no opinion)... their view is probably something like:

"Why in the world would I get so annoyed and triggered by Apple introducing another Pencil giving people a stylus who don't need pressure sensitivity, and are happy and pleased that it's being offered at a 20% discount. Sounds like a good idea to me!"

Or... they just don't care because in the grand scheme of it's a mice-nuts story. Life goes on, the are much more important things to worry and get upset about.

1. Unnecessary
2. Confusing
3. Vista edition of the Apple Pencil
4. Whats the point really? No pun
5. Really, another one?
6. Its a pencil for G** sakes!
7. If this what you call innovation, I'm concerned.
8. Back to the drawing board please.
Agreed. In retrospect, it should just be a version of the Apple Pencil 2 that charges with USB-C. That is the Apple Pencil 2 minus wireless charging, plus USB-C charging. There's no need to take away pressure sensitivity.

Without pressure sensitivity, one might be better served by 3rd party alternatives to Apple Pencil. Like the Pencil-alternatives offered by Goojodoq.

I think at this point pressure sensitivity is a standard on pens that cost $50 or more... You know... Unless your Apple....

For whatever reasons, Apple decided that removing pressure sensitivity from this one low end pencil so that they could reduce the price. this model is clearly there to give the low end iPad 10th gen a pencil that is compatible instead of having to use the old Pencil 1 with a lightning to USBC dongle. Those with iPad Air and Pro have the option for the Pencil 2 and can largely ignore this one.

Yes, it might have been nice to include pressure sensitivity but that is really only useful if you are using it for drawing. There are a lot of uses where pressure sensitivity is irrelevant and where a lower price might be more important.

For those of you who need pressure sensitivity, just walk away. This is not the pencil you are looking for.

Then why leave tilt sensitivity? Tilt sensitivity has a much less usage case than pressure. Plus making this pen, as CITYSNAPS has kept trying to push, just for business users who don't want pressure sensitivity does not make sense. I guarantee it's much more cost effective to disable pressure a system wide software option than you know... Developing a whole new product with R&D, manufacturing costs, distribution costs etc.

Really my guess is this was a middle finger to the EU regalatory commission on having to adapt everything usb c. Just like the wattage on the USB C iPhones....

I cant wait to read all the TIM COOK IS EVIL comments if the Pencil had pressure sensitivity but Apple disabled it in software to force people to buy the more expensive pencils.
