That kind of market domination is seriously not good. I'm not saying Apple should be broken up, but I think we need 3 big players in the smart phone market, at the moment we have 2 eco systems (Android and Ios) and Apple + Samsung when hardware is concerned. I think some chinese companies will challenge with cheap and powerful hardware, but I really wish Windows Phone hadn't failed so miserably.

And now you understand why this is a flagship feature.

Probably an american thing. I have no one to iMessage with cuz literally everyone insists on using WhatsApp. Sometimes I write them on iMessage on purpose but it’s just not working.

Definitely an American thing.

iMessage is primitive compared to other messaging apps like WeChat which allow you to pay friends directly, split a restaurant bill, or request car sharing.

What a coincidence! When it came time for me to buy a new watch, it was down to the Apple Watch or a Rolex, too! When the Rolex saleman said I couldn’t get iMessages, that sealed the deal for the AW.

Just curious if they could check if these same teens are at all interested in buying a new Mac. I’m guessing no, and it probably explains Apple’s iOS-heavy trajectory.

Apple should launch their own version of facebook. One that doesnt data mine or run ads. With such a large and growing user base, it seems like a no brainer to me. Tim Cook spoke Friday about how their customers aren’t their product and how he wouldn’t be in a situation like Zuckerberg finds himself in, so why not launch your own social media app and capatilize on FaceBooks troubles?

That would seem like a good idea but with Cook's horrific political leanings I could see it quickly becoming a haven for censorship, indoctrination and even topping Facebook with the spread of fake news.

I've got an 11 year old niece. She definitely wants an iPhone. Her little group of friends currently use iPads and iPod touches to message each other.

I'm constantly shocked at the number of kids at restaurants that I see having iPads, iPhones, etc... With iPhone and the App Store, I think I saw one time that this was mostly iOS.

I thought the only way these existed was because they were funded by the sale of personal information - MySpace, Google+, Facebook. The only way a company can justify the servers and maintenance cost of such a project was the $ revenue gained. Seems like this would just be a huge money sink for Apple.

Why leave out seniors? They love their iPhones just as much. Is it because they're not considered cool enough for marketing?

I am able to pay friends directly, split a restaurant bill (also by paying friends directly) and get a ride from Uber though I've never tried to request car sharing.

My brother bought a 128GB USB drive from me recently and we were trying to figure out how he would pay me because we never deal with cash anymore. Was surprised how easy it was to use Apple Pay Cash to send $. 2 hours later it was deposited in my bank. Pretty cool.

There used to be plenty of big players in the market.

Symbian, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Palm...

Then came the newcomers: Android and iOS.

Those other guys tried to refresh/remake/rebrand themselves... but they were no match for the newcomers.

Ultimately... the market decided. That's how it's supposed to work, right?

Interesting demographics. I've also seen surveys that put affluent individuals overwhelming in the Apple camp as well. Given the dominance that Android has I wonder if we're left to conclude that Android users are older and less economically stable.

It shows how primitive the Apple Pay Cash system is. WeChat allows someone to initiate a bill splitting request and lets everyone track who's paid and who hasn't. Everyone from restaurants to gas stations take WeChat Pay. Similarly, car sharing is integrated directly into WeChat.

Interesting to read this perspective. In the U.S., it's new and cool to use a cashless transaction. In China, it would be abnormal to pay using cash, even for mom & pop street vendors.

Was this survey taken in Saudi Arabia at the Lamborghini dealership.

  1. They are dying off
  2. They don't upgrade that often
  3. They don't buy many small consumer goods.

I love the idea, but what is in it for Apple?

Those green bubbles, and can’t be part of a group message is what makes everyone without an iPhone feel like an outsider. It’s brilliant and Apple doesn’t have to spend a dime to advertise that.

I'm a green bubble and part of a group message of apple-phoners. I don't know what you are talking about.

I think I was born right on the dividing line. I noticed in high school and college that way more of my 1-year-older friends had Android phones than my 1-year-younger friends. Similarly with Mac and Windows.

Not surprising really and definitely a smart area to focus on for Apple. iPhone's are the most used in my circle of friends and workplace as well (25-35).

It’s definitely an American thing. I know from my relatives in Europe who own an iPhone, iMessage is an option with some, but not really preferred. FB Messenger (with older relatives) and WhatsApp (with the younger crowd) is what’s IN there. The green/blue bubble thing is mainly a thing among teens and teen wannabes in the US.

Yep, American kids have the most advanced minds that advertisers can buy. That does not sound right, but you know what I mean.

Actually though, the green bubbles suck. Group chats are always a ****show when there are Android users in them due to the more primitive standard and some stupid phones that don't even do SMS group chats correctly. And you know the person with green bubbles isn't getting messages on his computer.
