This whole story baffles me. I mean, I know she's 83 years old and I know how fragile the human body is at that age, but c'mon, $75k for a nose repair and asking for up to $1mil for the lawsuit?

Article doesn't state anywhere that something else broke, which at most would have probably been a broken hip, at most, if she fell. That price sounds about right for a hip replacement, which I have heard rough estimates of $50k for everything from the surgery, hospital stay, therapy to whatever else you need. She would have had to pay a large majority of that out of pocket to even count towards a lawsuit.

More than likely this is her next of kin asking for the lawsuit and she's going along with it so they don't have to pay her bills, if she did pay this out of pocket, they'll be paying for it long after she's gone.

Wow.

I don't care about glass doors, frivolous lawsuits, nose jobs or who wins a million dollars in court, what I do care about is that the level of abuse and vitriol levelled in this thread is truly disgusting.

There are many problems with the US, and an overabundance of litigation is certainly one of them, but the complete lack of empathy and respect for human dignity displayed in this thread is a much bigger one.

I'm disgusted.

I wonder if she was going to buy an iPad ? That perceived depth on the icons could be dangerous.

Next time I go to the Apple store, I will hit myself to the window then sue. Easy money.

I think most people would feel sorry for an old lady that hurt herself. That sympathy vanishes rather quickly when she gets up and demands a million dollars+ for making a mistake.

I honestly don't think there is any problem with people finding this whole thing rather ridiculous, and making fun of both the lady and the system - the lady for trying to exploit the system and the system for being rather silly if this kind of abuse is actually possible (which it may not be, she may get nowhere in court).

well who cares if that grandma wins... besides Apple has got loads of cash

people in glass houses

Holy depth-perception, Batman! Imagine if she'd managed to get inside an Apple store with a downward-spiral glass staircase... :p

Couldn't have said it better

Being from outside America I find this story to be quite unbelievable. The US legal system just seems to one big joke.

The fact that anyone could sue and find a lawyer that would take on a case to sue $75000+1m for walking into a glass door incredible.

I would get laughed at if I tried to do this in the UK. I'm not sure any lawyer would take my case and I'm sure it would be thrown out of the courts instantly.

I'm sad to say that I agree. Didn't expect that Apple fanatism could be such a bad thing :-(

You forgot to put '\sarcasm' at the end of your post.

That picture is actually a good example of how someone can accidentally hit the door.

For instance, you and a friend are walking along the side of the Apple Store. Because of the new retina display on your iPad, you kept on talking on and on about how wonderful it is without looking where you're heading. Next thing you know… SMACK! Oops, there's goes your brand new iPad, and your friend got a good laugh! :D

Trust me, I've had my fair share of bumping onto things because I wasn't looking. One time, I collided with another person because we were both texting… HAHAHA! :p

Honestly, all the Apple Stores I've seen have their doors open inward; your picture is the first I've seen with doors open outward. Anyhow, the lawsuit is ridiculous because people are not watching where they're going.

The article said she hit the glass door. So... was she planning on going into the Apple Store?

And... has she never been to this particular Apple store before?

Many Apple Stores have walls and doors made of glass (and other businesses do too!!!)

The expectation is that there will be some kind of door you have to open to enter the business. But even if you can't see a door... shouldn't you be a little more careful just in case it's an invisible door made out of glass?

The fact that she hit the door is interesting...

The glass door is only 6 feet across... while the rest of the glass storefront is 60 feet of non-door.

If she noticed the entire storefront was glass... and she carefully aimed for the one part of the glass that is designated as doors... maybe she should have checked to see if the doors were open or not...

Looking at the picture below... you can see that Apple puts things behind the non-door parts of the glass walls.

The only part they don't put anything is the doors themselves. I guess those big chrome handles aren't big enough to say "hey, these are doors!"

This is incredibly stupid, even an octegarian should know that a retail store isn't going to be missing a front wall, even if it is made of glass there's a reasonable expectation that there will be some kind of barrier to entry there. Apple stores close at some point and they can't very well keep people out without a fourth wall.

Besides the displays which perhaps he thought you have to walk through to get inside, not very likely.

Darwin.

That is all

Hey, your post gave me an idea on how to solve the problem of the overpopulating of the world; let's randomly place death traps throughout the world and all the stupids will be killed off while the IQ-elite, such as yourself, will outsmart the traps and live on.
Does that sound like a good idea to you?
