I've read several cases where people have gotten responses to emails directed to Jobbs. Fact is, what other CEO/president would respond to user's emails? Whether his response is gentle as a baby's ass or colder than a witch's tit, at least we get responses.

Eh, I don't think he's one of a kind.

But more to the point, your giving witches a bad rap. Back in the 1500s I used to get with one on a regular basis.. her tits were actually quite nice.

What specifically is wrong with the Radeon 1900?
I find it hard to believe that the difference between this card and GeForce 8800 would be noticeable in Leopard.
Certainly not enough to justify trashing a perfectly functional graphics card.

The Mac Pro isn't just an OSX machine and in Windows the card becomes much more useful and in fact there is one hell of a difference. Not everyone only uses the machine for ONLY productivity.

In motion, where much of the heavy lifting is passed to the graphics card, it'll make a huge difference. I believe that aperture will show similar gains, although I've no experience with that program. The truth won't likely be clear until some benchmarks are run. Cinebench, in particular, should prove interesting.

What else is it good for besides gaming?
I guess you could use the Mac Pro for gaming, but this seems very self-limiting, since AFAIK the Mac Pro is not set up for SLI.

Depending upon the programming of the application and what specific technology it is designed for it can be 100% dependant up the video card, i.e. hardware rendering or vertex shaders, as is the case with 3D models or in the case of 2D models can function entired based on the main system processer, i.e. excel or scientific computation.

As stated above, you have production applications like Motion and Aperture that rely heavily on the video card. We also have a lot of A-List titles on the Mac; World of Warcraft and Unreal 3 are great examples.

Combine that with the fact that people want to be able to use the same video card to boot into Windows and you can see why we really have the need for a new card.

SLI is great and all, but it's still not common and I doubt it will ever truly take off. Notice how we're seeing CPUs with multiple cores? That will become commonplace on video cards very soon.

The X1900 is a buggy, hot, problematic card that needs to die in a fire.

All the messages sent to that email address are probably forwarded to media relations or whatever department they have like that.. and they probably answer.. that email address is just so people think and get excited about talking to him:apple::apple:

I got an email back from Santa too but I didn't post it all over the forums. Ofcourse if the tooth fairy replies, I might post that one!

I also posted this in the support forums on Apple.com:

Well, I have to say, that SOUNDS like The Steve.

  1. It last about 3-6 months before it melts
  2. It draws too much power, causing #1
  3. It's kinda a crap card, certainly compared to the 8800
  4. It's massively overpriced at US$400

I bet there's more....

I've had an ATI 1900 for 14 months. No problems here, and I do use it for Gaming in Vista as well. I do blow the dust out of it every month as the air intake gets clogged easily (poor design, no doubt). But it's easy enough to do and takes ten seconds. I don't mean to contradict all the people that HAVE had problems, just to note that some others haven't.

That's not to say I don't want an 8800, I do, and probably will get one if they fix the problem, but to be honest, I really don't need one a my present set up is working fine.

The 1900XT was considered by many to be one of the finest of it's generation and is still a very capable card. It's just showing its age and is in desperate need of an update. The fact that Mac OS utilizes the graphics card for processing in professional desktop applications via the Core frameworks just makes this all the more important.

Wow, That is a pretty strong email. I don't doubt you sent it or received a reply for one minute. Good on you.

We can all sit back and just let things happen or we can make a stand in order to try and get things moving.

Ive just ordered a 3.2 with an 8800. Woe is me. Im not just waiting for a graphics card - I have to wait for a whole damn machine.

If your email has in any small way made Stevie J pick up the phone and prod his techies to work a bit faster then I for one thank you.;)

It has a tonne of thermal paste under the heat sink so it runs hot and melts. Clean that out and put in a thin layer of Arctic Silver (or something similar) and it'll be much cooler. Mine never caused me any problems. There are also quieter heat sinks for it (TMG AT1).

But truth be told it is belching out a lot of heat (130 W). But 8800GT isn't much better in that respect (110 W).

I want to see Steve Jobs be an Apple Genius for a day.

Because the line "I suggest you calm down" in response to an irate pro customer is absolutely hilarious.

If that was indeed his response, I actually quite liked it very much, especially after reading the letter that was sent to him. He says it plain and simple without sounding like a corporate drone, which oddly enough people seem to prefer over real answers.

Wow dude, you told him how to run his company. You go girl! Seriously. You people really need to find better things to do with your time. It'll be fixed when it's fixed. Get a grip. It's a fracking computer! He was far more polite than I would have been. I would have sent an assistant to your house to throw a bucket of ice water in your face.

It's also as much as several months pay.

If no one is prepared to raise a fuss, heck even get hysterical, s**t won't get done. Not to say hysterics are necessary, but it is a valid complaint.

If a $3000 computer is several months pay, you shouldn't be buying a $3000 computer.
