8bit guy Quad G5 discussion

You are thinking about him like he's some sort of mastermind working at Apple whose job is to make products look obsolete.

Thanks, if that were true I'd have an IQ closer to my shoe size...

No, what I mean is, he has a great channel, does entertaining and informative videos and surely, prior to doing this one he'd do some minimal research first - then he'd know that everything about that particular Quad was way off the mark.

It's disinformation pure and simple - luckily, there's plenty of videos out there of people doing amazing things with their G5 Quads.

I like this guys channel, and despite being a G5 fanboy, I agree with most things he says here and the general point of this video. Even with OmniWeb or TFF on my Quad, youtube will occasionally drop frames at 720 and 420, and they are massive power hogs by today's standards.

One thing to point out though is that the noise he complains of is the result of a faulty PCI or HD fan - either from grime or other problems. If you have a G5 and listen to your fans closely, you'll notice that these two fans have a lower pitch than the CPU fans, and they can be heard clearly in this video. My Quad isn't quiet by today's standards, but it definitely doesn't sound like an xserve.

I really like his "Is it obsolete?" Series, but his assessment of the PM G5 ran contrary to what some friends of mine who have that machine have said about it. I've never owned one, so I can't speak from personal experience, but 8 bit guy definitely didn't like the G5.

I keep getting told I'm bullsh|tt|ng because my G5 doesn't struggle to play 480p YouTube. It's actually really god damn annoying when on my G5 I can have a 720p or 480p YT video on one monitor, and two tabs open on another monitor and it performs nearly as well as my MacBook and I'm told "lmao impossible" like b/tch how am I doing it then

I've just posted a video response in the comments (and put it on here too) - I'm just waiting now for some Tuber to accuse me of faking it :)

How are we supposed to know if it's running choppy or not if our systems are unable to play Youtube videos smoothly :D J/K

I think it's obvious to anyone who has worked with a PowerMac G5 that there is something wrong with the system he was using. The fan noise indicates as much. I also feel anyone who hasn't used a PowerMac G5 and knows Apple would also reach the same conclusion. That's too much noise for an Apple product that is doing nothing but sitting there idle.

When I performed my transcoding tests on both the dual 2.0GHz and dual 2.7GHz systems never did the fans make any appreciable noise. In fact I doubt any normally functioning G5, unless loaded to the hilt with power hungry, heat generating components installed, would ever spin the fans to full speed...even under extended load (well, maybe if the surrounding temperature were really high).

I viewed the Batman vs. Superman Youtube trailer you used in your video on my dual 2.7GHz and it stumbled a little with 720p...watchable but it was noticeable. 430 seemed to play fine. Both were viewed in Safari as the option to choose anything higher than 360 was not available in TFF.

I'm sitting here in my office at the moment with a Quad idling behind me, although I have been using it today. In normal use, the loudest noise it makes is the hard drive seeking...if it were as loud as the one in the video I'm sure I wouldn't be able to hear the relatively new and fairly quiet hard drive at all.

In fact, I can't hear the G5 at all over the drone of the SGI Octane sitting next to it, which isn't particularly loud at idle either.

By the way, this computer is actually still in somewhat active use. Although I'm the only one who physically touches, there are a few other SGI workstations around the department used for offline NMR data processing and protein modeling that rely on this computer to be operating. It was down for most of last summer(due to relocation and finally finding a permanent home in my office, not for any problems), but aside from that it's had very little downtime since new.

They were great systems for their time. Too bad SGI stopped making them.

BTW, are you familiar with the "hinv" command?

Well, what do you do when people point out the machine is malfunctioning? Deny it!
Wow.. I got a lot of hate mail about the last episode on the PowerMac G5. I just wanted to take a moment to address some of the misconceptions about the video. Some of it was maybe my fault for not explaining better, the rest, I don't know.

1) Many people thought there was something wrong with the machine due to the fact that the fans were so loud "all of the time." However, this was not the case. The fans were quiet when the machine was idle or not doing CPU intensive activities. Although, even at idle, they were louder than any other computer in my house but that's because I have exceptionally quiet computers. I used to have an iMac G5 and it was the same way. It was decently quiet until I started doing work on it, then the fan would come on and it was really loud. That's actually why I got rid of the machine. But maybe I could have been more specific in the video that the fans were not running full speed "all of the time."

2) Many people criticized me for not getting Linux to work. In fact, a surprising number of people told me I was an idiot because I didn't realize I was supposed to use a PowerPC specific version of Linux. So, they assumed I was running X86 Linux on it. of course, I'm not that dumb. But at the same time, they must be pretty dumb to not realize it would be impossible to get 75% of the way through an install if I was using a disc with the wrong CPU architecture. It would have never even booted, for God's sake. Just for the record, I tried MintPPC, Debian, and Ubuntu. All with similar result . In fact the MintPPC version I tried was specifically compiled for the G5. And it isn't like I'm a stranger to Linux. I have it installed on several of my G4 systems.

3) Many people said the Mac Mini couldn't possibly be faster. First off, the actual wording was "the Mac Mini that was relased a year after this computer was discontinued." This machine was discontinued mid 2006, and the Mac Mini in question was introduced mid 2007, which has a 2.0 Ghz Core-2-Duo. And while geekbench still technically gives the Quad G5 a slight edge, in actual practice the Mac Mini screams by comparison. It can play 1080p video using the same VLC player without even breaking a sweat. It can play youtube in 1080p without breaking a sweat, etc. So it was a valid statement.

4) Apparently there is no such thing as a Ford F250 dually. It would have to be an F350. Ok, so that was the only factual mistake I made in the video. But to be fair, I have a list of 20 people now that I send my pre-release videos to so they can check for mistakes. 1 factual mistake was found in this video, and it was fixed before the final release of the video. Yet, nobody caught the F250 Dually mistake.

This is actually one of the reasons I never really wanted to make this video. I knew that I didn't care for the machine very much and wouldn't have a lot of nice things to say about it. Yet at the same time, I knew there were a lot of people out there that loved it. So I knew it was going to stir some people up if I did a video on it. But people kept asking for it. I tried to be as objective as I could.

Also, one final note. I already gave the machine back to Curtis, so it is no longer in my possession. I was only borrowing it, after all. So I will not be able to do any further tests.

This Facebook kind of peeved me off. David claims the machine was not malfunctioning because "the fans weren't loud when the machine wasn't doing anything CPU intensive.". But it's still too loud when it does! That's what we pointed out! Also, I went through quite a few comments, and couldn't find real "hate-mail". Unless people actually sent him hate over private messages, this is false. Or, he takes our comments WAY out of proportion about the PowerMac, taking it personal. Either way, it's kind of stupid to say it didn't malfunction when he earlier admitted to not knowing too much about these machines. And we gave sufficient proof, I commented about it on both his Facebook and YouTube, not obnoxiously much but at least noticeably much. Yet he ignored all this and claims "It must be hatemail!".

I am not-unfortunately I don't know Irix as well as I do OS X even though both are BSD Unix.

I actually have three SGIs in my office. One is an O2 that I can't get any action out of whatsoever other than it(seemingly) powering on.

The other is an Iris Indigo that I haven't done anything with yet. I does have VGA and 13W3 on the video card, so display isn't a problem. I actually got the computer "in trade" for a G5 Quad(both sort of hypothetical since both were/are asset tagged university property and the SGI shows up on our annual 10K inventory). It doesn't have any HDDs-which I can fix-but I also haven't been able to find a mouse for it. I do at least have the keyboard. The guy who "gave" it to me does at least have the OS install tapes, so if I ever get anything together I should hopefully be able to put a tape drive on it and have it going.

BTW, it is the earlier one with the 3000 processor and the lower end graphics card. I did have a lot of fun reading all the text on the boards, including the "Bill and Ted's(and Keith's) Excellent Machine" followed by the names of the folks who worked on the project and "The Song and Dance Machine" on the graphics card. I miss computer companies having a sense of humor.

I just read through his Facebook post plus all the following comments consoling him for his savage battering at the hands of G5 fan boys....
Unbelievable. Not surprisingly, any rational suggestion of the Quad's true performance, along with actual video evidence, has been completely ignored.
Still - all his subscribers are experts on G5s now and know full well that the Quad from day one was "an over engineered piece of s**t"

This annoyed me too. It makes people hesitant to call him out on it, because now there's a large group of misled fools ready to attack you if you do, because you're a "hater". Really disappointing, coming from a channel that has been keeping out of any kind of drama successfully for so long.

Just sad that someone who is reasonably informed on Macs is peddling such inaccurate information. Hopefully, anyone looking at getting a bargain priced Quad will find all the other videos on YouTube and be assured it's fit for purpose.

To be honest, he always tends to make small mistakes in his videos, but none as gross as this one. He also said he is now showing his videos to a select few people, so they can catch any mistakes he makes before publishing the final video. I bloody hope someone knowledgeable on Macs is on that board, so they can send David back to the drawing board with such videos!

If you're too thin skinned to take some criticism, then don't go posting videos online especially "informative" videos that are supposed to be packed with facts when you truly don't know what you're talking about. The bad comments will always come with the good. There was no need for him to throw a big hissy fit about how he "didn't even want to do the video" once he realized his review was flawed. He's got the subscribers, he's getting $$, and thats really all that matters.

I've just posted a video response in the comments (and put it on here too) - I'm just waiting now for some Tuber to accuse me of faking it :)

Fake.

No but seriously, when my iMac went down a couple weeks ago, I used iMovie 09 on my G4 1.67 with 1 GB RAM to edit and upload YouTube videos. Keep in mind I have my FCP intro's made for a month or so before I ever film a video so I could easily copy one over and use it in iMovie. The PowerBook is still the best laptop I own. If my adapter ever comes so I can put in a 160 gig SATA I have laying around and dual boot Linux, (I have my reasons) then this laptop could EASILY become my daily driver.

Exactly. There's still a lot of mileage on these machines if you are realistic about their limitations.

Seems the YouTube community is far too fragile to be given any helpful advice from experienced Mac users though...hell, even one forum member here felt the need to resort to insults (before being swiftly suspended by the mods) to defend 8BitGuy's reluctance to do a bit of research.

RE Linux, try Lubuntu 16.04 - I haven't done a full install but the live disk has been great on my 12" PB and Quad.

I've been testing Ubuntu MATE 16.10 Alpha preview. I was shocked when I was able to play a YouTube video in 480 with no hacks. I was even more shocked that I successfully used Office Live (Office 2016 online) with no hiccups. I want to keep OS X because of the amazing programs like Office 08, iMovie 09, TextWrangler and the like. But I will so use Linux (Especially since MATE comes with a dual boot screen) for everything else. I really don't see what a newer laptop could do better besides speed and video quality. Well that, and Netflix. BTW, anyway to get Spotify Web Player working in Linux?

Which is why I'm trying to find an HTML compatible version. If memory serves, Midori on Linux has built in flash and I've used it before. Idk I just wanted Spotify. It's more of a first world problem than anything else.

I too took a video of watching HIS video in 720p on a Quad with no slowdown, stuttering, and the cores at about 25% load. The one I was using has he same(somewhat rare) video card as his-the X1900.

I know that @Dronecatcher and I have discussed the effect of video cards. I actually have an FX4500 sitting unopened in a shipping box that I need to try out, although the 1900 does better in Openmark.

In any case, using the software of the time and a fair bit of newer stuff my Quad, it keeps trudging.

My Quicksilver remains my main computer, and it can do 360p on Youtube if I give it time to buffer.
