I just posted this on Apple's feedback site (http://www.apple.com/iphone/share/)... wanted to share it with you... please feel free to do so. BUT... to help the cause, please make an intelligent arguement, dont just complain. Tell them your complaint, then let them know how they can make you happy and win your support again. Here is what I said:

The news of Apple dropping the iPhone 8GB to $399 a mere TWO MONTHS after release is EXTREMELY upsetting. I was an early adopter, does this mean I deserve to take a $200 hit? I, along with MANY other LOYAL Apple fans and supporters, helped the company launch the product, and this is how we are repaid?? I will NOT be buying ANY Apple products anywhere near their release. Just imagine if all of your loyal supporters did this... watch how products flop and fail in less time than it took to lower the price of my iPhone $200. Thanks a lot Apple, and unless I receive a $200 gift card to your store, you can count me out of your loyal fanbase and financial supporters (my AAPL stock has already been off-loaded thanks to this little "event"), to include any future purchases above the ~$11,000 in Apple products I own and have purchased as gifts. Also, I can no longer, in good conscience, recommend a product to a person from a company that would do something like this. I am a trusted IT professional, and people listen to what I say when I recommend products. I cannot afford to lose that reputation I have with my clients. This needs to be fixed, and soon. I am not the only one, pay a little visit to www.macrumors.com and NUMEROUS other Apple fan & rumors sites. Do the right there here, REWARD your loyal fans, not penalize them. The result is more purchases and recommendations to friends and family to purchase Apple products - which, in turn, will reward your own bottom line. I await your response.

The iPhone (both models) was, at release, a MUCH better deal than anything else out there:
http://roughlydrafted.com/RD/RDM.Tech.Q3.07/28CE05EF-2E0F-4912-A62A-CBAB41E0D305.html

Now it is an even BETTER deal, which takes nothing away from the people who got the first good deal--and who still get the same cheap monthly plan, and will still be getting free feature updates.

I'd feel VERY frustrated at my bad luck if I decided not to wait. I totally understand those emotions. But you DID get a great device at a great price you willingly accepted, and Apple has not harmed you one bit by this change. Things (and NOT just from Apple) drop in price. Occasionally by a lot and at unexpected times. It's a risk. But it hurts nobody, and helps people who waited.

A $200 price drop is pretty shocking--a rare tactic indeed, and I'm guessing a smart one: very few will actually boycott Apple over this very welcome move.

Then again, the 8mm-thin Internet tablet for $299 (iPod Touch) is pretty surprising as well.

I now have increasing hopes for the 16-32 GB iPhone I've been waiting for!

This was a rather dumb move on Apple's part. Who is going to buy another expensive first-generation Apple product? Just wait a few months and they'll knock 33% off the price.

Their margins must be absurd on the iphone if they can drop the price $200 in a day, only two months after release.

If they ship the millionth ipod this month and pulled $350 per unit, then thats $350 million in 2 months, PLUS all the money they get from AT&T for signing up hundreds of thousands of new customers (which must be at least $100-200 a person, right?

So maybe around half a bil in 2 months...thats not chump change. Not even to Apple. They've long since recouped their R&D costs on this one. Unbelievable.

It would be pretty stupid of them to alienate the early adopters within this time frame. I think it'd be wise of them to offer a free exchange for an 8gb model for the 4gb purchasers and a 100 gift certificate/credit to the 8gb customers.

I've seen an early adoption premium...especially in this field...but not this substantial. Especially since Apple is known not to screw their resale values.

No they should not go wild giving everyone who adopted early credit or refunds. Everyone who bought one already got to use an iPhone for two months. Everyone saw this price drop coming at one point or another...

I bought mine 5 days ago. And now it is 200$ cheaper.

This price drop is very tempting, but I am still going to wait for the second generation. I just returned home from spending two weeks in Japan and their phones still blow away anything we have here: live TV broadcasting, Two way video conferencing and of course all of the imode features. Granted the internet connection is kind of slow, but you don't drop your calls when you go down into the subway system. Now if AT&T can just live up to their name of least dropped calls we'd have something really hot here.

As tempting as this is, I'll wait for the second generation.

In a situation like this I would normally be just as upset as the other 220+ people who posted negatively, because I too purchased 2 - 8GB iPhones at $599 a piece. However, I just bought a new 24" iMac and recieved free upgrades in approximately the amount Apple screwed me out of. I got a 24" iMac, 2.8 Core 2 Extreme, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, and a Wireless Mouse for $1854.00. The customer service rep. must have been in a good mood, or the store was down and he couldn't access prices!

I think pretty much everyone knew the price was going to drop at some point, it's inevitable. The shocking part was a $200 price drop in a little over two months. That's a really large drop for such a short amount of time. Now if they did the same thing 6 months from now, or dropped prices $100 for each I don't think there would be this big of an uproar.

i agree. if it was another three months, and the same price drop, still not a problem.

this soon after launch though and such a large drop is a bit much.

and i don't expect much in compensation. but say 20 free ringtones would be sweet. just the showing of appreciation would be nice.

Wow, nice one Steve. you just slapped the 1 million current iPhone customers in the face. Good job keep up the work! First you're screwing over the companies you're working with now you're screwing over your current loyal customers. I can see where Apple is going now.

I don't know about this. But I personally think it is a bad PR for Apple.
Or maybe they figure they can get 200 back from ATT.

So I actually called an Apple store and they Said to bring in my reciept and I would get a credit, even for the iPhone I purchased on day one!!!!

Hope this helps everyone.

Oh, something about the buying public tells me that this won't be a big issue....

This thread is seriously ridiculous. You're all acting like spoiled children.

I, like many of you, stood in line on 6/29 and bought an 8GB iPhone. I did that because I was prepared to pay $600 to buy it on launch day. I did, and I have been overall happy with my purchase (minus some minor bumps which Apple took care of admirably). Now the price has been dropped $200. Sure, that's $200, but I had already prepared myself to spend $600 on the iPhone. I did so, and have no regrets for doing so. I've thoroughly enjoyed having the phone for these first two months, and I forsee enjoying it well into the future.

If you weren't truly prepared to spend $600, and are now angry that other people will be able to get the same product for less, you really need to re-evaluate the criteria you use to make decisions about purchasing. You paid the price as advertised when you bought it. Now it's cheaper. You aren't owed anything. If you didn't want to spend as much as you did, you shouldn't have bought it at that price.

This is really not something I should have to explain to a board full of people who claim to be adults.

I am on hold w/ Apple right now waiting to "voice" my displeasure with this price drop screwing all of the loyal early adopters.

Umm...if you're pissed about $200 that you knowingly spent, how pissed are you gonna be about AAPL continuing to see strong growth?

I know you're upset, but why shoot yourself in the other foot too? Now instead of limping you can't walk at all..

LOTS of people... clearly... hahahah suckers!!!! :p

Not suckers, really. Never, in the years I have kept tabs on Apple's products, has Apple ever done this. Can any one else remember if Apple has ever dropped prices, so steep, on any of it's products so soon after introduction.

Usually, it's people getting irked because they just bought an iMac or iPod and due to Apple's secrecy, they never know when new models are being released until a week or so before actual product announcement and they just missed out.

you'll never win

the technology battle. Go buy a computer and see how much it drops in 4-6 months. People are just getting pissed because the iPhone was a "Hey look at me!" toy that a select few had. Now more people will be willing to buy. Not me, simply because of AT&T.

And on that note, does anyone else think that AT&T might have been involved in this little price break? It's guaranteed money for every contract = win/win for them.

I'm trying to find the logic here. At $600, YOU were perfectly willing to buy the iPhone. Now that Apple has lowered the price, you are now mad. Is it that you are no longer part of some elite club? You are letting the value of your toys define who you are? How are you being "hung out to dry". YOU BOUGHT THE PHONE!!!! I would turn the logic around. You kicked yourself in the balls, and you don't want to take the blame for it. Apple did not make you buy the stupid phone, YOU DID!

I think you're missing the point. A mere two months or so after the release and they drop the price by $200, that is a huge slap in the face to the individuals who bought the product, helping to make it a success. Instead of throwing insults at people for expressing their frustration, take a step back, breath, and try and understand their point of view. It might help.

I don't think it is that the margins are so high so much as Apple is making a profit on each iPhone IN ADDITION to profiting off of the subscriptions (whereas usually phone makers sell at a loss and make it back on the subscriptions).

Additionally, Apple has put a RIDICULOUS amount of money into R&D for multitouch; I expect they intend to use it in far more than just the iPhone. Could it be that the iPhone has made enough money to pay for the R&D costs and Apple can afford a smaller profit now?

I understand the frustration but I'm amazed that people are so angry about Apple making something cheaper. It's a good thing! You knew what you were paying when you bought the device, and you obviously thought it worth it.

I was unwilling to pay $600 for a phone. I might be able to get a refurb iPhone at a price I can afford now.
