Next month when Leopard comes out they're going to drop the price of the iMacs by $200. $999 20" iMac FTW!!!

Apple isn't dropping the price of the phone to piss you off. They're dropping the price of the phone because it's not selling (that's Apple's major problem and solution)

That simply isn't true. A report by iSuppli released in the last couple of days (look it up yourself) showed that the iPhone outsold EVERY SINGLE "smart" phone for the month of July. Further, the iPhone outsold Palm's entire lineup PUT TOGETHER.

Yes, they dropped the price to sell MORE iPhones, and to reach a broader market with a lower price. However, I think it was a mistake to drop it SO much SO fast, especially given that they're already selling very well.

I say this for two reasons: (1) I have one, so I'm a little pissed that they put a brand new product on clearance (1/3 off) two months after charging me full price for it, and more importantly (2) I have a significant stock investment in Apple, so I think they're giving it away too quickly. People would have been THRILLED at a $100 price drop, and it would have brought a lot of people off the fence. $200 is ridiculous. Sure, they'll sell far more of them at the lower price, but as a stockholder, I'm upset that they're giving away so much potential profit. I think they should have dropped it by $100 now, and by $100 more in 3-6 months.

But then again, I'm not running the company. :)

iPhone buyers (pre-today) I feel your pain.

However, lets consider what would happen if iPhone 8 gb remained at $599. I think it's sales would dry up because, while I might be willing to pay a premium (over the iPod Touch) for a phone/iPod, I would not be interested in a $300 premium. I have other options, like keeping my current phone which works just fine on a non-ATT carrier.

Think about it. While many bought the apple phone, NO ONE apparently (except S. Jobs) was excited about being forced to go to ATT to get the phone service. I think that the iPhone would probably have died since there would no longer be an incentive to get it when I can get all the nice iPod Touch goodies without the phone and keep my current carrier. The only phone feature worth getting on the iPhone was the visual voicemail. But that alone would not have been enough to make me switch.

Not happy

The iphone was my first apple purchase, got it on 6/29 and have loved it since. I was so impressed with the care of the apple employees that I purchased 2 macbooks and basically walked away from other MS products. This behavior is not somthing that I would have expected form them and really hope that they do somthing for the people that purchased before the major price drop.

I have to think that this push on the price drop is coming from ATT as well. This is somthing that they would do to their customers.

When you buy the bleeding edge, this happens. The egregious thing IMHO is that this obviously was the plan all along. They planned to sell 1,000,000 phones at an inflated price to recover all their R&D, THEN drop the price dramatically. This is a first in the business as I know it, especially in this time frame.

The real problem for Apple here is that almost 1/3rd of the people who bought the iPhone were FIRST TIME APPLE PURCHASERS. Apple just pissed those people off, forever. All signs point to a 16GB model and maybe a 32GB model in January, if those have 3G, GPS, etc. then you just pissed off EVERYONE who bought a phone and a 2 year contract. By the announcements today it is pretty clear that Apple is nothing more than Microsoft with a little more finesse. Too bad really.

ash =o)

I bought RAM 30 days ago and now it's half the price.
I bought a hard drive 2 months ago, and now it's a fraction of the price.

With all the whining on here, you'd think Apple should never change any prices or release new products so we could all always have the top of the line item.

Huge hype, big demand, big pricetag to be the first cool kid on the block to have one.

Now that the hype has died down they are re-generating more buzz with a dramatic price drop.

Seems like smart business to me. I bought one at 599, and I still love it.

Were we all happier when Apple was releasing nothing except barely speed bumped g4s???

Wow! Long live Europe! :)

Sometimes it's good to live in old good Europe ;-) We will get iPhone cheaper and already tested by rich betatesters from U.S. ;-)
Personally I would hold on a little bit with my purchase as I feel that the next price drop/iPhone capacity jump to 16 GB is also very close. Maybe even within 4/5 months.

Go Go Apple! :-D

this price drop makes the iPhone a much better deal than the iPod touch if the 2 years contract and AT&T is not an issue for you.
I am buying an Iphone TODAY!

The refurb store has them for $349, a $50 dollar drop as opposed to the $100 it was at.

Also, the 4GB is no longer in the refurb store, either.

I was hoping for a 4GB model at $249.

I am stunned - STUNNED - by some of the reactions that I'm seeing here. There's a price drop so...

  • you won't buy any more Apple products
  • you think that you should get money back
  • you're considering trying to file a law suite

That's just nuts! Sure, it might suck that you didn't wait for a price drop. It might really suck if you bought your phone recently, but, guess what? It happens ALL THE TIME! This has nothing to do with Apple or with the iPhone, it has to do with the market.

Sure, if you're not satisfied with the iPhone, then choose never to buy an Apple product again. But because there was a price drop? PLEASE!

And, as for getting money back, maybe you will. Everyone's jumping to the conclusion that the price drop is the end of the news. Does anyone remember with Aperture's price dropped from $499 to $299? Again, a $200 price drop. Again, due to market factors. And everyone who had bought Aperture was up in arms about it. And what happened? Very shortly thereafter people started getting notice that they were being given a $200 credit at the Apple Store. So, who knows, maybe Apple will do the same thing or something similar with the iPhones.

Oh, and about those people who have said that they were pissed because this means that Apple was making more than $200 on every iPhone, you don't know that. Cost is based on a lot of factors, not least of which being volume. Now, with the new iPod Touch, which I'm sure shares a lot of components with the iPhone, the sheer numbers may well have increased sufficiently for them to be able to drop the prices, simply from that.

Sheesh.

No sympathy here! NO ONE TOLD you to be the FIRST IN LINE!! NO ONE forced you to by ANY phone, or computer, etc...just to say you got one!!

Thats the price you pay for volunteering to stand in line and get your iPhone! Everyone KNOWS that prices come down later, ESPECIALLY with cell phones!

GIve me a break and stop whining! You had the money to buy the iPhone, now live with it! Man what a bunch of cry babies!

I agree DesignerOnMac. I have an 8gb iPhone but I knew it was going to drop in price. Whether it was today or 2 months from now, it's bound to happen. Take off your skirts. This happens everywhere. You have a killer phone, now go play with it.

Nothing special about this price drop... in the mobile phone business it is normal practise.. They all do it, Nokia, Motorola...
Heck, I bought a Nokia for over $1000 around 2 years ago, now it is less then $500...

I can't understand why everyone is BAWWWWing about a price drop. If an iPhone was worth $600 to you 2 months ago, then it was worth $600 and you got your money's worth. If you were too impatient to wait for the inevitable price drop, then you have noone to blame but yourself.

well... i was kind of an early adopter. got my 8 gig bout a month ago(thank god it wasnt a 4 gig) and it was worth the price then and still is worth now what i paid for it. i still think its the best electronic device i've owned. i do feel a little bit of the sting but i understand the early adopter part of it and thats the price you pay(even if it is as big and soon as this one) but not once did i ever read a forum or comment from anyone one on here(especially those of you teasing the whinners) that this was gonna happen today. I've heard lots of rumors about an iphone nano, smaller with a few less features at a better price. no one though predicted that good ole steve was going to slash the price by 33%, no one even guessed hed slash the price by 1%. so to you patient souls on this forum, please be kind to us stupid corporate whoreearly adopting morons who, no matter the product, say to ourselves... BUY IT!!! BUY IT NOW YOU CRAZY MOTHER ******

Reading your post, reminded me about the iPhone nano. With the price dropped of the iPhone, does anyone think that the iPhone will be the only model out there. Or if a iPhone Nano does come out, what's its price point - 299.00? Besides being smaller, what's the difference between the models?
