Oh my God!!! Enough people! EVERY single manufacturer out there does this. I bought my Xbox 360 a year and a half ago and now they added HDMI and lowered the price... Should I be getting a rebate?!
You got yours the same time I got mine. They lowered the price 50 bucks and added HDMI. Am I mad? No it took them 18 months to do so. If they had dropped the price by $200 two months from launch I would be pissed. And please note when MS dropped the price of the XB1 (within 3 months of it's release) they gave early adopters (in the UK anyways) two free games (which is better than nothing).

Once again: The drop in iPhone price has everything to do with iPod pricing. The iPod Touch 8gb is $299. There was no way people were going to accept a $300 premium for the iPhone.

Apple will sell probably 10x (20X? 50X?) as many iPod Touch units as they will iPhones. They knew that they had to keep iPod pricing competitive (whereas iPhone pricing apparently was not particularly price sensative, at least for those who bought before today...) The huge profits the iPod line generates had to be the main focus regarding iPod Touch pricing. And, once the iPod Touch 8 gb was priced at $299, the iPhone 8gb at $599 would look ridiculous.

What I would be wary of is the disconinuation of the 4GB. Chances are Apple will be releasing a 16GB iPhone in time for Christmas...

16 pages of crying. Let's just rename this site MacWhingers and be done with it! You knew what you were getting for the money, and Apple doesn't owe you anything after that (except for obviously honoring the manufacturer's warranty, the various software updates and upgrades and all of that). If $600 was too rich for your blood, you should have waited. Try taking some responsibility for your own purchasing decisions. How much did the RAZR and Chocolate come down in price again?

I love the aggressive pricing. Apple is going to grab a very big chunk of marketshare with this move. Heck, they did very well at the old price point.

I might still want to wait for a 16GB iPhone or a 3G model, but... I definitely think I can survive on 8GB. If I want more music, I've still got my third gen 30GB iPod.

I know it is always a risk to buy a product which is out for some time, but I did not expect Apple to drop the price this fast. I bought my 4gb iPhone Thursday last week in an AT&T store: does anyone think I can go back to the store and try asking them for a refund or the 8gb phone?

Please let me know!

yes, you have 14 days to return it, you most likely have to pay a restocking though.
unless you lie to them and tell them you have bad reception and want to cancel your contract and then turn around and go by and register at a different store.

Thank you, I appreciate your comment and finally one that makes sense and addresses the situation with logic. Price drops are inevitable, but as a LOYAL Apple owner and enthusiast for years (not a Microsoft troll as my Macrumors status reaffirms) I don't appreciate such a drastic drop in price only two months since its release. Unheard of.

I brought it up before, but I'll do it again. Aperture. Just a few months after its release the price was dropped by $200. Talk to the Apple Store. A lot of people are reporting that they're getting $200 store credit. Just like what happened with Aperture.

Which do you think that Apple would rather do, give $200 credit to the, maybe, 10% of customers who are paying attention and will ask for it, or take the PR hit of pissing off so many customers?

Damn! I guess that Mac Plus I bought for $2600 is much cheaper now. I guess I should have waited . . . .

iPhone Launch Day: Yippeeee!!!! I love you iPhone!!!

Wednesday, Sept. 5: I can't believe I bought this piece of sh*t!!! I hate you, I hate you, I hate you!!!

Sure, if the iPhone wasn't such a new product and the price drop was over 30%. I'm not raging mad, but a huge price drop so soon after a new product release is a bit of a slap in the face to the buyers that made the iPhone a successful product...

I did not say that I was happy that my new $599 phone was just devalued by $200 so in that way I am somewhat in agreement with you. However, since Apple was jumping into an entirely new market (cell phones) that they had never played in before, I expected that they would be making some substantial marketing adjustments very quickly after the iPhone launch. When I purchased the first one for personal use my wife was the one that suggested that we wait to purchase one for her since she correctly predicted that the price would be cut substantially before the Christmas season.

i guess its now time to consider purchasing hers.

How long was the last rev of the mac mini, iMac, or an other apple product out at the same price level? $200 drop after 2 months is a crime!

"Everything is worth what its purchaser will pay for it." - Publius Syrus

When you bought an iPhone within those first 68 days, you weren't just buying the product. You were buying the coolness of being 'That Guy' (or girl). Your friends saw it, and wanted to play with it. Strangers probably came up to you and marveled at your gadget. Conversations were started, you might have made a new friend or two (or probably just an acquaintance). You also were buying the convenience of having it for those 2 months.

Now, granted, those same people who thought you were the cool one get to have the same product for cheaper, and might think less of your for it.

Myself, I bought one of the new iMacs the weekend after they were released (it was our tax free weekend here in MA), spent about 1800 bucks. If the price went down by 600 bucks in a month, I wouldn't be horribly upset. I'd shrug my shoulders, think that I might have been better off waiting a while. But, I've bought the privilege of being 'That Guy' (something I rarely do, being a thrifty person overall). Every time someone comes over to my apartment (being in college, thats pretty often), they marvel at my computer and how cool it is. I like being That Guy.

Lastly, I'm a fanatically brand loyal person (not just Apple, but Colgate, Coca Cola, whatever), so this next part might not apply to everyone thats pissed off (I doubt it though, since early adopters usually are). So, when I see my favorite brand drop its prices, I'm happy. I'm constantly trying to get my friends to buy Macs. If Apple slashed Mac prices, I know that I'd have a much easier time getting them to do it. And, I'd be happy. But thats just me.

I find it interesting that the individuals posting their displeasure as iPhone users in the sudden and drastic price drop are expressing their frustration maturely while everyone who isn't in that position is flaming them. C'mon guys, as an Apple fan base I know we're better than this. If you don't agree with someone's opinion, address it if you must with some respect and leave the childish antics at the playground.

How does today's iPhone price diminish the value of the phone you bought two months ago?

Two months ago, the iPhone was worth $599 to you, so you bought it. So far as I can tell, the value of the phone didn't change today: only the price did. Well, plus a new feature was added so the value of the phone you quite willingly forked $599 over for two months ago has increased, not decreased.

The only argument you can make for diminished value is if you were planning on selling your iPhone, and now can not get the $500 or so you would have sold it for yesterday.

Listen, folks: always buy technology based on value to you, with the expectation that a few months down the road the same thing will be available either at a much lower price or with more enticing features. If you bought the iPhone to be in some exclusive club: well, congrats to you, but Apple made it quite clear that they wanted to move units here, and so your exclusivity would of course be ending soon.

Please, please: open up a class action lawsuit here. See if you can get a lawyer to agree that you have any grounds - legal or moral or otherwise - for complaint. Maybe you need that reality check.

In short: grow up. If you could afford the iPhone two months ago (along with the monthly service fee), then I don't think you qualify as a downtrodden individual needing pity for his "lost $200".

For all you people demanding that Apple pay you (or give youa coupon) $200 for buying the iPhone over the last two months: Apple owes you nothing! You saw a product that you thought was worth $599 and you gladly paid for it. Apple set the price and you accepted it and the responsibility of paying for it. Is it a big price drop? Absolutely. But Apple does not owe you a refund. Just like Nissan will not mail you a check when Joe Smoe down the street negotiates a lower price for a new car than you were able to negotiate. Take some responsibilities for your actions. You paid the price for a product and you recieved that product. The sale is concluded. If you never want to buy Apple products again, fine, enjoy the new Zunephone, or Ubuntu or whatever. But don't blame Apple for your consumer incontinence.
That is all. Carry on with your pathetic "instant gratification" lives.

Good point.

saying "that's the price you pay for being an early adopter" in this situation is utter B.S. Dropping the price 30% just two months after introduction is a very unusual move. Dropping it this month 6 months to a year is understandable and that's the price for early adopters. But NOT 2 freakin' months later.

And this whole, "well if you spent $600 on a phone a $200 price drop shouldn't matter". Yes, it does matter. It's a slap in the face. It's the principle of the matter.

Don't kill me if it is old news or already posted, but I just purchased my iPhone last Friday, and my store said they will price match it, now that it is $200 less!! I'm relieved now.

Do you mean JUNE 30th? I mean, it's just over 2 months since the thing came out...this is not cool.

yes, i did) my apologies :)
and yes i agree that this price drop isn't cool at all. but what are we to do? i'm not switching to pc's because of this). i have been betrayed a lot in my life, by people i have trusted ) i can forgive apple sooner than them)
and again - i love my iphone!

I concur. It is disappointing...following the Aperture rebate of $200, something in the neighborhood would reduce the pain.

Was it worth the price you paid for it when you paid it?

If yes, then who cares what happened to the price after you bought it? Sure, you could have bought it for less "if you had but known," but it was--to you--worth the price you paid for it at the time you paid it.

My enjoyment of a product and overall satisfaction are not generally affected by how much other people have to pay to get the same experience at at a later date.

a $200 gift card redeemable at Apple Store would be a great move on Apple's part. I'd use it right away to put toward the latest Logic upgrade, or any one of tons of things they sell at high profit margins. In the long run they'd probably make even more money doing this. For example, the Logic upgrade I mentioned is $300. So Apple, I'm just waiting to give you another $100.

Apple would have to issue a statement, though, making to terms strict in order to avoid having to pay back early buyers every time they drop a price.

more people will be happy!

There are more potential buyers then there are early adopters... Apple is there for everyone, not just for the early buyers elite who can afford to pay any price for a new gadget.

Boo Hoo Want Cheese with That?

I bought RAM 30 days ago and now it's half the price.
I bought a hard drive 2 months ago, and now it's a fraction of the price.

With all the whining on here, you'd think Apple should never change any prices or release new products so we could all always have the top of the line item.

Huge hype, big demand, big pricetag to be the first cool kid on the block to have one.

Now that the hype has died down they are re-generating more buzz with a dramatic price drop.

Seems like smart business to me. I bought one at 599, and I still love it.

Were we all happier when Apple was releasing nothing except barely speed bumped g4s???

I bought a PowerMac G4 1.25 Ghz 4.6 years ago! Paid $3,299.00 plus an additional 2 GB of RAM and an extra 80 GB HD. Now it is worth $300.00 on eBay. Apple needs to pay me $2,800.00 for the money I lost on this old computer! Contacting my lawyer NOW!!!

I just spoke to AT&T since my phone is only two weeks old they are going to credit my account I am happy with that. I wouldn't even have complained if I bought it on launch day. I do understand it is a price you pay to be an early adopter. But two weeks old was a serious punch in the face. My suggestion with you guys is call AT&T and be nice with them they may help you out.

I'm not pissed so much because I didn't have to pay for mine (through work) but it would be nice to get $200 bucks towards the iMac I'll be getting soon. Might even spring for the 2.8. The only thing I'm kinda mad about is the iPod classic because I was selling my 80 GB for $250 and had a guy interested and now he'll probably skip out on me.
