You can call us early adopters whiners if you want but personally i dont know if its so much about the money as it is a feeling of slight betrayal from a beloved company. I feel a little let down.. and theres def no reason to ever be an early adopter with these guys again. Im trying to find a sense of humor in it all so I'm putting up a picture i took of myself that day when i rushed home giddy as one of the first 10 people in town to have an iphone.

Pity I didn't get the $399 pricing on my 8GB, but it's been nice having it since day 1. Honestly, this will bring iPhone into even more user's hands. Not sure if that's a good thing... but hopefully will influence Apple to release more firmware updates (if there are more users to complain about missing features).

Shame there wasn't a 16GB iPhone released - I'm still scratching my head on that one. If they can release a 16GB Touch, there's no reason to not release a 16GB iPhone.

probably limited supply of the 16gig chips. i'm sure it'll happen eventually.

"Price Protection" date of 8/17. Bought my wife's phone on 8/11. Called my Apple store, they are giving me $200 credit for my wifes even though we are past the cut-off date.

Unfortunately, I bought my phone from AT&T and would have to talk to them for the other phone. Not even going to waist my time on that one lol..

Hey, atleast I am getting $200 back.

I am happy to see Apple trying to fix this for their customers.

To all the whiners: oh boo hoo. I paid $600 for mine, too, but so what? Did I get what I expected for my money? Yes. Does my iphone work any worse because other people can now get it cheaper? No. So why would I complain?

Exactly. Prices change. When I bought my current Motorola phone from Verizon, I paid $100 for it. A few weeks later they offered it for $50, then shortly thereafter you could get it for free. When I bought it, it was worth the $100 I paid for it to me, or else I wouldn't have bought it.

It's possible the supply of Flash chips isn't enough to support both products, so they gave the memory boost to the new iPod Touch and kept the current iPhone as is for now.

Anyone who is an Apple fan/early adopter didn't expect a price drop like anyone else, and I don't think anyone would have been surprised 6 months from launch when the price dropped a hundred bucks.

But all the morons being all dramatic and talking about how we all should have known are idiots. Not one person expected a friggin 30 some percent drop 2 months in. period. That's unusual and extreme and can't one of you say it isn't.

Not much that can be done of course, but a $50 gift card for the store would be pretty nice and go a long way towards smoothing things over with the fanboys.

The bad business move here is that most of the early adopters are the most rabid apple pushers. Screwing your installed base is a bad move on any level.

At any rate I love my iPhone just the same, and now I can afford one for my wife. Ha.

Thank you, I appreciate your comment and finally one that makes sense and addresses the situation with logic. Price drops are inevitable, but as a LOYAL Apple owner and enthusiast for years (not a Microsoft troll as my Macrumors status reaffirms) I don't appreciate such a drastic drop in price only two months since its release. Unheard of.

Prices don't reduce 30% in only 2 months. No matter the industry.

It causes DEVALUE-ING of products thus making everything seem like they will be cheaper later causing people to hold off buying. Apple recycles its products and prices only a couple of times a year to prevent devalue-ing. The whole reason they didn't want to subsidize the Iphone was to make sure it retained it's value.

This is a horrible decision for the long term (or rather overcharging 200 bucks to begin with was).

Unfair...

THIS IS SOO FREAKING UNFAIR!!! I SAY we email steve jobs... and call APPLE !! I got ripped off 200 buxx Apple just lost a customer.. !! Slowly they'll loose more! SHAME ON U APPLE and STEVE JOBS!

I Am So Pissed Right Now
I Guess Loyal Customers That Buy The Product The Day It Comes Out Get Screwed Over In The End

Ok I Understand I Knew The Price Would Drop Eventually But I Thought Maybe Like A Year After Launch Not Like 3 Or 4 Months Later Ahhhh

Apple Just Kicked Me In The Balls And Stole $200

First of all, for all the whiners, may I politely ask who held a gun to your head and forced you to pay $599 for an 8G iPhone? We should report whoever this person was to the authorities.

Next, this price drop could very well be Apple's way of making room for the 'daddyMac' iPhone with 3G, and more flash storage. They are going to be launching the iPhone in Europe this fall and may not want to enter that market with an EDGE based device.

I got two iPhones one on June 30th and one on Auguest 20th. To be honest I did not catch the manager's name but requested him directly when I talked to the first human I got after calling the Apple store direct. Again if you don't believe me call your local Apple store, only think you would be doing is wasting the ten minutes to get an answer.

Just called my local Apple Store (Willow Bend in Plano, Texas), and got nowhere. Next call is Apple's call center, where I can raise it more and get more attention to it.

Everyone that is laughing right now... you wouldnt be if you bought one. Instead of creating dissention between Apple fans, why dont you try helping out and supporting? If you are of reasonable intellect, you would want the same thing with your big arguement as well. My goal is not to just raise hell... if I get a $200 gift card, I will be very happy... but I want it for everyone else too, im not being selfish with this, its a team effort here. So join the team or shut it and stay out of the way.

I admit I find it hilarious that the people who bought iphones at the previous price are screwed and pissed off. Mirth-city.

But this is a really bad move on apple's part. by d-cking over the apple faithful and early adopters, people are going to be more reluctant in the future to run out and buy the next Big Thing the minute that it hits the shelves.

Jobs really loves screwing people over. Just ask Woz...

bwahahaha

I got my 8gb way below retail and sold it for 25 less than what I bought it for last week. Boy am I glad I didn't wait.

That price drop announcement made me so happy inside. Who pays 600 for a phone?...pfsh..morons. Serves you right to lose 200 dollars.

Old price:
iPhone: $600, two years of service: $1560, total: $2160

New price:
iPhone: $400, two years of service: $1560, total: $1960

Price difference: $200, or 10%. Why freak out over a 10% price drop?

Nice try, but no cigar.

Immediate out of pocket expense, 2 months ago = $600
Immediate out of pocket expense, now = $400

That's a 30% drop in price.

Add to that all of the issues the iPhone had/has and the cost of replacing a battery. Some early adopters had to exchange their phones up to 5 times.

All in all, the iPhone seems to be a pretty disillusioning experience. As a 15 + year Apple user, I find this price drop surprising and extremely disappointing.

My 50" Plasma came down in price $2000 six months after I bought it. I love watching it EVERY DAY!

and if they waited another four months i doubt many people would be blinking an eye. thats half a year on market. makes sense.

i have mixed feelings about this. i bought my 8g on the 30th of april. so i'm not upset like someone who bought it 15 days ago.. on the other hand a 33% price drop after just over two months is outrageous. i feel somewhat betrayed by a company who's products i've been using for years. but this isn't going to make me stop. i love my iphone and i have been enjoying it ever since i got it.. buying it as soon as it came out put me further away from the model update. so everything is relative. 200 bucks is 200 bucks. now my question is:

in the case of the apature update, was the $200 store credit announced immediately, or did it come a couple of days later. in other words does the fact that apple didn't mention it today mean that we are likely not going to get it?

Do you mean JUNE 30th? I mean, it's just over 2 months since the thing came out...this is not cool.

Theyre gonna offer refunds/credits but they won't announce it publicly yet so people don't flood the Apple and AT&T stores.

thoughts..

LOVE the ipod touch, i still like the 'classic' as its now called. not so keen on the new nano, if people wanna watch videos and stuff on thier iPod, use a classic or the touch? i think the current incarnation is pretty much perfect.

and not loving the colours at all. can you say 80's shellsuit ?

but overall, a fantastic update. really impressive.

what i'm thinking now is, what else can apple possibly do? thier computer line is great, ipods are a runaway success, iphone is a beast, but whats next? whats going to be the new 'revolutionary' product? :apple::rolleyes:

I am speechless. Really poor on Apple's part. It will no doubt piss off the very loyal fan base who helped them sell 1 million phones - I hope they consider that.

They already did. This is Apple we're talking about here.

And if people think Apple will shell out $200 or the equivalent to almost 1 million people, y'all need to wake up and smell the coffee. You happily paid $600 for the iPhone. I didnt, either cos that was wayyy past my valuation, or I didnt have the money. You've been showing it off the past 2/3 months. Worth the $200 difference? Maybe.

Either way, this is some pretty friggin sweet news!!!

This kind of price drop on mobile phones is hardly unusual...

Hopefully by the time the iPhone makes it over to Europe they will be free and on a twelve month contract...
