incredible,

and I just realize it's a $200 drop, unbelievable (I first thought it was $100 and was still amazed!!!).

This is such great news.

I feel bad for those who spent hours in line and $499 though.

For once I made the right decision !!!
And now I will wait a little longer, another month and another drop may be !?

I think people are complaining in places other than forums...as I type this...my $600 iPhone is telling me that AAPL is DOWN 6.75 points.

That's pretty standard: buy on rumors, sell on news. (no matter how good the news.)

Then again...a free/discounted upgrade to Leopard would be pretty sweet compensation...

I think that would be swell. A complimentary version of 10.5 for all us Mac/iPhone owners. I was upset initially. After talking with my wife she pointed out the bright side. "We have no debt. We basically buy things on a whim cause we can. It was only $200, the world isn't ending." (Quoting the wife).

Definitely. I'm surprised Apple didn't announce a 16Gig iPhone at the $599 price point.

I'm amazed they haven't launched the iPhone or touch iPod with a hard drive. It's the one iPod that really needs the storage space. I guess it might be a battery life issue.

Quit Your Whining!

Wow! I didn't realize that all the iPhones in the world dropped in value within a couple of hours. </sarcasm>

Come on guys. Quit your whining.

I bought the iPhone on the first day knowing that I'm most likely paying a huge premium as an early adopter. To me, it was worth $600 to get it on the first day. Is it still worth that much to me now? Yes. It's a sunk cost and I am happy with it.

Listen people, we live in a capitalist society. The idea of the capitalist society is that people pay what they are willing to pay to get a certain product or service. In other words, a product or service is worth what people are willing to pay for it. If you don't think the iPhone was worth $600, then you shouldn't have bought it.

This is the same as two different people paying different prices for airplane seats right next to each other. One person may only be willing to pay $100. The person sitting next to him is willing to pay $2000. Although the service is the same, the product is different. The second person is willing to pay a premium for additional service such as last minute flight or refundable flight.

This is the same in this situation. Apple captured the high end early adopter market. Now they are moving into capturing the middle tier market.

BTW: I hedged my purchase of the iPhone with buying Apple stock. I've made more than enough on the stock to buy the iPhone many times over.

battery life and size issue. especially where the phone is concerned.

I wonder if this is the kind of reaction that Stevie was looking for after his big "event"??

That's because all the analysts had priced in the huge margin on the iPhone that has dissipated in one day. The iPhone will have to sell a huge number of units now to make up for the margin squeeze. Could be time to short AAPL, this downturn could last a while, it not like the new iPods will increase the number of iPods sold, the only thing AAPL shareholders (like me) got today was lower profits.

I think you're missing the point. A mere two months or so after the release and they drop the price by $200, that is a huge slap in the face to the individuals who bought the product, helping to make it a success. Instead of throwing insults at people for expressing their frustration, take a step back, breath, and try and understand their point of view. It might help.

Exactly. I've been loyal to Apple for many years but now I'm genuinely pissed. For them to drop the price by 35% in just two months for the exact same product is just egregious. It indeed is a big slap in the face to those who helped make iPhone a success by investing it one early. Unless Apple comes out with a $100 gift card for those who owned an iPhone previous to today and paid the release price, I am going to be very disappointed in my favorite company and will know never to purchase another Apple product again right at release.

It's sort of like trading in the stock market before 10:30AM. Everyone recommends against it because of how much the stock can change in the first hour of trading. That said, it seems we all should boycott Apple products until 2 months after they are released and pray the low demand doesn't cause them to be discontinued.

I still think it's related to the spinning hard drive messing with the gyroscopes it uses to determine orientation, but I haven't had a reply from anyone who might actually know something about this.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Don't all phones have a price drop in the first couple of months?

(I bought mine on launch, but KNEW what was going to happen. You are a fool to think the price was going to stay at $600. Treos have $200 price drops all the time.)

Just spoke with apple store near here in Seattle, WA. They are refunding money on the difference, even if you bought it on launch day. Just bring the receipt in. YAY.

Even got the names of two assistant managers who are doing it. Talk to your store and see if they are going to do this for you. The assistant manager said it was on the policy of the store manager, so it may or may not be company wide!

Good luck all.

Kellen

I have not looked at the news carefully yet, but I must say, a reduction of such magnitude to me is suspicious.

Could Apple be seriously disappointed with sales so far (compared to Their expectations) ? Again, dudes, $200 less in just a few weeks !!!!

Still too expensive anyway.

I was all set to spend some of money on an updated iPod. After this I'm done with Apple. the iPhone will be the last $'s I give to Apple. A 33% price drop after 2 months is completely unacceptable for any product.

Yeah, right. You're telling me you won't update your MacBook when it's time? You gonna go back to Windows? Please.

I just called the apple store here in las vegas and they said they are only offering assistance to those who bought the iphone within the last 2 weeks. Bought mine august 4th.:(

Yes, I was expecting iPhone touch to be hard disc based. HD isn't that much of a big deal - other phones have HDs and their batteries aren't too bad - saying that - they don't have a huge touch screen like the iPhone.

Also, I doubt they could get the iPhone / Touch to be as thin...

Apple just **** on the faces of those who supported them the most--including myself.

They better pull through with some collateral damage or this is going to be a mighty thorn in my back for some time.

I just wonder whats behind that price drop. its not that I complain or something but it looks like maybe they will announce 3G model and just trying to clean up inventory. interesting.........

As an earlier poster said:

Stick up for your fellow apple junkies or they might not be around to stick up for you.
......

For years, Apple has had something of a cult following. Because they were the underdogs, as opposed to Microsoft, a lot of people strongly identified with the company.

Apple made products that were a cut above. The design and the operating systems were geared towards a great consumer experience. Quality, though not value was everything.

It seems like, for the last few years now, Apple has gotten greedy. The more their product line and market has expanded the less important the fan base has become.

People stood in line for hours for the iPhone. Those who got buggy phones, put up with an incredible amount of agravation and disappointment, and even then, refused to give up on them.

While price drops are a fact of life, I've never heard of such a highly hyped product dropping by 30% in 2 months. It feels like a kick in the gut, and I'm one of those who decided to hold off, until the second gen.

After a day or two , things usually calm down a bit here, but
i'm sorry, just have to jump in here against my better judgment.

I know there is no point reasoning with a mob, but seriously, what is the problem?
Apple introduces some new products and lowers some prices and you
guys are negative?
i don't get it.
these are just gizmos that are non essential to your survival here on earth.

Additionally, Apple has put a RIDICULOUS amount of money into R&D for multitouch; I expect they intend to use it in far more than just the iPhone. Could it be that the iPhone has made enough money to pay for the R&D costs and Apple can afford a smaller profit now?

You have to consider too, that Apple now sells much more devices with a 8Gb memory chip (the nano, the touch); so they have probably reduced costs there.
And well, we all knew that the iPhone was going to have a price-drop some day, I didn't expect it so soon though. But hey, I'm happy: now I have to wait until someone confirms the unlocking process and I'm good to go.

Rebate

Just read this on the Apple forums

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1115485&tstart=0

I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH ONE OF THE HEADS OVER AT APPLE THEY SAID THEY UNDERSTAND EVERYONE CURRENT IPHONE CUSTOMERS DISSAPOINTMENT..

A $200 REBATE FORM WILL BE ADDED ON APPLE WITHIN THE WEEK AND ITS A REQUEST FOR A $200 REBATE!
YOU'RE ALL SAVED

EDIT..i wrote down as much as I could

"Right now we're reviewing the overwhelming response of the iPhone's price cut, and had no idea it would result in over powering the news of our new iPod family, thus tarnishing this memorable day. As a result we are happily willing to give a $200 3 week rebate if your phone was purchased inside a retail store."

I also confirmed

"Once posted the rebate form will remain open for 7 days, giving a week for current iPhone customers to apply; after 1 week, we will not process any new rebate requests"

that is from Mark Miller one of APPLE Inc's marketing heads.

THIS IS GREAT NEWS

Did not expect that much of a price drop. But remember, phones drop their value at an extreme rate. That's the nature of the phone market.

I dumped mine... and who was saying that was a bad idea again???? Who's laughing now...

I'm laughing at you as it's insanely obvious you know nothing about the stock market, much less Apple stock. It's been one of the most rock solid market performers for the last 3+ years. Ask any analyst worth his salt or hell, just look at the yearly graphs. It's been up and down $5-10 almost every other week for months, but not many others (if any) can match it on the exchange right now.
