I admit that 3 months is a short span, but even if Apple dropped the price a year from now, anybody who bought one at the original price would be upset. I would be, too. But surely we don't want Apple to keep prices high so that people who paid those prices won't feel betrayed.

Again. Bought a 50" Plasma and the price went down by $2000 in less than six motnhs. I LOVE it every day.

My Refund Experience After Price Drop

I am a fairly recent switcher to Apple (Feb 2006). l generally love the products and have been extremely happy with the iMac and the iPhone. I don't necessarily drink the apple bathwater, but I do tout to friends and family the ease of use and intuitiveness of some of the products.

I agree with most of the folks who are disappointed with the price drop and regardless of what other people are saying in this forum, most companies do NOT drop prices on their products that much that quickly.

My wife purchased the iPhone as a gift for me :D on August 17th. Yes that means I missed the 14-day return window by 4 days or so.

As any enterprising person might do, I called the Apple Store where my wife purchased the phone and explained my disappointment and I would appreciate whatever they could do for me. The store clerk was extremely rude, unhelpful, said "your out of luck buddy". I asked to speak with the store manager and the clerk said, "The Manager's too busy, call back later". Now this is my first experience with any level of Apple customer service and at this point I was even more upset. He could have taken my name, had the manager call me back, or something. But the shear rudeness was just appalling.

So I called the main Apple customer service number. The only way I could get to a person was to go through the menu system as if I wanted to buy an iPhone. I explained I was disappointed in the price drop, but even more disappointed in the way my call was handled by the local store clerk.

The guy on the main Apple line hinted at the fact that there really wasn't any corporate-wide policy on refunds aside from the 14-day rule. So he put me on hold, called my local Apple store, got the manager on the phone and pulled me back into the call. The manager apologized profusely for the store clerk. He said he couldn't give me a straight rebate due to my purchase being past the 14 days, but he did offer and "In-store Credit" of $200. That was good customer service and needless to say I'm extremely happy with the results.

I think I'll use the $200 to buy my wife the iPhone :)

Well, I'm not expecting anything, but I'm just saying it'd be nice. I'm not one to threaten never buying again, especially when I'm well aware that I'll likely still buy Apple products in the future.

They have an opportunity to make a considerate gesture here - and that gesture is theirs to make, with or without threats of losing loyal customers. My original comment was more meant along the lines of building upon relationships, as opposed to avoid losing them.

That all sounds very nice, but does this relationship building help drive the share price, because I think that's about how all decisions at Apple are made (at any publicly traded company for that matter).

A Nokia phone doesn't even deserve to be in the same sentence as an iPhone...
Why doesn't the Nokia deserve to be compared to the iPhone? Steve compares them even though the Nokia clearly out features the iPhone and is aimed at a different market, the 'proper' smarthone.

...And i seriously doubt that all of us who bought iPhone's the first day are the dumbest people in the room. Just because we got screwed doesn't make us dumb...
You're right again! But I never said that everyone who bought the iPhone at launch was dumb did I. You're not dumb because you bought the iPhone.

...You didn't even have the option to use an iPhone....
I wouldn't have wanted to even with the option... Option: funny word that isn't it, almost implies nobody forced you to pay $600 for the thing...

what a joke!

I have never been so disappointed in a company before in my life. My 4gb iphone is now obsolete after 60 days!?! What a joke! I have been learning how to use my new Mac Mini for a few months now and admitedly was getting drunk off the Kool-Aid. Now I see I have made a huge mistake. Thanks for the wake up call Apple. I knew there was a reason I never liked your products. I guess I should start learning Vista! Way to go Apple, keep up the great Customer Appreciation!

Im starting a club... you all are invited to join... its called the I'M ******* PISSED ABOUT MY IPHONE DEAL club... dont worry... memberships are free for life... as you already paid $200 to Apple to beta test something for them.

Steve Jobs just taught you a bible lesson:

Matthew 20

Parable of the Vineyard Workers

“For the Kingdom of Heaven is like the landowner who went out early one morning to hire workers for his vineyard. He agreed to pay the normal daily wage and sent them out to work.

“At nine o’clock in the morning he was passing through the marketplace and saw some people standing around doing nothing. So he hired them, telling them he would pay them whatever was right at the end of the day. So they went to work in the vineyard. At noon and again at three o’clock he did the same thing.

“At five o’clock that afternoon he was in town again and saw some more people standing around. He asked them, ‘Why haven’t you been working today?’

“They replied, ‘Because no one hired us.’

“The landowner told them, ‘Then go out and join the others in my vineyard.’

“That evening he told the foreman to call the workers in and pay them, beginning with the last workers first. When those hired at five o’clock were paid, each received a full day’s wage. When those hired first came to get their pay, they assumed they would receive more. But they, too, were paid a day’s wage. When they received their pay, they protested to the owner, ‘Those people worked only one hour, and yet you’ve paid them just as much as you paid us who worked all day in the scorching heat.’

“He answered one of them, ‘Friend, I haven’t been unfair! Didn’t you agree to work all day for the usual wage? Take your money and go. I wanted to pay this last worker the same as you. Is it against the law for me to do what I want with my money? Should you be jealous because I am kind to others?’

“So those who are last now will be first then, and those who are first will be last.”

AT&T Stores last to know of new price.

If you recently purchased an iPhone or plan on getting one since the price drop, currently AT&T stores were not notified and STILL selling both iPhone models and at the original price. AT&T is selling the 8GB at the original price and giving a $200 credit since their system doesn't have the new price.

I bought my phone on Friday and A&TT skipped procedure and just gave me $200 credit rather than work an exchange and the whole re-stocking fee thing.

Apparently AT&T wasn't told about the change since when I talked to one of the sales reps they were told when somebody came in asking to return their phone.

I'm not sure why everyone is SO pissed. The hardware dropped in price, and apple realized most consumers weren't willing to pay 600. You guys got your two months exclusivity, its all part of the 'apple product cycle'. You got caught up in the hype and were willing to pay 600.

Its just like when the PS2 came out here in Australia. It started at crazy over 1000$ prices and quickly fell to the 800's, then slowly spiraling down. Big gizmos always start that way... doesn't anyone remember?

The price of early adoption of big, expensive hyped up devices is always going to be $50-100/month.

Congrats with that! I am going to try and talk to my Apple Store manager and see what can happen. I had one of the two iphones go dead on me as well... hrmmm

Why is it obsolete? Still works, doesn't it?

And at MAcWorld in five months, the iPhone will have a bigger flashdrive for the same price. Will you be pissed at that too? And then a few months later....

Thats five months... this is two....

...and from what I hear, the way apple store employees are handling the situation is very inconsiterate and rude... Personally, I feel Apple should take back all the free 8 GB iPhones they gave their employees for flaunting this whole situation in the early adopter/consumer's face.

From the story on FoxNews.com:

"People who bought the iPhone weeks or months ago must really be annoyed, and with good reason," Tim Beyers, an analyst at The Motley Fool research and investment group, told the Associated Press. "They might think twice about being the first to buy future Apple products. This smacks a little of desperation, and it's very unlike Apple."

Here is what Apple Should do: Credit everyone back $100. and then donate another 50. per phone to Project Red!!

Everyone wins and feels good!!! :)

If I bought a product and it dropped $200 within 2 months, I'd be kind of annoyed, but that's why I never buy bleeding edge products where this type of occurrence is not unusual. You paid a premium to have a bleeding edge product that you could brag about to everyone you knew, and you totally got your money's worth!

Unless you bought an iPhone in the past 2 weeks, 30 days max, then you have no legitimate claim to be upset. A little bit annoyed, that's understandable, but that's all.

5 months + 2 months = 7 months. Anything after 6 months becomes logical. I bought mine expecting something new to be out 6 months down the road.

Thanks for pointing out the 5 months though, you are a very helpful person!

That all sounds very nice, but does this relationship building help drive the share price, because I think that's about how all decisions at Apple are made (at any publicly traded company for that matter).

Of course Apple are a business. I realize such relationship building probably won't help the share price in the short term, but believe that there are upsides in the mid to long-term in terms of future early-adopting, positive PR, and consumers being less paranoid overall about purchasing Apple products. They're not obligated to make this their policy, but the opportunity exists.

I'd like to know what bleeding edge product drops in value this high of a percentage just after 2 months? Xbox? Nope... Wii? Nope... Hmm, nothing? Interesting situation.

What's obsolute about it? You mean you can't listen to music or make calls anymore? CRAP! I have a four year old car. It still runs.

Yeah go to Vista or sign up with a Microsoft music service that all of a sudden dissappears!

Yes and that was $2000. not $200. !

I bought the iPhone 6 days ago. That is only 2 months after its release. And today, only 6 days after the purchase it is 30% cheaper.

Someone else posted that if you are in a 14 day window from today you can get $200 back.

I would drop by the apple store and find out.

My 4gb iphone is now obsolete after 60 days!?! What a joke! I

Your phone no longer dials?

Call applecare. Perhaps they can find out why your iPhone suddenly became "obsolete" today and no longer dials....

?!??!

I'd be happy with a $100 credit to either the Apple or iTunes stores.

Let's face it guys. The iPod touch is THE touch screen apple product number one. The touch screen was meant for the iPod but debuted in the iPhone so that Apple could make some quick cash in the phone business.

That is the reason why the iPod touch is a phone less iPhone. Cannibalizations in the highest degree.

All of you first adopters have been used like hookers.

..............except for Apple. $100 times the million of iPhones sold quickly adds up to a whole lot of money.
