So, all the complainers think Apple should have kept the price high to justify their purchases? They decided that it was worth it at the time to spend the amount they did. Apple obviously discovered that it would be unable to sell the number it wanted at the price it was asking, so it adjusted the price. The motivation seems to be to increase market share, and in doing so, increase the subscription income. To be quite honest, the iPhone was a bit over-priced when it was introduced. But those ppl who bought it decided that it was worth the price to them.
So, why all the complaints about the price change? Did Apple offer a guarantee that the price would always stay the same? Why don't all the ppl who bought 20" iMacs before the new model was introduced complain that a better model was introduced for $200 less? And how about those ppl who forked out $$$ to buy a Motorola RAZR when it was first introduced, only to see it subsequently offered for free with a new contract? With comsumer electronics, if you delay a purchase, you can always get more for your money in the future.
And for those who say Apple clearly planned this price drop when it introduced the iPhone, please tell me why Apple even bothered to introduce the 4GB model. It was a significant waste of time and money to introduce this model. If Apple had knowledge beforehand about how sales would turn out, then it would have never made the 4GB model, and it would have probably introduced the 8GB model for $499.
It seems that Apple realized that nobody wanted the 4GB model, but at the same time, most ppl would not be willing to pay more than $400 for a phone.
