$100 Back?

Apple CEO Steve Jobs just posted an open email to you guys saying you get a $100 store credit.

You realize, that Apple will probably replace your iPhone with a 4G model when you "accidentally" drop your cell phone.

I am trying very hard not to "accidentally" drop my phone period. Shoulda seen me at the grocery store last week. Lost major cool points, but didn't drop the phone. Did have to purchase a jar of mayo I broke tho.

Note: Don't ever try to show someone the coolness of coverflow with 1 hand.

I am referring more to the fact that I have 34 months to go on my 1st Gen phone and the fact that I had to send my first one back to Apple because it didn't work.

I have seen too many people with Applecare get new machines (ie. different generations) when their old Mac died while under Applecare and refurbs were not available. This is why every Mac product I own has Applecare. I love peace of mind.

Just because you would think about "accidentally" dropping your iPhone to replace it, doesn't mean that I would.

iphone discontinued

I just talked to an AT&T sales rep on the phone about upgrading to an iphone and she said that today they all received a memo stating that the iphone was being discontinued and i asked her to confirm this and she did...maybe she got it wrong hat they were only discontinuing the 4gb model...there is no way in hell they would discontinue both models. anyways, thought it could lead to other things.

a friend of yours eh?

Yes. I don't see the problem with that. He basically bought it for me while he was visiting washington last week. He paid for it using his credit card. And now that I am in Europe I am wondering how it is possible to get the refund since I can't walk into an Apple store and ask for it personally.

I would encourage people to file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov

As a consumer of Apple products, I am outraged at the recent drop of the Apple iPhone of 33% after only nine weeks on the market. I purchased three phones from Apple directly off their web site, two on June 29 and one on July 17. I just spent 48+ minutes waiting on hold for a representative (Tim) to explain to me why I shouldn't be upset about the drastic price reduction when, only 9 weeks later, the price went from $599 to $399. I then spent another 15 minutes waiting to speak to a supervisor, (Jessica, extension # 46359) to basically tell me "too bad, that's technology for you as prices come down all the time." She presented no insight into the situation and was, quite frankly, geared to do nothing but stonewall.

The fact is I have made tens of thousands of dollars worth of technology purchases over the years and recognize that product pricing goes down after a product has been on the market for awhile. However, this is an unprecedented drop in a few short weeks and is outrageous in the extreme. Apple announced this price drop the same day they announced all their new iPod products and is certainly no coincidence. For months through the winter and spring of this year they plied us with commercials about the iPhone, hyping it more than any pre-product launch I can recall. I feel this is akin to a "bait and switch" ploy by Apple since I feel I can assume that most of the first purchasers of this product were die-hard Apple customers such as myself, and that what Apple has done is take advantage of that loyalty.

I want to know why I deserve this punishment from Apple. Furthermore, I would like to know who I should direct my outrage to regarding the use of Apple computers in Maine's schools. Unless Apple does the right thing in this situation, I intend to focus my future efforts on purchasing laptops for Maine's school children from a PC manufacturer.

Sure hope that's not your name and that your superiors don't hear about this. If I were among the powers that be in Maine state government, I would be quite concerned that a Maine employee with purchasing power had become so unhinged that he was going around making threats against Apple to the FTC because he wasn't happy with the consequences of a purchase in his individual capacity.

I think you are mistaking AppleCare for insurance. It's an extended warranty, not insurance. The 4GB didn't sell well, so I'm sure they have plenty to hold back for AppleCare. My boyfriend took an iPod mini back about a year ago and they still had a mini to replace his broken one.

Talk about being punished. You're going to take part in making those poor children use a PC instead of a Mac? Nobody deserves that :)

To be honest, I work at a help desk for a large university. I HATE people like you. This whole entire posts makes me thing that I am at work. Do you not see how stupid you sound? Really?

You all talk the talk, but as the market share grows I doubt Steve will notice when you all put off for a week from buying the newest and latest.

I dont know how many times I can say it. You were not duped, in any way shape or form. You assesed that an iPhone was worth the 599 you paid and you recieved an iPhone. End of story. FTC will laugh in your face just as much as the people did when they hung up the phone with you.

You just so don't get it. It ain't about the $200 dollars. I could easily afford my "Collector's Edition" AKA (4G). It is about the fact that Apple planned this BEFORE they released the iPhone. Then Steve told all of us to get bent.

No *YOU* don't get it. Let me break it down for you. I'm out $1800 on a mattress that hurts my back and you guys are CRYING about Apple DROPPING the price $200 on a phone you were MORE THAN WILLING to pay $600 for back at the end of June. Boo hoo! You guy are such whining pathetic CRY BABIES I could just scream. You don't DESERVE an iPhone! Either it's worth $600 to you or it's not. It's called PROFIT. If you were the one selling something and someone was willing to pay you $600 you'd be HAPPY to take it instead of $400. It's called supply and demand. Obviously, eager customers willing to pay $600 for a phone will recoup Apple's costs and investment a LOT faster than $400, even if they're still making SOME money at $400. If demand isn't meeting expectations on a product, you lower the price. That's Business 101.

The only SAD thing here is how Apple kow-towed to a bunch of whining crybabies!

Will all you crybabies help me write hate mail letters to Sealy so I can get my money back on my mattress? Yeah, once again, that's what I thought. HYPOCRITES. It's ONLY because it happened to YOU!

Personally, I LIKE price DROPS. The only thing I don't like about Apple is you never have a clue when these things are going to happen so it's kind of hard to plan a purchase when you'd REALLY like to know when a MacBook is going to get the Santa Rosa chipset. But unlike you, I WAIT until the product is what *I* want it to be and THEN buy it. No regrets. No crying because the dropped the price $200 before Christmas to gain sales. No acting like the whining hypocrites you ALL are that are crying about it. You wanted iPhone. You were WILLING to pay $600 for it. You GOT an iPhone. Now you're saying you got screwed? Man, that seriously ticks me off. Steve should have let you all cry in agony. I would have and this is a 100% departure from my usual attitude about Apple's secrecy tactics simply because the DROP is a GOOD THING for EVERYONE except those that feel their neighbor shouldn't get an iPhone for less than YOU.

Lesson Learned

I think I missed this day of business school. Since when do you make your current customers feel stupid in order to achieve new ones?

I’m not upset at the fact that Apple decides to lower their prices. What I am upset about and what I think most of other iphone owners are upset about is the way they went about doing it. First, is a question of the timing, this phone is only TWO months old. Second, every iphone owner should’ve received an e-mail, text message, iTunes update, telling them of the credit BEFORE anyone else.

Then, there’s a question of the credit itself. Why must we continue to spend our money on their BS? We should receive a rebate for the full $200.

Do they honestly think that we’re going to forget about this the next time they release their next overprice gadget?

I haven’t been this perpetrated with no lubrication by a company since the Sega Genesis/Saturn days, lol.

I wonder how all those Ebay iphone buyers feel?

Good gracious. It's your choice to feel stupid because you spent more for the same thing 2 months in advance. This kind of thing happens all the time in the tech industry and ESPECIALLY in computer chips. Try a fun one on for size: Apple released the last TiBook, 1 GHz, in late September or early November of 2002. 2 months later, in January of 2003, they announced the new AlBooks. I bought one of those 15 inch TiBooks. I would have been much more tempted by the 12 inch, which would have cost a lot less.

Oh well. Chips get cheaper every month, but Apple sells their laptops for the same price for many months on end, only dropping prices a few times a year. Who complains that apple charges a heavier premium as time goes on, something even less sensible than this?

The bottom line is, a company offers you a product for $x, and you buy it or you don't. They don't promise that they won't soon be selling it for $y, higher or lower. I got an 80 GB iPod 4 months ago that cost a lot more than the new one with MUCH better features does now. Why is this kind of thing considered rape from you, like you didn't know price cuts could happen?

It's just a bunch of sour grapes.

BTW, i'll give you $200 cash if you want.

... for your iPhone :p

Wow, a new reason for whining. Didn't expect that one!

I'm sorry, I was wonder the impression that this site was about expressing your thoughts and feelings about apple products. Whining or not, it's how I feel about the subject.

Does attacking my so call "whining" make you feel superior?

If I was steve jobs i would take a bath in every dollar you *******s spent on the iphone...If there was no start off rebate you had to have known a price drop was coming...Less money = more customers.. Yes the iphone is probally worth 600 dollars to the people who waited in line, thats why "you" waited in line..I was planning on buying an iphone but it wasnt worth 600 dollars to me and thats why i didnt buy it the first day

Lol, that's a good one and I do understand where you're coming from and I know how the tech industry work. Can you please show me an example where any products price dropped $200 TWO months after release?

Just to throw it in everyones face i think i may go to apple and buy a 400 dollar 8 gb iphone tomorrow..even though "you" got a 100 gift card, ill still be paying 100 dollars less than "you" did

some further thoughts

Honestly this was pretty much a blunder brought about by unpreparedness.

The whole price cut felt like a tacked on addition to the event. This is Apple's first foray into the cell phone world, so they're not that experienced with the whole deal yet and really just getting their feet wet.

My friend bought his 8gb on launch day. From what I understand from 3 other friends who did the same, and countless others on the forums, Apple has been crediting people from $100-the full $200 in Apple store credit. That's a pretty cool thing to do, considering the circumstance. They don't have to do this, but it shows they're at least trying to make amends.

I think that the price drop was brought about by one of the following reasons, or perhaps a combination of a few to all.

1. They really overestimated the need for a lower-end model ie the 4gb
2. iPhone sales were not as amazing as they predicted, so they had to spur the sales any way they could. (Remember this was touted as awe-inspiring and a revolution in phones)
3. Apple felt the "event' was kind of lackluster since the only new thing they really introduced that was a touch iPod with WiFi. The price cut was tacked on last minute to "round out" the news.
4. Apple's new to the cell phone market, so the volatility of prices is to be expected. The RAZR is a good example....$500 phone is a giveaway 2 months after its original debut.
5. And lastly, (and unlikely in my opinion but I heard this opinion today so I figured I'd include it) that Apple made enough off of initial sales to be able to pass savings onto consumers. Highest model of the product for the low-end price.

All in all jerk move to early-adopters, but then again buying an iPhone even today I'd still consider early-adoption.

Others thoughts?

You know when people keep saying that it makes me think of two things...

-The iPhone was way overpriced to begin with, (a brilliant piece of marketing by the Apple marketing co.) and we're seeing true market value now.

-It's still a huge price cut. We just got a PS3 price cut, 6 months after release and that was only $100, AND only on existing 60Gb model stocked.

I still think it's kind of shady to effectively make launch-dayers feel like they had $200 bragging rights for 69 days. I half wish they kept it at $599 even thought they thought they should drop the price, just for the early adopters.

Wow, stop your whining

My first question to all of you, 'Does any store in America ever hold a SALE?'
I can go into a department store, buy a TV, then 2 weeks later they hold a sale $500 bucks off. Bugger, but thats my bad luck. (actually where I work often sell a BBQ which has a regular retail price of $2000, at $1000)
Sure this is a more permanent price change, however you were early adopters, thats the price you pay.
Obviously you valued the iPhone at $600 originally, otherwise you would not have bought it.
As for demanding the full $200 back, thats outrageous. You have had the phone for longer and bragging rights, why should you get the full amount back.
In my opinion you are very lucky to get a $100 credit.

Motorola Razr V3

Launch - 16 Nov 2004 - $499 with contract

Jan 22 2005 - $339 with contract

That's $160 drop in 2 months and 6 days. Seriously, Apple shouldn't introduce price cuts any more. This reaction from customers will only force them into keeping prices fixed for a long time - which is pretty sad.

It's the typical American consumer. I see it happening everyday - they buy something for bragging rights, something they really can't afford.. and it shocks them when the price drops.

I need a Mac Pro for my work, and I pay $3000 for it. If it drops to $2000 in 2 weeks - too bad. I'm not going to go on a death rant - I more than make up for my mac pro purchase through my work.

For the average teen who checks his myspace account on his iPhone.. a $200 price drop is too much to digest.

The complainers are just laughable. I now know what sort of morons are responsible for George Bush being president.
