People are seriously still crying about this?

I bought an 8 gig iphone on launch day and could really care less about the $200 price drop. If the $200 you think you are owed is really that big a deal to you, you probably shouldnt be buying $600 phones, or $400 dollar phones for that matter. It seems like what we have here is a bunch of people who bought a product that they really couldnt afford, but just had to have it anyway. Now they are complaining about issues that go hand in hand with buying overpriced luxury items. And for those complaining about the fact that your phone is now no longer a luxury item because it is now affordable to "everyone," you really need to work on your self esteem and realize that a material object doesnt make you better or more interesting to anyone besides yourself.

Well put....my thoughts exactly... it boils down to people complaining about spending more money than they have. (not all of you:))

Now, since more people can afford to buy the new 'reasonably" priced iPhone...the people who already have them are no longer in the "elite".

Don't worry, there will be plenty of other things to complain about next month... High gas prices, the sub-prime mortgage crisis.... remember people... the iPhone is a luxury item... in general, you tend to pay a bit more for that "Luxury"....eventually all Hi-Tech items' prices drop... this just happened sooner than later....

I want to know why I deserve this punishment from Apple. Furthermore, I would like to know who I should direct my outrage to regarding the use of Apple computers in Maine's schools. Unless Apple does the right thing in this situation, I intend to focus my future efforts on purchasing laptops for Maine's school children from a PC manufacturer.

This is one of most ridiculous postings I've ever seen on this board. Yes, it always hurts for the early adapters when a price is reduced, but that's the nature of technology. It happens with digital cameras, GPS's, and it's especially true with computers. Personally, I learned years ago it's not always best to be the first kid on the block to own the new technology. If you chose to do so it's because you've decided that it's a fair value to you, or you were making an impulse purchase. This poster is angry that today others are getting the benefit of a lower price than what he paid. In the future I would suggest not making any technology purchases. This will reduce the possibility of you having to go through this anguish again, and spend considerable time on the phone with vendors, government agencies, and potentially time on the couch with a counselor.

Just read this on the wall street journal website

BREAKING NEWS:
Apple's Steve Jobs apologized to early iPhone buyers after the company cut the gadget's price by $200, and said existing customers would get a $100 store credit. Full article coming soon.

Wow. I have never seen something like this. Such an uproar over a price drop! A PRICE DROP!

Break it down into simple economics. You all stood out in a line for hours to get a product you valued at $599.(Plus the time, but whatevs) No one forced you, you wanted the iPhone you paid the price.

Now the market warrants Steve to drop the price by 200 and you all raise hell because the iPhone really only meant 399 to you when you bought it?

I lost money buying my MacBook before the update. Am I sour? No. When I heard the news I hugged my MB and realized I could not have lived that months without it.

Everyone knows don't buy new stuff. Apple has always beat to their own drum, do you really thing price drops could be any different?

I totally agree, but people, not every one of the near million people who bought the phone in the last three months waited in line overnight to get it. Those people are really just a small minority of iphone owners.

That was followed by, "And that's the last time Apple ever announces a price drop again! Sheesh!" ;)

You just so don't get it. It ain't about the $200 dollars. I could easily afford my "Collector's Edition" AKA (4G). It is about the fact that Apple planned this BEFORE they released the iPhone. Then Steve told all of us to get bent.

Let me break some economics down for you: Stevie is going to learn about the concept of "substitute goods". He is also going to learn about ROI (return on investment) because I can promise you every one of us that bought early are going remember this when we make our next Apple purchase.

I suspect Apple will never have another day like iPhone day. Every early adapter is going to remember this stunt and I promise a $100 dollar credit at the Apple store isn't going to erase it.

So tell me, how much has the MacPro dropped since it's introduction? Oh, that's right, the price hasn't dropped. But you can be sure all of the components have dropped in price since release.

How much did each generation of iPod drop? Prices only changed when Apple moved from 1 Generation to another. This did not happen for the iPhone.

What people are angry about is the fact that Apple has NEVER pulled a stunt like this.

I suspect most people are going to make sure that they get their money's worth on this. I was looking at a replacement in 18 months. Not now, I'll keep this bad boy until at least 4 Jul 09 (Gotta love Applecare). The best part is that if this phone doesn't go the distance, I will get a much better product. And based on Apple's QA, I suspect before Applecare runs out I will have a 8 or 16G iPhone (I am already on my second iPhone).

hey we get $100 better then nothing. I can live with that.

Told ya...

...
And, as for getting money back, maybe you will. Everyone's jumping to the conclusion that the price drop is the end of the news. Does anyone remember with Aperture's price dropped from $499 to $299? Again, a $200 price drop. Again, due to market factors. And everyone who had bought Aperture was up in arms about it. And what happened? Very shortly thereafter people started getting notice that they were being given a $200 credit at the Apple Store. So, who knows, maybe Apple will do the same thing or something similar with the iPhones.

Wow... so you get a 100 dollar rebate and your STILL not happy? are you for real? Wow... just... wow.

I bought my powerbook and then a month later they released the macbook pro... did I cry? NO!

Those of you who are STILL whinning after getting 100 dollars back are offically lame!

So Steve is (effectively) throwing in a free AppleCare plan for my iPhone (since they didn't have them in stock when I bought it and the credit he is offering will easily cover it).

Not that I was bent out of shape by the price drop to begin, but I'm not going to look a gift plan in the mouth, either.

Obviously, I went too fast. Let me try again at a lower grade level.

I am more concerned because when I called Apple to ask how this will affect Applecare for my phone, they put me on hold to find out. The Apple reps should have already known the answer.

I do not care that Apple has discontinued my phone. I didn't buy it so people could "oohh and ahh" over it. It still does everything that I want it to do.

I bought it because I have never owned a cell phone, but I knew that Apple would make the one that does everything I would want and do it with style. Mission Accomplished.

I am excited about my phone being dropped because I have Applecare & based on what I have seen with my first iPhone, I suspect that Applecare will last longer than the phone will. This means that when it dies, I will get a much better iPhone at no additional cost.

What the "that's technology" means is that there will be no Apple product under the tree for friends and relatives this Xmas. I also believe that a lot of people will be throwing that comment in Apple's face every 90 days and expecting price drops every time components drop in price.

I believe that I will not be the only one who looks at Apple with a jaundiced eye when they release a new product. I feel very confident that every early adopter will remember this and act accordingly.

If a customer has a perception that they have been cheated, then rightly or wrongly it will change their preception of the company. Whether or not you agree with that is irrelevent.

Apple can change their prices however they want. And I can adjust my buying schedule accordingly.

As far as affecting their bottom line, I know I won't be buying anything from Apple until after Xmas.

I wonder if Apple dropped the price ATT pays for their iPhones? Hmm......

Well, I hope this makes my 4gb more of a collectors edition now, as it was only out for 2 months

:apple:the possible new iphone model with 16GB for $ 599.99.

Nah $499. In 6 weeks time when Leopard comes out (revealing a host of Leopard related features on the iPhone at the same time, you know ToDos etc).

edit:

Might not even be that long. Engadget thinks it might launch at Paris (along with a 3G version for the UK/EU).

No 3G in Europe I'd hazard to guess. Going on the O2 EDGE upgrade in the UK and the fact that 3G still has relatively low coverage (in the UK at least).

I admit to not being up to speed on UK/EU cellphone standards, so whatever is "latest and greatest" will likely be used. :)

The point is, Apple is using far from the latest and greatest. EDGE is almost 2Gs behind stuff like HSDPA and HSUPA.

However, in the uk at least, the networks are 3G'd up as much as they should be. The coverage outside cities is patchy.

Fair enough. :)

A friend of mine bought the 8 geg iPhone on the 2nd of September from Pentagon City Apple store using CC, and he has left the states for the time being. Is it possible to call Apple and have the 200$ added back to his CC? In that case does one need to provide CC details over the phone or is providing the purchase receipt details enough?

I guess the main question is, can one get a refund done over the phone, even though the purchase was done at an apple retail store? I assume it is possible since apple should already have info regarding the purchase and we still have the receipt.

You realize, that Apple will probably replace your iPhone with a 4G model when you "accidentally" drop your cell phone.
