After only three months, they're dropping the price by $200? And deleting the 4GB iPhone?

I know there's a "bleeding edge" penalty, but jesus. There's a lot of pissed-off iPhone owners right now. I'm sure.

They were a bit more greedy than they should have been. All along I and others said it was overpriced by 100 to 150 depending on who you asked.

I am glad and surpiced that Apple went with a 200 drop for the 8 gig and 200 for the left over 4Gig version

I think it's pretty hilarious when people on here talk about themselves being Apple's "most loyal customers" or "die-hard" in one breath and in another breath talk about never getting another apple product again and rant on about how bad Apple is for dropping the price so quickly. Talk about cognitive dissonance.
no, fans are customers too, its not like fanboy tax is a good thing. being fan of apple doesn't mean they should take any damage done by apple.

price drop over time is a ridiculous excuse, if apple can sell this thing now for $399, there is no reason they have to sell it for $599 two months ago. Flash drive is getting cheaper, but not THAT FAST!

I applaud apple of selling it for $399 now, but I disgust apple for selling it for $599 two months ago.

That has a nice ring to it.

Where did you see/read this? Reference please.

I'm in the midst of searching but most likely from rumor and news sites.

It certainly would have been a lot more honest for Jobs to say that they were expecting to aggresively reduce the high cost instead of reducing year after year. Perhaps that is just me who doesn't hear "a rapid a significant price drop in just a few short months" when Job's says "reduce the price year after year."

(5 minute mark)

-On a side note I am completely happy with what I purchased; however, I will now more patiently wait for Rev. 2. And it was the idea that I had a long time to wait for a price drop, 3G, or GPS that made me get it right away. MacRumors is going to have a great time figuring out the cycles for their buying guide if this becomes a trend.

People are seriously still crying about this?

I bought an 8 gig iphone on launch day and could really care less about the $200 price drop. If the $200 you think you are owed is really that big a deal to you, you probably shouldnt be buying $600 phones, or $400 dollar phones for that matter. It seems like what we have here is a bunch of people who bought a product that they really couldnt afford, but just had to have it anyway. Now they are complaining about issues that go hand in hand with buying overpriced luxury items. And for those complaining about the fact that your phone is now no longer a luxury item because it is now affordable to "everyone," you really need to work on your self esteem and realize that a material object doesnt make you better or more interesting to anyone besides yourself.

there is something in human natural, we can't dismiss it, you are not in that position, you don't know how many people out there working hard to get the thing. There are people out there who don't care the price, for whatever reason. I understand, But there are other people too.

But... but... buying an iPhone makes me cool! Now if the next guy can get it for that much less.... then it waters down how cool it makes me look! And now my friends are going to have the last laugh! That definitely doesn't make me look cool at all!

I just hope Apple doesn't keep the same price on the Touch for the next year because all the "loyal fans" don't like price drops

Thanks for the reference.

Here is what SJ said:

"I wish that we could sell it for $100 dollars today. We can't. It's a little more expensive than that. But as we bring the cost down, year over year and can appeal to more people, I don't see why everybody wouldn't want one of these."

That tells me that Apple will reduce prices when they can to be competitive. As they continuously reduce prices, they will appeal to more individuals over time. Their goal is to offer the iPhone for $100 dollars.

Nowhere did I hear where SJ stated that Apple will keep prices fixed for a year.

This is what happens with every new cell phone. That's why I waited three months...now I'm selling the Blackjack and getting an iPhone.

AMEX crediting if you bought on launch day!

If you purchased an iphone on launch day or after with an american express, they are issuing $200 credits to your account. They are also much nicer to deal with than att reps. Just call american express

My iPhone broke (unresponsive area of the multi-touch screen) this weekend, so I have to send it to Apple for repair tomorrow. I thought I'd include a little note with my package. It's purpose is for humor, and I don't expect a response, but here's what I wrote:

Dear AppleCare employee,

Thank you for your attention to my malfunctioning, 2 month old (and now obsolete) 4GB iPhone. It has been very good to me and was worth every penny that I scrounged up to be able to afford it. It’s sad to know that after such a short amount of time, Apple has corporately devalued my beloved iPhone by $200, but in my eyes, it’s priceless.

If, after slaving away over my precious device, you come to the realization that it just can’t be repaired, I would be willing to accept a brand new 8GB iPhone to replace it, despite the fact that it’s worth $100 less than what I paid for mine. It’s a sacrifice, but I will be flexible for the sake of my favorite brand, Apple.

Thank you kindly for your assistance.

:p

Still trying...

Bought two 8GB iPhones in the last two months--one mid-July from the 5th Ave store and another about two weeks ago as a refurb. I'm confident that I'll get a $150 refund for the refurb, but the original one I know will be a stretch. I called the 5th Ave store and they're not doing anything, and I've called Apple's 800 number oh, about 8 times. But, I never stay on hold for more than 5 minutes and then get disconnected. Over and over again.

Lovely.

Good one, I like that!

Rubbing salt into someone's wounds is generally not a good thing.
THat depends. Alot of people are arrogant and don't realise what they have, they're just looking out for their pockets ($$). I think ( as both yourself and I don't have an iPhone yet) we can sit back, and laugh at how annoyed people are getting, over something that doesn't really matter. Again, if it didn't happen, you wouldn't quibble or batter an eye lid, you got what you paid for.

I have heard VISA, Mastercard and Discover are all doing the same thing.

If you paid with a debit card ask your bank if they do the price protection. I called mine this morning and they do, so I figure others may as well.

EDIT: just read the news, good save Steve!!!

State of perpetual rage

Any company (that is not a monopoly) can make a product and charge what the price that they feel the market will pay. People with their own free will purchased the iPhone at $599. - which says "it is worth that price to me". I don't understand the logic of being mad if after you choose to buy the product the price is lowered. Is it jealousy? Do you not want other to pay a cheaper pice than you? Why are you mad?

You paid what you thought it was worth. Enjoy.

Looks like Apple has responded......
Kudos to Apple

hey we get $100 better then nothing. I can live with that.
Good to hear.

In my case, I am not laughing. Rather I am empathizing. Been there got the T-Shirt on many devices over the years. I don't think that it is in good taste to laugh at those who have made a decision which now causes them grief or consternation. But that's just me.

Anyhow, if I had purchased an iPhone for $600, I would merely look at myself in the mirror to see who's fault it was. I would probably beat myself up a bit for not having the patience to wait a while to purchase the iPhone.

And considering I almost purchased one for $1,300 a couple of weeks ago, that was activated but still could not use the phone system here in Japan, I would probably be a bit miffed at myself -- especially now with the iPod Touch.

With the new iPods, I need to re-evaluate what I want and may just go with the iPod Touch.
