So I take it the Air 2 is going to run like crap with iOS 10?
Depends on how badly Apple wants people to upgrade.
You realise that anyone who types a few lines of code, calls themselves a "developer" nowadays? LOL. Maybe you are, maybe you aren't - I don't care - and I don't mind how much you think you know, or how superior you feel your knowledge is to mine - I am okay with you knowing more than me IN ONE AREA ALONE (what do we have that we are not given? Each of us had nothing when we began to learn - we're equal in that sense), that may or may not be the case - meh - it's not a huge deal to me.

iOS development doesn't run on Java - the *syntax* of Swift may be more LIKE Java, but the compiled code is a thousand light years from it. ANYONE knows this, but clearly not you. Swift is to make coding easier, it doesn't change the underlying mechanisms. So you're a "developer" - so what - you can write code efficiently and elegantly OR poorly with a terrible grasp of the code (like me :p, hence I do not pretend to be one) but that doesn't mean you're the source of universal knowledge about how compilation and Java VMs work - I'll delegate this to more experienced members to comment on:

Anyone with more coding experience care to add to this?
I don't know why you happen to think Java is so awful, you haven't actually said anything that would lead me to believe this. Google does a lot of work on Java VM's and their current system is pretty damned fast. I've got many years of experience in both platforms. Each has their strengths and weaknesses. But I don't think iOS is any better, really. The memory constraints of making apps for iOS can be a bit of a pain to work wit
I shouldn't have to download an alternate launcher right out of the box. Plus TW is still there, running in the background, taking up resources. It still comes with all of the Samsung apps that if I don't like, I still have to have so now I have two calendars, two music players, two messaging apps, etc. Now the device is already loaded down with the apps I prefer, plus Samsung's apps. You don't have to worry with any of that in an iPhone. The default messaging, email, music player, calendar etc are all great.

Also with a Samsung, you have to deal with the carriers crap bloat ware in the US anyway.

A nexus device is much closer to an iPhone experience but it's still not as good.
I dont see why not. My sub-$300 Nexus 5X beats the iPhone in a lot of ways, which is pretty sad considering how much more expensive the iPhone is. The iPhone should really beat the nexus in EVERY categorh, not just a few.
No it's not. Not even close to its optimization and coherence. And the nexus 7 is a crap tablet.

More RAM running android means nothing.
All, not most but ALL, android phones aren't on par with iPhone. Not to sp ask about the iPad Pro using A9X.
Again the only comparable platform is Microsoft Surface.

Flawlessly. Absolutely.
There is nothing slow on my former iPhone 6 , nor in my son's iPad Air. Nothing.
Specs matter only in android world, where specs are supposed to take place of optimized software and resources.

Btw... Garbage iPad Pro ... Your hater's attitude is just demonstrating your agenda here.

As a software developer what you said about Java says me a lot about your knowledge.
Every single developer, real developer I mean, knows the difference.
Yeah....you're essentially sounding like an Apple commercial. It's kind of creepy really, in an Orwellian sense. Specs matter ONLY in the android world...? Yeah, that pretty much tells me everything I need to know about you. If you truly believe that Apple is so amazing that 'specs don't matter' then there's truly zero point in even talking with you because this is a religion to you.

Apple fanatics, and some android fanatics, have always creeped me out. It truly is a religion to them. But the Apple fanboy crowd does tend to be a lot more Jim Jones-like.

I haven't received it yet. Bought it on Staples.com to ensure that I'd get one before they sell out.

That's where I made my mistake with the Air 2. Staples had a $100 off sale, but they were sold out in my store. I didn't want to order it in case i needed to return it for screen defects so I went to Apple.
[doublepost=1458770356][/doublepost]I predict the Mods will soon close this thread.

I bought my Air 2 @ Staples.com when they had it at $100 off. The week after it went to $150 off. I emailed them and they adjusted the price on the spot. I too would be concerned about having to return it, but considering my experience with Staples.com and that we're 6+ months beyond the initial production run of the Pro, I'm pretty confident things will be fine.

You thinking Java is a good platform and not comprehending why a C-based language is vastly cleaner and more optimised (bare metal my friend, bare metal - I take it you understand that?), is what makes me suspect you don't know as much as you say you do. So what if you've worked on Java systems? I can unscrew a computer and replace modules, that doesn't mean I know how to optimise the software inside that system - I am not a software engineer any more than I am a famous chef, but almost anyone who knows about the BASICS of programming languages will tell you Java is a horrendous, ugly, messy language; that's almost written in stone my friend.

Ugh. Was hoping for better with the 9.7... :( I almost went for the iPad Pro when it launched, but I held back and said I'd wait until Air 3 came along. Now, I'm going to hold out on another release. Air 2 will be used until then.

I MIGHT just wait until I can get the 32GB for $499.

It also has the ram of the entry iphone and not the pro ipad. Like I said in another post, you are saying its a pro because you can spend more money. Not because the ipad itself Is like the ipad pro 12. Raising the price because you can spend money and buy more stuff is ridiculous. If the pen was included I would be more likely to agree.

Se parody

Regardless of the RAM the iPad Pro 9.7" does a heck of a lot that the iPhone SE doesn't. It also has a much better display and a better camera.

People like you are essentially parodies of critics because you point to a single feature you don't like. Given the current state of iOS apps, 2GB RAM isn't a big limitation. People using this to run iOS versions of Microsoft Office or drawing apps may well find this device to be Pro for them.

If I didn't know better, I'd think you work for or were paid by Apple to post here. You sound like a hater too and never give any non Apple idea or product any credit at all. Talk about agendas. And before you get all worked up over it, I am not trying to provoke you or insult you or whatever it is that you think when someone disagrees with you. Other people have valid viewpoints even though they aren't Applecentric like yours are. Just because you state your opinion doesn't make it a fact.

For me it's not about that it's about the value for the money. Since I don't care for the pencil or keyboard what's so compelling since it has the same RAM?

Just ignore him. There's nothing to be gained by arguing with people who believe in us vs them.

Sooo very true.

I've fought tooth and nail, concerning RAM, with this user over the years. Not a single apology, nor ever admitted I was correct, even when presented with youtube videos of the iPad Air refreshing with only Two tabs open in safari, and nothing else running on the device.

After reading his post here, I finally just put him on ignore - https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...th-have-2gb-ram.1962771/page-15#post-22704612

The price for the 32GB model. Lack of 4GB of RAM. The $600 price tag usually means I get something I want, and will be able to use it for a few years to come.

Dude....my job IS programming in C based languages. I know C, Objective-C, C++, Java, etc like the back of my hand.

You're acting as if iOS apps are 'bare to the metal' but this literally could NOT BE further from the truth. IOS apps are executed in their own walled-off environment which incurs it's own performance penalty. Also, most iOS apps these days are written in Swift, which is NOT A superset of C.

If anything, Java is way more syntactically similar to C than swift is.

The fact that I have written applications in both platforms and YOU have not should kind of tell you that your argument is wrong. The Java virtual machine email does incur a small performance penalty, but iOS incurs their own special penalties in different areas so it does even out. From a programming perspective, neither platform is really superior, except that a lot of programmers like Java better since it is WAYYYYYY more portable than swift or objective C.

I was not talking about the syntax of Swift, I am talking about the interpretation and underlying compiled object code, which, in Java, is far less efficient.

I bid you good night.

Well, yeah, the Air 1 is already struggling. But the question comes down to how long 2gb will last before it becomes a burden.
It doesnt take a genius to figure that one out.Air 2 already has heavy stutters on iOS 9.What do you think will iOS 10 do to it?

Yeah, I'm completely backpedaling and torn on which to choose. Less RAM, yes, but as others have pointed out, less pixels to drive than the larger display. Not sure if I'll be OK with the size of the 12.9, so the 9.7 almost feels like more of a value.

Got the pro today. Too big. Can live with the lesser ram. Going with the 9.7.

Actually, I've been reading how 9.X updates have slowly been making the Air 2 great. That says to me the problem was around them pushing changes to Metal that broke things in the initial update and then fixing that as time went on.

I'm not working for Apple and certainly I'm not paid by Apple. Quite on the contrary I paid Apple quite a lot of money over the last 26 years...
Other people having "valid viewpoints " doesn't come to an apple centric forum to basically insult Apple (and thus their customers) with terms like those used by the well known haters of the forum (just look at the user above my post still using words like "pathetic" to define Apple hardware).
I'm not posting on android central to give them my vision about android.
I actually have quite a few subscriptions on well known android centric (and window too!) forums where I'm an user and I don't worship Apple over there. Because I'm not a troll.

Am I an hater ? How ?
I don't particularly like android, for sure. I'm not posting on android centric forums to say that. I'm not even posting in the "android" section of this forum to say that.
I don't feel the need to enlighten all the android customers on how poor their choice is, like someone seems to want to do here with us "poor sheep".

You were proven wrong by at least 6 videos I posted showing you iPad Air NOT refreshing even with 4 tabs and two apps in background, but you just ignored them. I even used the websites you gave me.
You were the one that had to apologize.

I did that as well. I think it's a great deal

I am already likely going to return the 12.9. It is just way to big for common usage. The only time where it makes sense is if you are using it in a desk situation only. But even for sitting on the couch, I felt like it was too big. Ordered the 9.7 instead.

I go back and forth between my wife's Air 2 and my iPad Pro and I agree it is large. I am getting use to it so I am going to give it more time. I just love the larger screen!

Me too. I liked the iPad Pro for the Pencil and the keyboard but prefer the 9.7" size and am glad Apple offers a Pro product.

for the money they are charging this is pretty disappointing, especially when Samsung and others are now putting 4gb as a minimum into their phones and tablets
If Apple would put 4GB in iDevices, Samsung would choose 8GB as their minimum just to prove to the fools that they are better on specs. Go to a really bad restaurant in your neighborhood, the dishes are always twice as big as in the nearest good restaurant.

I've ordered a 128GB 9.7 with Smart Keyboard, case and AC+ to try but if I see any issues because of 2GB that could have been fixed with 4GB RAM then everything is going back and I'll pick up Air 2.
For the price I won't be accepting anything less. I do love my iPads but there's no excuse if they've gone for 2GB for profit over performance.
I'm willing to give them nearly £1000 of money I've worked hard for so I'll not trade my money for something that shouldn't have left the factory.
Looking at the difference between the larger and smaller iPad Pro logic boards, it's obvious that they didn't have the room for the bigger 4GB chips without a total redesign but I hope I'm wrong.
