the rep. i talked to didn't even know what the press release was. he put me on hold to come back with *NEW# and offered to try and 'secure an early upgrade of 499'. dude sounded like he was high as a kite.

i'll call back later, i guess. those who were successful, please let me know what you said, ty.

Asked the rep how much it would cost me to upgrade given the new requirements (as of yesterday I was December eligible and spend 90 per month on my bill) final answer is I am eligible as of tomorrow to get the new iphone for the 199/299 price tag. I took the rep's name down and what city he works in in case at&t gives me trouble tomorrow. I am slightly excited but will be pumped if this is true and I can buy one tomorrow!

Just upped my plan to hopefully be over the golden 99+ mark monthly. In the system now, let's see what happens, though hopefully they view pre- not-post firm discount, as I am at 48.59 for minutes, 30 for data and 20 for text or 98.59, though true cost is 59.99+30+20. If not, already bought iPhone 3GS, so just have to sell 3G to recoup cash.

Well-- good luck with that-- I was told by both a manager and supervisor that the 99.00 is calculated by Minutes price and data only.

I.e. you would have to spend at least 69.00 + 30.00 to be eligible. They do not count extras likes texting or early nights and weekends.

Thanks, will see, if wrong will shift plan, but seems no two people at ATT give the same answer or interpret the policy the same way

Update: went to att store. he said he has no idea until tomorrow, but it is NOT case by case, but only done through the system. i mentioned people online calling AT&T and getting that result - he said it's very unlikely and a result of misreading the press release. he also said you had to buy in June, July, or August, and have a plan of $99+. that's a plan, not a bill. my bill is almost $99, but my plan is $80 (data, unlimited text, voice). i think i remain screwed.

I'm gonna be really annoyed if I can't get the upgrade at the lower price when so many others are. My phone bill is still over 100/month regardless of before taxes or not.

I don't want to be yelled at, I know the whole schpeel on getting it cheaper on the on set....but it really sucks if they make exceptions but not for everyone. I bought my 3G on launch. Therefore I should be able to get the lower price.

Xerenthar my only suggestion is do like I am doing. I am writing an email to the upper heads that I have in draft mode until I see what I look like tomorrow.

I have also saved the PDF from the press release as the press release is NOT specific in terms of what a monthly service charge is.

I mean if you ask me--- I can tell you all of my monthly service charges are those that I have to pay for each month and are reoccurring (i.e. text, data, nights and weekends, etc).

Technically they could argue that the MRC are those that are bound by the contract, but I can drop the data if I used a different phone, I can change my phone minutes to a lower amount, just like I can drop the other items. So honestly-- it is nonsensical.

I agree---

Honestly Ashely I never considered buying the new phone UNTIL their press release because of the contract.

However-- they changed their rules. So now-- I feel like-- hey I have had mine since launch (and the one before that) and I do pay in monthly bills over 100.00 before taxes.

Also even if I look at my bill historys in the summary--- there is a section called Monthly Service Charges--- and by default they include ALL of the monthly service charges not the cherry picking that they are talking about at the store or on the phone (ie just the plan). Other Charges show the misc charges like overages, etc.

You people are LUCKY.. I have never had a bill under $200, I also have 4 lines, 2 of which are iPhones, 2100 mins, and unlimited text. My last bill b/c I added a line was $345

To be fair, nobody has gotten anything yet. It's possible people promised things by people who don't know what's going on. When the system is updated, everyone will know.

I thought I saw it was $99 per line, so you're actually under!

My bill averages over $200 and I got a reply back I can upgrade July 18th.

Thats fine with me. My developer has a bill in the $180's and was told to go pound sand.

I emailed my AT&T rep asking her to work out something, we spend a ton of money with AT&T and I send them a ton of business too, usually 2 accounts a week for DSL.

I just read a bit more, my plan is way over $99.

Did you talk to them in store or at CS?

If this is the case I'll give up now lol, I have about 5000 rollover minutes on my 550min a month shared family plan, we don't use any minutes at all.

@$50 + $30 data + $20 Unlimited Txt, I could put my iphone line over $100, it's pointless for me to increase my minute plan since I don't use the phone, only way I can reasonably up the bill is with the txt plan.

Someone help me understand all of this. The two people that I know that have iPhones got and email yesterday from Apple saying they were getting 200.00 back on their upgrade... me no email.

I purchased my iPhone 2G on launch day as a new customer, paid 599.00 for it. Got the upgrade to 3G last year on launch week.

What is this "if you spend more you get your upgrade earlier stuff? Where is that documented?

That talks about the more you spend scenarios - http://www.wirefly.com/upgrades/eligibility/att/

This thread has a LOT of good information and talks about it also - https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/715112/

I spoke with an ATT rep yesterday. Another who had NO clue about the press release. I mean seriously, is it THAT hard to figure that if your company puts out a press release the actual phone reps are trained on it? Literally had NO clue what I was talking about...

Regardless she claimed I'm not eligible period. She didn't seem to even be aware that some 3G launch day purchasers would be eligible and some wouldn't. She said they may be getting the info that they are but it probably would get waived when they went to purchase because it's "impossible to move an upgrade eligibility date." Which is a load of DUNG in my opinion.

Anyways--that's my rant. I was very cold on the idea of the 3Gs to begin with because it's so similar to my phone. But after all this hoopla I'm just done. It's not worth the effort because the upgrade is so uninspiring. I'll be good with 3.0 until next June/July. Hope to all goodness they move exclusivity. I'm so freaking sick of ATT. I miss Verizon. The minute I asked about something they'd bend over backwards to assist AND I was offered early upgrades A TON for being a loyal customer.

What's your status December peeps? Any luck today? What happened?
Did you get the cheap price despite *639# and OLAM page saying December?

Has anyone had any luck?
I have a family plan with 3 lines my total bill before tax is well over $200. When I called in to check my upgrade today the rep told me that my line was not eligible and I would have to pay $499 to upgrade to the 32 gb. I went online to check my date and it says 03/16/10. I purchase my iPhone on the 7/11 but cause of back order didn't receive it til 7/14 and it was an additional line to the account. My eligible date nor the price I have to pay seems to make sense so after work I'm going into a store to find out.

In order to take advantage of the upgrade concession they are giving, you have to average $99 MRC per line on your account before taxes.

Using my example:

My line
$60 minutes
$30 data
$30 family messaging

$120 total

Wife's line
$9.99 minutes
$30 data

$39.99 total

159.99/2 = 79.99

So if you have 3 lines, you need to have $297 in MRC to be eligible 12-15 months into the contract.

Good luck calling, I have an upgrade in July and didn't receive the bump to today for the new iPhone 3GS even though I met every qualification. It was like pulling teeth this morning to get the 199 price but I finally did. If my struggle was any indication i think getting your upgrade bumped from December to July is going to be just as challenging. But it defiantly wont change if you dont call, word of advice. 1 out of 10 of the ATT reps I spoke to yesterday understood the
00-69$/mnth = 21 months upgrade
69-99$/mnth = 18 months upgrade
> 99$/mnth = 12 months upgrade

ok.. i have called 5 times and emailed them. they are saying you must meet 3 critierias before you can be upgrade eligible after 12 months into your contract

1. account in good standing
2. no late payments
3. you must pay 99.99 before taxes a month

this is a crock of **** to me... i pay 98-99 a month after taxes... they say i can upgrade to any other phone but the iphone... only if i had one more feature added to my account i could have upgraded. people who just signed there contract 12 months ago upgrade before me who have had att for 5 years. they say they cannot do anything because they have strict policies about the upgrade... and they make it sound like paying 200 bucks for a 199 phone is a good deal... no way

Did you need to meet that criteria for that entire 12 month period? Or can I just bump my plan today by the $10 I need to and then tomorrow or the next billing cycle all of the sudden I'll be eligible for an upgrade?
