In order to take advantage of the upgrade concession they are giving, you have to average $99 MRC per line on your account before taxes.

Using my example:

My line
$60 minutes
$30 data
$30 family messaging

$120 total

Wife's line
$9.99 minutes
$30 data

$39.99 total

159.99/2 = 79.99

So if you have 3 lines, you need to have $297 in MRC to be eligible 12-15 months into the contract.

my plan for 3 lines

total before tax 240

the primry line is the a blackberry that was upgraded 06/02/08 and is the only one eligible for the upgrade at the full discount price.

This all looks like simple math from AT&Ts perspective. They want as much profit out of their earlier subsidized phones as possible. This has the effect of:
- making us not very happy, having to wait another six months to upgrade at the upgrade price
- making Apple not very happy because of lost sales.

I'd say, AT&T will manage this to get as high of sales as possible. They're figuring that some of us will be weak and spend the extra @200 for a phone without waiting for their new contract. Tiered pricing is a way to extract more cash out of the marketplace. If they (or apple) are not meeting their sales goals, they'll cave. Given the economy, and the comparison to the 3G, I can wait.

I've got a feeling Apple is just waiting for the day they can end their relationship with AT&T. TMobile should have their 3G network fully rolled out by then.

Did you need to meet that criteria for that entire 12 month period? Or can I just bump my plan today by the $10 I need to and then tomorrow or the next billing cycle all of the sudden I'll be eligible for an upgrade?
No, the MRC is a 3 month rolling average. Again the MRC is calculated on a per line basis and only includes the voice rate plan + selected data features.

In the case of a FamilyTalk rate plan it is only on the voice plan for the primary line, so if you have the $69 FamilyTalk plan, only $60 is for the primary line. The remaining $9.99 is for the secondary line.

Again, the press release is only going to help if you already have a July, August or Sept upgrade date.

Not true. I had a dec eligibilty date bought my phone 4 days after launch 2008 (3G). Called AT&T 2 days ago and was confirmed that i was in fact eligble and had a note added to my account describing the situation. Went down to the apple store where I reserved my 32GB Black iPhone and stood in line from 6:25-7:00 when the store opened. Concierge came and helped me out and began the process of getting the phone. Well it turns out I wasn't eligible on their records. We called AT&T. Apple store manager spoke with AT&T rep and told her I was eligible. Then we continued the process of getting the phone for $299 then the rep comes back on the phone and says I actually don't qualify because my bill is $89.99 before taxes. Well because I was told by 2 AT&T reps the day before that I was eligible the apple manager and the AT&T rep made it possible for me to get the phone for $299 for the misinformation and because I waited in line like I was told I could do.

Ya i love my new 32GB iPhone 3G S. Wonder if anyone else got lucky like me?

Lucky you. "I" waited in line today fully expecting to pay the $299/$399. Buying the phone - it shows I'm not eligible for ANYthing. $600/$700!
Get on the phone with AT&T - they insist all over the place I'm not eligible for anything. ATT supervisor says same. Reason? Because a year ago, my online payments went to the wrong AT&T address. I only found out when my line was cut for TWO HOURS which I paid over the phone and rectified the situation. So because of that innocent snafu, the ONLY option is to wait several months or pay the $600/700.

Apple store said they never seen anything like that to date. I stopped at AT&T on the way home - they were flabberghasted and said they never heard/seen this ever. They were stunned that just because I had an issue for TWO HOURS a year ago - they'd require me to pay an extra $400.

All reps including the one we talked to today insisted I was eligible for the $199/$299 IF I didn't have that red flag on the account. AT&T store says that's overkill for that one event. They are going to call me.
At this point, I might be better off paying the EXTRA EXTRA $200 to avoid another 2 year contract from hell. IDK

I hate AT&T SO much. It'll be a glorious day when they lose their Apple exclusivity.

Anyone have to pay $600/$700? I bet not.

Lucky or the norm? I have a family plan. Main line is eligible 12/09, 2nd line 3/19 (I bought both 3G on release day last year).

I went in to ATT, rep said I was not eligible for the discounted pricing (199/299), but I was eligible for the "exception upgrade???" (399/499). I said ok, I'll take it. She said she had to confirm with manager, he came over and said NO, he's eligible for the full upgrade. He went on to ask when we bought our iphones, I said 7/11/08. he said we have a new policy that early adopters get the full discount.

Needless to say, I locked in my discounted price of $299 for 32GB 3GS. I bought my wife the upgrade as well since it was "only" $299.

FYI, my family plan is the 550 anytime minutes for about $50/month (plus 2 iphone data plans, and txt messaging, total to about $120/month).

I did end up purchasing a 3G S--- and AT&T met me halfway due to the errors that they had done when I added the second line last year.

Basically, I still had to purchase the 32GB for $499, BUT I received a service credit for a full service of my bill.

So basically I ended up paying $50.00 more than the $299.

I thought it was a reasonable outcome and I was appreciative.
