As suggested in a report yesterday, Google has announced Google TV, a new offering set to roll out in the fall of this year designed to integrate the television and Web experience.
Google TV is a new experience for television that combines the TV that you already know with the freedom and power of the Internet. With Google Chrome built in, you can access all of your favorite websites and easily move between television and the web. This opens up your TV from a few hundred channels to millions of channels of entertainment across TV and the web. Your television is also no longer confined to showing just video. With the entire Internet in your living room, your TV becomes more than a TV -- it can be a photo slideshow viewer, a gaming console, a music player and much more.
Built on Chrome and Android, Google is opening up the Google TV platform to developers to allow them to create new applications. In addition, existing Android applications not requiring phone capabilities will be able to run directly on the Google TV platform.

From a hardware perspective, Google has partnered with Intel, which is providing its Atom processor to power the Google TV offerings. Google TV will initially be offered as a standalone box from Logitech, as well as integrated directly into Sony TVs and Blu-ray players. Google has also partnered with Best Buy for distribution and with DISH Network to provide one-click integration between Google TV and the satellite provider's DVR offerings.

Google TV has been seen as a significant competitor to Apple's set-top box known as Apple TV. Apple has long regarded Apple TV as a "hobby", offering a somewhat limited feature set serving as a hub for music, video, and photo content, as well as access to the company's iTunes Store.

Based on what I've seen so far, I have no interest in Google TV.

BUT...if it kicks Apple in the butt and makes them do something with the AppleTV then I'm happy it's here.

I can write a long, long list of complaints about the AppleTV and yet I still adore mine. Can you imagine how much I'd love it if they put even a little bit more effort into it? Hopefully this is the first step towards that happening.

Personally, I don't want to have a keyboard and mouse hooked up to my TV. I know there are those that like that (the mac mini TV crowd comes to mind), but it isn't for me. However, I hope that Google's push for this will encourage Apple to make the AppleTV better.

P-Worm

SONY and Adobe are on board now.

I don't know if it will be any good, The trend in TV industry is 3D now, is web content on TV really that attractive now? Not sure.

As an Apple stocks holder Im very happy of Google stupidity of announcing everz of their products MONTHS in advance giving Apple enough time to react. But this is not the only thing I like about Google. The other things are for example that most things they do fail, while most things Apple does do not. Compare Googles (much higher) stock price with apple's I think it will soon be reveresed with Apple essentially havong Google stock price and vica versa.

Your move Apple.

There's a multi-billion dollar apps and advertising market at stake here.

btw. about time the television industry got a kick up the backside. Sky and Virgin/NTL have been taking the mick for years (I mean how clunky are those EPGs? Like teletext from the 70s). (apologies for UK-centric view).

btw2. it'll be the iPhone/iPad platform they use for this.

Not Likely

Yea right.

I'm still trying to get them to setup my Goole Voice account so I can use it on my Droid. They say their not accepting any new users.... WTF!!

Apple better get their act together and finally give us a real update to the Apple TV. Were going on almost four years now with no hardware changes.

As for software, which it has matured nicely, Apple needs to adopt the iPhone OS. App integration is the key to the future, as is a SDK.

What's new about this?

How is this any different than all the other devices out there? I've got a MacMini attached to my TV, as well as a Roku box on an other TV. With Boxee, Apple TV, and other Set-tops, what is Google's angle here? I don't see an advantage.

Enjoy your apple stock, and mindless flaming words really don't mean much in a serious discussion.

I was interested in this until I saw:

Google's not sharing hardware specs, but we're told Google TV devices will have WiFi, HDMI, the Intel CE4100 processor, and... some will have an IR blaster to tune your cable or satellite box, which is just sad. (Like, 1997 sad.)

Which tells me that making your cable provider's content work nicely with any other device is going to remain an enormous/ugly pain in the ass just like it is now. Otherwise you're stuck with content on the web or flash-based players. I guess it's not google's fault, but that of the cable providers; it still, however, keeps this device from being anything really new.

So if this is being built into new Sony TV's and Blu-Ray players, is it possible that it will find it's way to the PS3 via some firmware update?

I'd like to interject here that the only TV partner Google has is DirectTV.
Two days ago Comcast ( much larger audience ) demonstrated their new TV app for the iPad. It lets you control the box from the iPad.

Apple could have done this some time ago, only if they continued developing their hobby platform. Oh well, there is always someone else vying for our dollars.

Hmm I suspect there's a new version of AppleTV using the iPhoneOS in the works.. as long as they can run 1080p content via HDMI then they have an apps delivery mechanism, a system for streaming video/movie content already in place and they can easily make it work..

All about content at the end of the day..

all apple really needs to do is make iphone/ipad apps available on apple TV and it's game over.. you'll already have a multi-touch controller! ;) I think this really would scare the hell out of nintendo, sony, microsoft, and google!
