Agreed

Wow, sounds like they really played down to the "competition" (AppleTV).

Demo was... Sigh a demo. I don't see any advantages here...

For me individually if I want to watch something specific, I do an iTunes search buy or rent and call it good, I don't just spend hours at you tube, and if I want the net, I grab my 'pad.

Well my $$$ will keep heading to Cupertino.

Those of you that are excited good for you, for me, my needs are met at the moment.

As an Apple stocks holder Im very happy of Google stupidity of announcing everz of their products MONTHS in advance giving Apple enough time to react. But this is not the only thing I like about Google. The other things are for example that most things they do fail, while most things Apple does do not. Compare Googles (much higher) stock price with apple's I think it will soon be reveresed with Apple essentially havong Google stock price and vica versa.

glad to see you don't let emotion decide with whom to invest

Hmm I suspect there's a new version of AppleTV using the iPhoneOS in the works.. as long as they can run 1080p content via HDMI then they have an apps delivery mechanism, a system for streaming video/movie content already in place and they can easily make it work..

All about content at the end of the day..

I think we agree (see my btw2).

Apple has much more of the delivery mechanism/agreements in place with content providers. They still have a head start.

This will be very interesting to watch over the next 6 months.

Hi! I'd like you to meet my Big Brother "G"... he's lives in Mountain View... but manages to keep track of everything thing I do... watch, plant in my garden, call on the phone, email...

I'm excited about this, even though this isn't a great implementation

Computer makers have been trying for years to get into TVs. Other vendors have been tepidly trying to add set-top box type functionality. Yet even other vendors have built crap solutions (Microsoft media center).

I'm glad this is happening. I agree with the premise of the video "if the TV is so fun to watch, and the internet is so smart, why must we choose"? It's about time the darned things got combined.

I don't think this implementation will do it, because Google just isn't a consumer friendly enough company. But I'm glad to see more people getting into this space, because as the kinks get worked out, if there is enough volume, Apple will finally do it "right", and then the other guys will then follow that and make it better.

In 2006 smartphones had been around for a long time, many used them in the corporate space, but they all kind of sucked for a user experience. Apple came in and re-invented it, and now smartphones are looking really good. Here's hoping the same happens in the "smart TV" space.

I suspect that Google has just announced what we'll be seeing in the next Apple TV. If the next Apple TV isn't running iPhone OS, with apps that can be controlled with your iPhone/iPad/Touch then Google deserves to take this niche market away from them. Hopefully WWDC will shed some light on Apple'splans for it. :)

....too far?

(i'm FULLY kidding).

Google is all about quantity over quality. Maybe this sticks to the wall, maybe not. Google doesn't care because they have a few dozen other projects to throw money at. Google Wave anybody?

I hope it inspires Apple to finally UPDATE the Apple TV. In any case, I really don't want google integrated into my TV. I don't want them streaming ads to it, collecting all the data they possibly can on my viewing habits, etc. Although it's probably inevitable someday.

Sweet! Another box and remote to add to the living room. There is no way this could make things more complicated for the wife.

My Roku box and my TiVo box do everything that I need them to do, including scheduling my TiVo over the web. I have no need nor desire for a Google TV.

Sony

Since Sony is a partner, they could help Google get their "foot in the door" by adding a Google TV client to the PS3... and hopefully replacing the woefully bad browser with Chrome! :D

good luck google. Not Apple nor Microsoft nor Sony nor Netflix have made it very far in this arena, yet everyone knows it's the future. It only takes one to make the break-thru!

I would like to see more updates to the AppleTV as well. These include:

1. A way to dl the restore os in case the hard drive fails or you want to upgrade the size.

2. Since you can now type easily using the iPhone/Touch, it would be nice to insert a browser. I know it can be done with a patch stick. But it would be nice if it worked out of the box. This is request most guests see as a missing feature of the box when they come over to watch a flick.

3. A faster chip. And continue with a no fan design. I enjoy the silence of this thing.

An increase in the amount of FREE entertainment available to me and my family? If the buy-in price is right, I'm all for it.

Demo issues aside (that's what you get for using wireless keyboards in a room full of cellphones), I was very impressed with GoogleTV. I thought it looked great and is certainly way more functional than an AppleTV out of the box.

I love Google for standing up to competitors in all different aspects of the technology sector. Most companies wouldn't dare take the risks that Google does. Google and Apple constantly challenging each other ultimately results in a richer consumer experience.

Yes, Microsoft failed with WebTV, but this is Google. In order to be successful, you have to take risks, and Google is the perfect example. Yes, many of their products and offerings haven't succeeded, but that didn't stop them from continuing to try. I foresee Google winning the technology race in the end. Whether it be in phones, mobile OS, or random projects (such as Google TV), Google will triumph in the end.

I'm not hating on Apple at all, just speculating. :)

Go :apple: Go Google!

This is a really difficult time for those of us who are hardcore Apple fans, or hardcore Google fans.

I mean, I love Google — but I love Apple more. And I like that Google is creating products and ideas that might help push Apple to do bigger and better things. But ultimately, I want Apple to win the fight, because I have greater respect for them as a company.

I think Apple's products are better than anything else out there on the market. But Google has some cool stuff, you know? (Or in the very least, cool ideas.) I wish that Google could come up these cool ideas, and then have Apple design them — the product, the UI, etc. Maybe that's what competition is all about, but when these two media giants are fighting each other, it's hard to know who to root for.

I mean, really now — can't we all just get along?

This is hilarious.
1. Hardware made by Google, no wait, Logitech.
2. A cartoon demo. No actual product.
3. And wait...

With the entire Internet in your living room, your TV becomes more than a TV -- it can be a photo slideshow viewer, a gaming console, a music player and much more.

My TV already does all that. Thanks but future fail.

Hopefully Apple will see the opportunities and do :apple: TV right. If they were to move it towards iPad integration and/or BT keyboard w/touchpad and add Tivo-like functionality, it would be "game over" for all competitors. I know it might cannibalize their iTunes Store TV sales, but that could be answered with a cheaper subscription model than Tivo. Hell, Apple could just buy Tivo and roll it all together.

As much as Steve has said in the past about no one wants their computer merged with their TV, much has changed since then and people use and access the internet for the daily lives, we interface with those web assets in various ways and the "living room" is the one of the last frontiers waiting to be done right.
*edit: holy run-on sentence! ;)

imho :)
