As an Apple stocks holder Im very happy of Google stupidity of announcing everz of their products MONTHS in advance giving Apple enough time to react. But this is not the only thing I like about Google. The other things are for example that most things they do fail, while most things Apple does do not. Compare Googles (much higher) stock price with apple's I think it will soon be reveresed with Apple essentially havong Google stock price and vica versa.

My bet is on Google. Over the last couple of years they have become smarter and faster than Apple. Google TV, Android, Could-based iTunes competitor...Whoa! Apple is seriously getting some competition now.

Have you tried iTunes lately? What giant bloated, buggy piece of poo! Good thing Apple abandoning it's core market too (Notebooks, Desktops)

nice, if I can watch Hulu and stream movie files to this "Google TV Box" then it's time to ditch the Mac Mini :)

There are quite a few of us here at MR who use our Mini's as HTPC's. Being one of them, I'm very excited with what this will do for internet video, especially in the quality department. Much of the video that is on the web is of poor quality on an HDTV, but something mainstream like this should really help to push higher quality video standards. I certainly don't mind waiting a few minutes to buffer content if the quality is better.

Right now I use Plex and as far as I'm concerned, this is the standard for how internet, TV and computer use should cross paths. They are working on a .9 version that will continue the evolution. As excited I am that Google has jumped on this bandwagon, there's no way I'll switch anytime soon.

Sweet millions of channels. Google TV will provide us with millions of channels.

And if I view 10 new channels per day for 600 years I will have clicked through roughly 2 million channels aka millions of channels.

Just what we needed.

First thing that came to my mind as well was "maybe Apple will stop ignoring the Apple TV now" ... I love my Apple TV even with it being crippled and still a few quirks/bugs. If they fix it and add more features, and especially allowed apps to be played through it, boy, that would kill any competitor. Wishful thinking maybe, but I just hope Apple is paying attention.

It's about time

Google unveil a logo that doesn't look like a guy in IT concocted it in Microsoft Publisher.

I like the concepts, and I like the way things are trending.

I am looking to buy a small TV to mount on the wall of my kitchen. Ideally it has access to YouTube and a web browser built in so I can check out my favourite cooking videos and websites. I also have photos, videos, and music stored on a NAS, and it would be great if I could access all of those too.

Samsung and Sony both make a number of models that look like they'll fit the bill without needing any extra hardware. Of course I could also stick an Apple TV, WD TV Live, Asus O!Play, etc. under there somewhere too.

I honestly do not understand all the criticism that comes from these mindless Jobs worshipers. Google is trying to provide more content to TVs, what is so wrong about that? I am quite sure that if Apple had done this everyone would be calling the devise revolutionary.

Give me a break please, try to forget about branding for just one second and see the bigger picture. I certainly would not complain if my next TV came with internet functionalities built-in. I hope more companies follow this trend so maybe in the near future all televisions will have wi-fi capabilities (regardless of which company is providing this service).

Accessibility & Devices

What strikes me as positive in all of this is innovation. What scares me is how easy google just does what it wants, mind your being successful is another thing.

I would however like to point out that in a world filled with devices google's keynote provides a more realistic view of easy all our devices can work together. Apple has always been that leader but they've got to pick it up. Competition is good and will lead to better products for all of sue end consumers.

Being a apple fan boy I hope that Jobs and crew are the winners in this, if there is even a case of winning.

I vote for Google to improve their subpar/ugly products BEFORE they move on to new areas of the market. It's like they're playing risk, trying to conquer every market of the web.

They all need improvement.

"Your TV can be a photo slideshow viewer, a gaming console, a music player and much more."

Wow view photos on my TV. Oooh. PLay games on it? PLay music through it?

I had never even thought I could do those things on my TV before.

Sound like an iPad. ;)
And a nice mount.

Since when is a Cartoon Considered a Demo?

For a service that is to launch this Fall that includes hardware it is a pretty pathetic way to announce it. I think someone in Google just produced a cartoon so they could test market the concept to see if there was any interest out there. Other than a few thousand to produce a cartoon and a few letters between TV manufacturers saying they are open to using their names in an announcement, what has Google actually done?

This really shows the difference in commitment between Apple and Google. AppleTV may not be big yet, but at least Apple has the guts to test the concept out with a working hardware device and functioning service.

iPhone OS??

to all guys suggesting iPhone OS for a future apple tv reincarnation:
iPhone OS is all about touch! well, you might say, android os is touch based as well. i think that displaying touch optimized apps on a tv screen is just ridiculous. of course, there comes a new sdk, let's see what interaction paradigms it carries.
apple, on the other hand, i guess had even hard feelings about running iPhone apps on iPad, although it's both touch based. they would never come out which such a half baked solution.

running a browser on a tv though surprisingly convinced me, thinking of the new html5 capabilities. maybe apple's going to implement that.

one last thought: why the hell is google sleeping with flash lately?? just apple slapping?

TV is a mostly passive experience. Computer, iPod Touch, and iPad is a mostly interactive experience.

Once there is an SDK for Apple TV 2 someone will come up with a 4 window application possibly reminiscent of Spaces, where you are watching a Seinfeld rerun and at the "commercial break" you switch over to the latest news on CNBC or Bloomberg, pausing Seinfeld, and maintaining a web window of the information you are watching on Bloomberg.

Then when you rekey your attention to Seinfeld and finish that off, you pull up a DVR type file of The West Wing, or Playboy Channel, or Joe's home Internet Channel #2563.

Most people never turn off their computers or phones, so you will never turn off your TV because it is also your display for incoming email and VoIP calls and Videocalls. The SDK will need to support a "dark mode" of display for after hours uses. Maybe turn off the iSight during those times, :D

Rocketman

I'm not Apple's biggest fan but if I was in the market for a set-top box - I'd opt for an AppleTV. My internet connection is terrible so I couldn't imagine streaming 576p over it. Whereas my iTunes video library is 200gb and full of my fave shows, I'm also happy with the way TV is with its schedules and air times.

So the specs say that it'll have an IR Blaster to control your cable box. That sounds rather clunky. So you'd have this Google interface on top of your existing Tivo or provider's DVR interface? Reminds me of my very first Sony Tivo.

I think this is awesome for Web-Only TV viewing - if you don't want to have cable/satellite service just use this to get content from hulu, youtube, unless hulu tries to shut them out.

Seriously, if we all stop using Google, will they get off their asses and actually update their crappy search engine.

I hope this brings some serious competition for the apple tv

my thoughts exactly - open up the AppleTV to some new opportunities...

I love all of my AppleTVs but primarily run Boxee on them for network content and not the AppleTV OS. We'll see what the future of internet TV holds...

What makes it bloated?
