iPhone 4 pre-orders kicked off today and have been causing trouble for Apple's online ordering system which has been up and down throughout the morning. In fact, we are still receiving reports of U.S. customers being unable to fulfill the order forms online.

In Japan, reports indicate that many physically lined up throughout the country just to get on the wait list. Softbank also found their servers struggling to keep up with demand while hundreds stood in line:
Softbank spokesman Furuya Katsuhide said that the better-than-expected demand had stressed the company's systems, which slowed both its website and the reservation process at stores.
Businessinsider also notes lines forming at AT&T stores in the U.S.

My order won't go through on Apple's site. I get to the point where I put in my current cell number and it attempts to verify with AT&T. I get a msg returned that it's unable to process at this time.

Very frustrating!

I ordered the upgrade for my wife's first gen iPhone this morning through the AT&T web site. I also tried to upgrade my "work" iPhone which is a different account and that fails on the AT&T web site. So, I am batting .500 on this one.

Stayed up until 4AM last night, tried for about an hour and a half.
Got to the "last screen" a couple times but froze/timed out there.

Been trying for a good 20 minutes now.

Not cool Apple, not cool.:mad:

Lord if it's this bad just for preorders, you folks are totally screwed when it comes time to activate. I guess it's a good thing Steve decided the only color you need on launch day is black. That'll hopefully slow the herd.
Still, I'm enjoying everyone freaking out over this. :D

Same here, I was one click away at 6:30am EST. But I really wanted white. I talked myself into black but now that option appears to be gone.

I tried to order at 8:00am EST and could only get so far. Around 9:00am I tried to start the process again and could not get past the ATT verification screen - unable to process your request, please try again later. I checked my cart at about 9:20am and my original attempt was there ready to finish the order. However, I have not gotten my email confirmation yet.

i'd suggest instead of trying to login in to apple, you should be logging in to etrade and picking up stock. this thing is going to be massive.

Same here, I've tried both the Apple site and the AT&T. Both fail. My husband took my car to work today or else I'd just drive there today and pre-order in person.

I'm struggling to get past the either the ATT upgrade screen (error P1015) or the Apple one (can't get past "replace a phone on my account" - get an error that my request couldn't be processed).

I'm considering going to Best Buy as there is one near me, but the convenience of having it shipped would have been nice.

Maybe I shouldn't be so upset that I had to click buttons for an hour and a half to get one reserved, it beats having to wait in a line that long just to reserve one.

Then again, come June 24th we'll see how long the line is at the Apple Store to pick up my phone...Hopefully they will have three lines:

1) Pick up reserved iPhone
2) Buy iPhone without reservation
3) Crap, the new iPhone is being released today? I sure picked the wrong day to stop by the Apple Store to pick up a copy of The Sims.
