Just one week after the last developer build was seeded to developers, Apple has pushed out iOS 4.1 Beta 3 for testing. Apple has also released an updated software development kit (SDK) to provide developers with tools for building for the new beta version.

The release is a bit of a surprise, as Apple has typically stuck to a biweekly release cycle for its iOS developer builds. Consequently, it is possible that Apple is beginning to wind down work on iOS 4.1 to prepare it for public release. Alternatively, there could simply be some new changes that Apple wanted to get into developers' without waiting an additional week.

No details on the changes included in the latest beta have yet been revealed. Among the most highly anticipated iOS changes is one addressing a bug with the iPhone 4's proximity sensor, an issue that Apple CEO Steve Jobs promised would be fixed in a future software updates. There have been conflicting reports, however, as to whether earlier beta versions of iOS 4.1 address the problem.

Quick! Someone go to the site and test!
Last I looked at the code it selects iOS/hardware combinations and employs an exploit [PDF document] based on those things. If an unreleased iOS is detected, it informs the user that the Jailbreak is not compatible with any newer version of iOS, pointing out that a downgrade would be necessary, but probably not possible.

So unless they've changed it, no, it won't work. But that wouldn't have anything to do with whether Apple patched the bug or not. Anyway, expect them to patch this one quickly, as it isn't exactly a benign exploit—it could be used in the wild to cause real damage from a website.

...not impressed by 4.1 at all on 3G. Very interested in iOS4 for iPad already. A bit surprised there's not yet a beta of it available in the dev center. Fall isn't far off...

Really??? But isn't the point of game center to have a massively viral feature? If not all of your iPhone-toting friends can access Game Center, doesn't that make it way less useful?

Don't believe me? Read the release notes. I would have posted them somewhere but I can't right now.

Fine I believe you. So does that mean GameCenter comes out with the new update?

I am thinking it will come this month, maybe after the roll out 4.1 to all users? I am dying to try 4 on my iPad...

Game Center has been included on these devices (and ran fine) since the beginning of iOS 4. Apple also never mentioned Game Center not being supported on these devices.

Why would Apple remove it now?

I was hoping that 4.1 on the 3G would fix the performance problems. Are you saying it doesn't or are you talking about something else?

Thanks!

Apple being early? Fall begin September 22nd and ends December 21. Given the history of Apple with dates, I suspect it will be shortest day of the year in the US when we see it.

Steve Jobs never said he promised to have the sensor issue fixed. He said he hoped. Regardless, any update on that? What about the white balancing issues?

Too bad about that Apple will definitely close that jailbreaking hole. Hope that someone finds a more suitable hole in the software (or Apple just gives the user an option of root access).

Why would someone lie about Game Center support for the 3G being pulled?

Anyway, screenshot of release notes below for the skeptics.

Guess I'm staying at work a bit longer to d/l the beta. The house I'm watching has internets at the speed of molasses.
