I thought about this, but I have an iPad and I'm not sure that it's worth it even at $99. I was tempted however at that price. If they were so great, they'd not be shutting it all down and blowing them out at $99. I'll just put that 99 aside for the iPad 3 when it comes out.
Not a bad idea. But to me, my iPad sales tax was $80 and my Touchpad was $85 (SAVE15HP coupon) so I don't find it to be a big cost to get to use a different OS also.

Anyway, HP's decision to shut down WebOS is the same reason they're shutting down their highly successful computer division. They're leaving the business for reasons beyond the OS they run.

Why everyone dumping their iPad?

Can someone please explain why everyone on a Mac forum are dumping their iPad and buying a TouchPad or more than one??

irobby, not "everyone" is. we have 2 ipads... and are definitely keeping them...but if the touchpad comes back... I will buy some to add to the household!

A few people may be dumping their iPads for Touchpads, but a vast majority of us are simply buying the Touchpads because it's such a great deal! You can't go wrong at 99 bucks! And to tell you the truth, once you install preware and download all the tweaks, the Touchpad is not a bad tablet. If the iPad is a 5 star tablet, the TP is around a 3.5 to 4 star. Problem is lack of apps. But it is a fun tablet to play with and it does have some really nice features I wish the iPad had like the ripple effect when you touch a spot, the Touchstone inductive charger, the use of cards and multitasking. Would I trade my iPad for it? No way. It's not good enough, but it's better than any other Android tablet, save for maybe the Transformer, however, the price makes it more tempting. Lol

I do - every time I sell a touchpad I bought for 99 to someone that pays 300 for it on Craigslist. Ok $250 but close enough. ;)

Just wait for that karma to bite you in the ass...

It's not karma waiting to bite him in the ass. It's a free market and he's clearly taking advantage of it. It sucks for the people who really want just one to use and not 10 to sell, but I don't think you can say karma will bite him ... even if karma did exist.

lol. You do realize that HP shut down fabrication of new hardware? Whatever was in the manufacturing rigs and jigs, or sitting on the docks ready for transport, is all we are ever going to see.

This was put on the touchpad site after the firesale

It's said only 5 left in stock, I want to buy one for my Mom, think can't order one!
Maybe I would wait the ipad 3, and then give the iPad 1 to my Mom

Apparently, HP selling their TouchPads for a loss to get rid of them is going to knock Apple out of business. So says somebody that actually gets paid to write for Forbes, Brian Caulfield:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/brianca...ead-99-touchpad-might-portend-the-ipads-doom/

Somehow he thinks that since consoles make money by giving away hardware (while making tons of money on game licensing), that selling TouchPads at a loss will lead to some magical revenue stream? Um, dude, that's crazy!

actually that's worked very well for game systems for a long time. they often sell them at or below cost and make the return on the games. not saying that works in this case. However it's not unheard of. it's just not totally crazy.

It's a $99 doorstop.

Pointless. HP might want to get back to the drawing board rather than continuing to sell a failed device at a loss. It's just sad at this point.

Talk about prideless. HP obviously doesn't give a **** about their brand image.

They can't be that stupid. Competing against Apple - not on quality, not on user experience, not on strength of ecosystem, but purely because it's a failed device that's moving at fire-sale prices, is not only a losing proposition, it's unsustainable.

Then again, considering the state in which HP allowed the Touchpad to be released, and then having Ruby make clearly asinine statements about it, (suggesting they did all this knowingly and deliberately??) . . . yeah, they pretty much *are* that stupid.

Given HP's recent actions, it's pretty clear to see what separates Apple from the rest.

I think it actually is totally crazy. The console gaming market is completely different than an internet tablet market. The tablet comes with enough software that most people don't even need to buy a single app. And the apps that are bought don't generate a lot of revenue because they are inexpensive. Compare that to the console market, where a game costs $50, much of which goes to the manufacturer of the console, who requires licensing fees of anybody writing a game.

Further evidence lies in the fact that Apple's app business generates very little revenue, and is considered to be doing well if it "breaks even." So, the TouchPad is not a razor that you need blades for, nor a printer that you need special ink for, nor a game console that requires expensive cartridges or disks to play. You can spend your $99 and never give another dime to HP, and get lots of use out of it. It will not generate any appreciable revenue other than the initial purchase price. And if they're taking a loss on that, they are taking a loss, period.

For a company like Nintendo or MS, where they get a decent royalty on every game sold, it makes sense. With tablets, it makes no sense.

It's like the old Jackie Mason joke:

"I got a guy who sells suits below cost."

"Below cost? How does he make money?"

"He sells a LOT of suits."

We like our toys here on the forum...plain and simple. A $99 toy to play with for awhile isn't too expensive, and I really do not see anyone claiming that the Touchpad bests the iPad in any category other than price.

ok and i.ll keep mine the touchpad is a better browser. I'm quite happy with the $100 I spent and $400 to spend else where. Isn't freedom great.

My Onsale order actually came through. Overall, I must say this is a great spare!

It's a shame the new batch ain't coming to the UK.

If anyone knows a UK retailer selling Touchpads at the knockdown price, PM me! :D

This seems more like it'll become a $99 touch screen GP32 or GPX machine. Which isn't a bad idea. We're talking about something that may be bound to get a lot of homebrew support, and folks experimenting on webOS coding. The only bad thing is that unless the browsers get continual support, browsing on it will turn into the worst version in time. Kind of like every flash browser, that isn't consistently updated.

I'm sure the Android ROMs will be kept updated. Every obscure device capable of running Android has at least a few developers working on it :)

I was able to score a few TouchPads early for various family members who simply would never buy an iPad. For them its a fantastic machine with an OS that in many ways is superior to the iPad but suffers from being rushed to the market. I actually take my TouchPad out of the house more than my iPad because its cheap enough that I can leave it in the car without worrying and I really am fond of the OS.

But for my mom I went and got her an iPad. It cost 5x more but because she lives in another state (so I can't support her locally) and she has such an incredibly difficult time in picking up computer basics then I figured that owning the more mainstream device is worth the extra money. She's still having a hard time understanding some concepts that would've been much easier on the TouchPad (multitasking, closing apps, cards, integrated messaging) but overall I'm confident its the right choice. (Especially since I simply dumped her Touchpad/accessories on Ebay and it instantly sold for $300 in profit. The hype definitely overvalued the product)
