I think people need to stop thinking of the current tablets as being desktop replacements. There will be files that can't run on every device I see coming out in the near future. If I send a Playbook owner an ALAC or Flac file, they can't play it. While that may be a disappointment, it is just a fact of life. Personally, I use ALAC a lot more than flash.

I don't think the iPad works as a great first or only computer. You also need a computer for updates, backups, syncing, etc...

Personally, if the iPad had been a full scale computer, I would not have bothered with it. I wanted something similar to my iPhone with a much larger screen for running apps, reading, web surfing, etc.. I actually like iOS.

For me, it has become my 70% MacBook Pro replacement :D

Too bad it´s not 100%. Otherwise you could sell your MBP away and get some cash! But now you can´t, ´cause you need it still for the 30%.

Apple really knows how to milk it! ;)

How shocking that Apple would produce a $500 product that would only function at 70-80% of the capacity of a $1,000 product.

But they could make the iPad a 1000$ product and then we would have the choise.

But of course they won´t, so we will have to buy both products. ;)

You don't have to buy either product. If you are complaining about buying both then you're either lacking in judgment or you find a benefit in having both.

Of course I don´t have to and I haven´t bought the iPad. I need MBP for my work, iPad just doesn´t cut it for my work... at least not yet! I hope it would though, so I could replace my MBP for an iPad. Touchscreens are cool!

I just find it funny how people say that iPad has almost replaced their MBP. And still they need to keep their MBP for some random stuff, otherwise it´s just a paperweight.

Wouldn´t it be nice to sell that MBP and do all the rest 20-30% with the iPad?

Even after I get an iPad I still see myself wanting my mbp or maybe trading it for an imac. I really see the ipad as being a 50/50 type replacement for a 'full computer' As much as I love touch screens, I just feel more productive while sitting at a laptop or desktop computer.

That will likely happen in 2-3 years. As for doing 70-80% of what a MBP does it's not a matter of needing both at all times. The iPad is an adjunct to the MBP. I travel a lot for work and I've mostly stopped carrying my MBP. There are still times when I need the MBP and a smaller display isn't a good substitute. So it's not a matter of having one device for all my needs, it's about having complementary devices that improve my experience.

I think I'll get a macbook air or a regular macbook instead. The iPad does not do enough things to replace a laptop.

But, it's not meant to replace a laptop/desktop, rather be a companion to it...Or if you're like me and do the heavy work at your desk, but like to be able to surf, blog, email with your lazy butt on the couch, well, then an iPad is a great toy.:D

Again my point was "I was disappointed" and i hoped the 2nd generation addresses the shortfalls NOT I hate this iPad and rants of bashing the iPad.. Loyalty to Apple is fine but rude "drivel" is ridiculous and childlike.. Hopefully Apple reads this forum and sees what it's consumers want and need and uses it for improving each coming generation of it's products..
I've been on forums such as this for over 18 years such as Dell, IBM, Windows ect. and never have I seen replies so rude and childlike.. Maybe the moderators should get a bit more aggressive here as they do on other forums and weed out the bad "apples"..

I certainly agree with you that there is a lot of childish and insulting responses to posts on this forum, you certainly had to realize that your last couple of lines about Windows 7 and Android would bring out all the sharks. Just like throwing chum in the water. :D

I don't own a MBP, so I guess it has fully taken the place of the void that never existed. ;)

I don't really need it to be a full desktop replacement. I have USBs hanging off my Mini, 2 HDMIs, and would rather not have to worry about plugging everything in every time I want to use it with a large monitor. I prefer having a portable and a desktop setup that runs all the time for transcoding and serving files.

I also own a HP 18 inch laptop. I still use it for bluray and storing (and/or editing) video and photos on longer trips. Not a big deal to add one more thing to my bag. Just to be clear, I don't want an iPad with an 18 inch screen.

Didn't realize I would offend anyone honestly mentioning WP7 or Android, i guess those two have to be added to the list with "flash"', bring up flash and it's like dropping the F-bomb in church...
I am happy to have heard from the moderators here and they seemed to have removed the unhelpful rude posts.. Thank you!!
I will most definately look into then suggestions given to me here, like I said I do not hate the iPad but just experienced the shortfalls while here on vacation.. Nothing would please me more then to see the 2nd gen address some of these issues, I would be first in line for one if they do..

But do you think a day will come, or already it is this way, when the iPad will be the perfect computer on the go or secondary device instead of a laptop? Meaning can it be that secondary device not third?

Kudos moderators. I kept an eye on this thread and was taken back by the barrage you received for simply stating you were disappointed in some aspects of the iPad, some went as petty as to correct your use of the word "too" which was a perfect example of how childish things got.
Your views were quite precise and I must agree with you on most. To mention WP7 or Android isn't blasphemy, like it or not they are good operating systems and are evolving at a faster pace then any iOS Apple has ever released and that is good for all of us consumers. I am a gadget guy and love purchasing the newest stuff released and for those bashing either android or WP7 you obviously have not used them, Android popularity speaks for itself and has almost if not equalled Apple's iOS in a very short time frame. I have a iPhone myself but recently purchased a WP7 phone from AT&T and rather like it and can most definitely see it become a OS for a tablet, it's in it's infant stages right now but with microsoft's resources could become something quite exciting. It's all in the users preferences, using both my iPhone and my WP7 I enjoy using the WP7 more, the active tiles are more appealing and useful to me then the iPhones icons and I find the phone I have with the WP7 uses the 1Ghz Snapdragon and believe me it is super fast with no lag what so ever.
If the CES 2011 show is any indicator of the upcoming year the iPad competitors have met and exceeded expectations of competing, the Motorola Zoom Tablet is a good example, has everything iPad users have been asking for and more. Let's hope the rumors of the only slight changes in the iPad 2 are wrong, if not this time next year the tablet king will no longer be the iPad.. That would be a shame.

I bought the cabrio despite the fact that I knew that I was going to move a lot of stuff. Now I am disappointed and the cabrio is to blame because i am not able to fit the stuff there. See the point?

Capt I haven't seen the zoom yet but raising the bar is a great benefit to all of us, what would be better then to have the iPad 2 up them all?? Like you we also have both iPhones and a WP7 phone and I totally agree the WP7 is more to my liking, but that's just me and would never put down those who like the iPhone over it.. supposedly there is a big update coming for the WP7 OS soon which will be very nice and apps are piling up for it everyday. Like you said it's in it's infant stage and who knows if it will pan out but for now it's my favorite phone.
As for those debating is the iPad a secondary or third device, for me it is a extension of my desktop computer, hence the reason would love to see it be even more versatile in future generations, I think it is an amazing device and has pretty much replaced my laptop which was previously my extension from my desktop computer..

As far as iTunes not supporting the video files I would think transcoding it might be a simple option. Maybe a google for convert flip video to ipad??

Just use the Handbrake program like many people have, it's a simple program that allows the user to convert from many different file types into the mp4 format that you need in order to view files on the user's iPad. I love my iPad and have used Handbrake to convert several different kinds of files in order for them to be viewable on the iPad.

I think you're suppose to buy/download freeware apps for stuff like that. There are various video players that play other formats (like VLC before it was taken down ) There are all sorts of great free weather map apps, etc, etc.

The iPad is a consumption device. It's for browsing the web, watching videos, sharing photos, etc, etc.

I took it with me when visiting relatives and I got great use out of it sharing videos and photos we took on a hike with my camera. I'm not really sure how or why but I think the photo app supports more video formats or something because everything ran just fine off the sd card.... or maybe my d5000 just happens to use the right format for ipad or something.....

Anyways, you can't really blame a car for not flying, or a cat for not swimming. Apple products generally fit very specific niches and unless you use the right ones in the right situation you'll feel very underwhelmed or ripped off.

...The ipad will get used as a reading/entertainment/browsing device and the laptop for documents, excel, picture type functions.

Bravo. The most sensible reply in the thread.

Interesting however, to follow the rumors about the next iteration of the iPad. If it's going to have cameras it's going to have adequate image software. It would seem as though Apple is either addressing the shortcomings of the Gen 1 iPad or attempting to increase the utility of Gen 2.

In any case, all of us Gen 1 iPad users are, in typical Apple fashion, beta testers. You can bet that much of what changes in Gen2 is going to be the result of consumer noise... er, feedback.

BTW, the Flash discussions and all the protestations of HTML5, processor use, etc, etc are just fanboy BS. This is a matter of control. Adobe refused to bend over for Jobs and give him control over Flash, as he has control over every other app allowed in the Store. Period. You have to admire the cohesiveness of the Apple Fanboy Community. It's truly remarkable. If only M$ could have fostered such loyalty...
