I've opened my current and previous unibody MBPs more than a couple of times and I've never seen such coarse tooling tracks.

Maybe it's because the innards of an iPhone aren't meant to be seen??? But I'd still expect consistent tolerances from a common manufacturing process.
Rhat's a surprise. I have a Mac Pro, and am amazed at the quality of the computer, especially the inside, which is only seen when doing physical upgrades. With Jobs gone, I wonder if quality will suffer at Apple.

I honestly don't care about how the phone looks on the outside, I'm more interested in the inside specs. It's going in a case the second I get it.

And the only reason I put a case on my iPhone is so I can put a strap on it, and even then, when doing moving pictures and video I've had my phone almost fall out of my case from the strap.

For the record, I have never dropped and damaged a phone in my life.

I live in Japan and pretty much every phone has a little area for a phone strap, mostly for mascots. But If I'm going around taking a ton of photos and moving constantly, I don't want my phone to be bumped into and fall. My strap has saved me from dropping the phone hundreds of times.

I was hoping they'd get a clue, but I guess it's still design over function. I don't have to put my cameras in cases to use a strap.

But this is my only gripe. I'd rather talk about wild rumors, like the 7 inch iPad having full phone capability.

No its there for a reason or they could of taken another .5mil or so off. Prob to make more rigid as others have pointed out.

Ummm....He just did. Is he supposed to bow down and worship the person that designed it. Do you praise and give most of the credit for the iPhone 4/4S design to Shin Nishibori? Because that is the man who designed what you and everyone else knows as the iPhone 4/4S today. For some reason in Apple forums this guy doesn't exist until this recent lawsuit with Samsung. So what's your answer regarding Mr.Nishibori? Have you ever given him any recognition for the industrial designed iPhone 4/4S?

The patent for the iPhone 4 design is credited to:

Jody Akana, Bartley Andre, Jeremy Bataillou, Daniel Coster, Daniele De Iuliis, Evans Hankey, Richard Howarth, Jonathan Ive, Steve Jobs, Duncan Kerr, Shin Nishibori, Matthew Dean Rohrbach, Peter Russell-Clarke, Douglas Satzger, Christopher Stringer, Eugene Whang and Rico Zorkendorfer.

The vast majority of Apple's design patents list the entire design team as inventors.

You forget that look nice and appealing is part of the functionality that Apple's products have to fulfil. And I am only half joking, if something pleases its user every day by its nice looks, it definitely fulfils the function of making the user happy and satisfied, which is the ultimate function to perform.

Ha… Yes, well I guess you could argue that luring the buyer with an attractive design is also an intended function!

That's not what is meant however when people talk about 'form following function' in relation to consumer devices. A mouse's function is to move a cursor around the screen, not to look pretty. A display's function is to let you see the intended output from the computer, not your reflection.

Kevlar? You mean the fabric? Liquid metal? OK - so that tech that Apple has rights to but isn't ready for building large parts yet? Aluminium blocks wifi/blutooth. Carbon fibre creates fairly ugly finishes.

Please tell me you're not an industrial designer.[/COLOR]

Disregard, already covered.

What is the obsession with it having to look completely different. The MacBook pros have had the same basic look for years and they are still the most beautiful machines I see around. The effort that apple puts into design means that they don't trash a working design because people want something new.

I've heard this argument before and I just don't get it. Do you want all Apple products to remain the same forever more? How boring is that. I don't agree that the MBPs are still the best looking computers around. PC design has come on leaps and bounds in the past few years. I don't want change for change sake but I do think designs should move on. I really don't want to pay to replace my phone or computer with a new one with the same design. I'd rather just keep my money and only upgrade when I have to. Apple are losing potential sales with this policy because whether people like it or not a lot of people like to upgrade when a new design comes out.

Totally agree, I think the mbp were ahead of their time when they came out but if they were still the best now why were so many apple fans hoping for a redesign at the last update. Whether products are technically the best looking ppl get bored of having the same design. Change is good.

Cant agree with this, why would Apple change the iPhone when they hope the design will become iconic, something that instantly says "iPhone". Yes, Porche change the shape of the Carrera, but not to the point where it isn't instantly recognised for what it is.

Apple are going with refinements to the current phone, making it lighter, thinner, stronger easier to manufacture etc. Remember that they're fighting tooth and nail in the courts to prevent copyists from plagiarising their current designs, because they see that design as a way to differentiate the iPhone... If the design changes radically every 12 months, then how will one instantly recognise the iPhone from all the generic crap from the likes of Samesung? Apart from all the legal fees, think of all the marketing dollars they spend establishing the iPhone brand.

Change for the sake of change? Just so it's different from the "old" model? For example, the reason the new MacBook Pro became thinner is because the technology has moved on to allow a thinner design. And regardless of any changes, it still looks like a MacBook! So NO they didn't change the MacBook design just because people got "bored", that would be stupid, and Apple aren't a stupid company.

Nevermind.

I don't understand this 'It's boring' complaint either - do people just sit and stare at an object and expect it to entertain them by virtue of its shape? Maybe a little robot arm could come out of the back and jangle some keys in your face to keep you occupied.

I picture someone sitting down intently looking at a phone while it's off and then crying "I'm bored! This thing is boring me! waaah!". And then they pick up some other phone while it's off and gaze enrapt at it because it has a different shape and is thus "entertaining". Bizarre.

"It's boring" in this sense is such a weird criterion by which to evaluate a phone's design.

For those who say iPhone has been going small changes. What are you talking about? Seems like apple has been releasing in 2 year frames

4S was a joke. I can hack my iPhone 4 and use spire but didnt bother, because I'm smart enough how to search for things on my own. Almost every app and game runs almost if not just as smooth on the 4 than the 4S.

4S was a joke upgrade so was the 3GS.

The 4 WAS revolutionary from the top bottom.
It's specs are still more then enough for me. 3G not revolutionary but still a nice bump.

Cant way for the 5. Come on apple surprise me.

let's hope they use a better adhesive for the black bezel on the iPhone "5" than what they use on the iPad...

It looks like ****. Terrible.

You love the kool aid. It's obvious to see and you are just the type of steeple we love. -Steve Jobs

I read this forum for years, even before i sign in and all i can say is that you are hypocrites,i mean this is not something new but with this leaks of the supposed new iphone you reached a new level either that or you have blinders.

"Why to change for the sake of change"
"it looks awesome they refine the perfect design"
etc. crap,comparing porsche with a phone:eek: .
By your standards the imac g3 was perfect why change it?oh but apple did change it and everyone said the imac g4was perfect, then why change it? just refine it(based on your logic always  ),but they did change it into imac g5 another perfect one.... do you get it now?
Same goes for the laptops powerbook titanium ....... etc etc.
Now lets go back to the iphone it was perfect by your sayings why change it?and when they did and iphone 3g was out all was wow awesome, perfect right, why change it????but then the iphone 4 came out another perfect design, but you all waited for a new design a year later and when it didn't happen you moaned like girls but you did buy it and now a year later that you know (based on rumors always)that the new iphone will have the same design(just a bit strerched and instead of glass in the back will be metal wow yes i know amazing right) like the iphone 4 suddenly all say why change it?is the perfect design all it needs is some polish.... only for that i want to see a complete redesign from apple, but knowing you you will say "wow its perfect i will buy a dozen".

As for apple they don't care they have the costumers drinking water in their name, iphone 4 a failure with the antenagate, then the iphone 4s with a lousy battery and a software that is good but also 5 years old.
The people complained about the imac not to get thinner but to fix the heat problems and if possible to use desktop hardware in it,they didn't listen, now people say don't make the iphone any thinner is fine as it is but put a bigger battery in it....you know is going to need it, are they going to listen?based on the leaks not.
4 months ago maybe more i said that if apple goes that way it will be the first step to take into self destruction, either they will be forced to change the design in a year do to dropped sales(something that might not happen since they opened up in china now so they will have high sales probably+the last project Steve was involved thingie)or in 2 years time expect some major changes to happen and your "perfect design" going off the window.
One thing is for sure europe sales will not be strong and 2 years in this tactic its a long long time in the phone business, the others have catch up and all ready surpassed apple thats why apple is suing like crazy to put a stop to this.
As for the iphone 4s since allot will say"it sell like crazy you don't know what you are talking about" i will say this Steve Jobs died thats right the iphone 4s was out and Steve was dead, most of the sales was "emotional" ones, its like when an actor dies right after he finished filming a movie the movie will sky rocket in tickets no mater what and now we have "the last project that Steve personaly got involved with the iphone 5", as for me i want apple to inovate to give something that will really make me say awesome again,i want to see a new imac and buy it,i want to see a phone that i will want to buy it and not say like some "i will put it in a bag so i don't care how it looks" or "i am locked in the ecosystem and i can't get out" you know there is a difference between this and to have a itch in your hand to go buy this product,i felt it many times before in the last decade when apple was presenting something new to us and i want to feel again this excitement, i am sure the old members know what i am talking about in this last words.

No one is saying apple is a stupid company but I never bought the 4s because it wasnt much of an upgrade and I know plenty of other ppl in the same boat. Apple has plenty of money but they could have alot more. Updated mac pro anyone? Oh no its fine as it is, its the best ever!

Agreed.

I don't think anyone is arguing that nothing has to change, that the iPhone, iPad et al need to stay the same. The new MacBook pro is a good example of where change toward a more ideal form is possible owing to improvements in technology, NOT simply to pander to nerds with the attention span of a goldfish. This is change, but not for changes sake. To be clear, I'm not arguing for no change... that would lead to stagnation, but to change the design so completely so as to lose the design DNA of the device would be counter productive for a company like Apple.

So to all "whinny nerds" who need to have a different shape of phone, I'm sure Samsung will be able to crap something out for you.

Nevermind

You seem to be impatient for improvements in the iPhone. So am I. But where we differ is that I don't want change for the sake of it. What improvements can you point to that the iPhone 4S should have implemented?

Nevermind.
