A Closer Look At Today's Leopard Revelations

It has been said before, but it is amazing how much iTunes influences OS X as a whole. If you want to see the future, just look at the next iTunes. The new Finder is exactly like iTunes 7 in every way. They even added Coverflow to it. Just glad they finally are going to have a consistent UI.

WWDC attendees are all registered Apple Developers, and as such, have signed non disclosure agreements. If any of them post any information that Apple hasn't already publicly released, then they can be sued. As such, you won't see many directly posting about un-revealed features. In a few days, some websites will undoubtedly have all the detailed info you could ever want.

As someone else said, Leopard will run, but it probably won't have all the eye candy on older machines. And Apple still hasn't released a 'minimum requirements' list. So, for example, my early G4 (PCI ATI Rage 128 graphics,) will likely *NOT* support all of the eye candy, just as my 2 year old PC notebook doesn't support all of Vista's eye candy.

It can also be turned on or off (and access controlled, I assume) in the Security prefpane:

ahh...but where do we get the beta?

i watched the keynote after i got home from work (started work just after it finished, so i only got to read the highlights)...

i think we expected another iPhone or something...too much to ask...what we got was a lovely final installment of the flech and blood of apple inc. - os X

I'm not following. Everyone is saying it was moved to the Finder, but I think that is something completely different. What we're seeing in the Finder is just a quicker reference to shared folders / Macs on the network or Macs with your .Mac account online (think of it as a VPN).

This is not the same as bringing up a window and controlling the person's screen while they get to watch. As far as I can tell this feature IS indeed missing. Sad, too.

I think it's probably a mix of both...meaning that you will be able to remote view and control the screen, but only of people in your LAN or whom have .Mac to establish the pseudo-VPN. It's a positive sign that the share-screen icon is still in iChat (as witnessed earlier in the thread), unless that is solely for iChat Theater.

Tiger's release was touted as having over 200 new features, but it turned out that a small fraction of that number qualified as being really new (according to all professional reviewers). I suspect similar hyperbole is involved this time ... it is seemingly an integral part of the swagger that surrounds major promotional events.

Me too, but I hope it stays in iChat!!! with that find a Mac thing it would only work with someone on your network or that has .mac 😡 the way they had it in iChat you would do it with ANYONE!!!
 
Jump the shark at wwdc 2007!

Damn.. if Ubuntu would just put commercials on TV we would all be screwed.

I am running Leopard now, and it looks like the "top secret features" were thrown together at the last minute. The drop shadows look like something from stardock.com, and the stacks are just plain annoying if you have more than 15 items your folders. I miss Tiger already, and yes I know its a "near final" version which worries me.

It felt like I watched the 2006 wwdc keynote over again with a few deleted scenes.
 
Focus follow mouse

All I want is focus follow mouse, that will be even more important to me than being able to pretend I'm washing my face in a waterfall in iChat...

You appear to be overlooking the "Share Screen" button in the first column (not the sidebar).
 
I think the share screen facility in the finder is ace. The only computers I'm likely to want to share screens with are my own, and through .mac's VPN I can set them all up to be an extension of my current machine. That is, let's face it, amazing. It'll be interesting to see if screen sharing also remains in iChat. I'd have thought it would, since it'll be related to iChat theatre. BUT, that still restricts screen sharing to people who can use iChat, not "anyone". We're talking people with bonjour on a local network; .mac addresses; and possibly AIM addresses. It's not clear all features of iChat will work with a regular AIM account, which leaves bonjour and .mac - the same people who's machines can be made available on the sidebar. Where's the problem?
 
While I was disappointed by the announcements yesterday, this is no longer the case. After having watched the keynote and demos, I think this is the most radical change the mac platform has undergone since the introduction of OS X.

The new desktop, Finder and Quicklook, along with the network searches are going to change everything.

Apple is in the process of abandoning the spatial Finder and replacing it with a search based Finder. If you think that Cover Flow/Quick Look is just eye candy, then think again.

In Leopard, you will have frequently accessed files in stacks. If you need anything else, you just spotlight and use coverflow/quicklook to instantly see the right file.

It looks to be very efficient.

 
There is much more beneath. i.e. I haven't seen it in seeds but in the middle of keynote you can see a glimpse of search in help menu item.

If you look closer at keynote stream you can find some more I'm sure.
 
F***!! Am I the first one to notice the "transparent" menu bar has lost it's round corners? 🙁 i really dislike the transparent effect too; what's the point if you can't put windows behind the bar?
