Remove the 2 and 4S from your signature then. You have an iPad and iPhone right, why bother putting in the number. People will know that you have the latest model... or will they? If I am so wrong, why did you ever both putting in the 2 and 4S? Because specificity matters.

Yes and no. It matters to Apple fans like us, and we're savvy enough to know what version of the product we own. But the general public? Most have no clue what one they have. "The new one, I think" is the answer I get a lot.

Your argument about searching for iPads is flawed. If someone knew to search for iPad 2 I think it might be easier for someone to just search iPad. Not a difficult concept.

I am thinking that one of the reasons why Apple called the new iPad, "iPad" is to create confusion when it comes to buying from resellers or when buying used iPads. Calling this new iPad "iPad" is a marketing nightmare since people are calling it names ranging from iPad3 to iPad3rd gen to New Ipad... Unless, the intent is to create confusion. How do you make people iPads buy from an authorized seller? You increase the launch frame product availability and make them question their decision to buy an iPad online which may or may not be the "new" one. With iPad 2, you knew what it was called, you knew what to search for, and you were fairly assured of what you were receiving. Not any more...

People may refute the above argument by saying that iPod did not use specific nomenclature either. But, iPad is an expensive purchase that is more likely to warrant resale. Further, my notion that the new naming is troublesome is supported given that it will be extremely difficult to determine product requirements for apps. Do you think that a typical user will be able to determine if that hot new game that just came out is supported on their device? Will they say, "Do I have a 4rd or 5th gen iPad again?" I think not...

I feel dumber for having read this, and may God have mercy on your soul.

The naming system was used to conserve money for things that matter. No more registering new names and spending money in an area that's just kinda stupid. For new products, it would be understandable for the first 3 years but afterwards, if the product sticks, it should just go under 1 name.

Could you imagine?
iPad HD 1080p Spastic
iPad Imagine
iPad Polish
iPad Inspiration
iPad Pwned
iPad 4371
iPad 1337
iPad X85

Does any of that mean anything? Nope. It's just superfluous and not an Apple thing.

Instead of complaining, I have come up with a great solution to this problem: iTunes should place a symbol near every app in the store to let you know if it is compatible with the devices that are currently registered to that iTunes account. If you see a green checkmark, all of your devices are compatible. Yellow means that only some devices are compatible. Red means that none are currently compatible.

Is that better?

The OP tries to use the argument that the iPad warrants resale to justify his contentions, yet even more expensive Apple products with higher resale values also lack a model number (MacBook Air, MacBook Pro). There have also been other theories as to why it is the "new" iPad instead of the iPad 3, most notably that there will be a smaller version of the iPad released later this year (maybe it will be the model they target schools with in tandem with the textbook initiative they rolled out in January). Then you'd have the "iPad" and the "iPad Mini" or something similar.

If I am a kid then you are a janitor at the company where you work. CEO job is stresful? It should be! Where else do you make such obsurd amounts of money? A doctor performing brain surgery has a far more stresful job and is often payed next to nothing for a more demanding job. What happens to CEOs that fail to perform? They contact their buddies and go to another executive position. Who did Oracle hire recently? A CEO that was let go at HP. He pocked millions in severance pay and got another high level position. Such great panalty for lack of performance. /s Would the typical person on this forum be able to make cripping mistakes at work, collect millions, then get another equal position? Of course not.

As for vision, that is a nice term to throw around, but what is it really? If Steve provided vision for apple, does that mean that apple now has no more vision? Is the vision changing with Tim at the helm? If you are right, then sell your Apple stock right now because the man who guided apple is no longer around.

Btw, thanks for dicrediting the hard working men and women at apple, all over the world, who help to bring the products to life that you are using. Then again, maybe the CEO of Honda glued your car together himself. lol

For being such a genius, your spelling is atrocious!

For an urkel, you seem quite ignorant of the 2.0 in my name.

Trust me, you may soon wish that I was in charge of Apple. With Steve 1.0 no longer around, I fear that Apple's hayday may have come and gone.

It's "heyday."

Steve Jobs 1.0 would never have allowed such a glaring mistake to slip through in his correspondence.

It's only confusing this year because people get attached to certain expectations and have trouble accepting change. As others have said repeatedly, it's a non-issue for every other Apple product (there's no such thing as an iMac 14). It will be no different with the iPad. People searching for used
iPads will just have to check model numbers (just as they already do when buying iPods or MacBooks). Sure, that's less convenient for resellers, but why would Apple care? The convenience for buyers and sellers on the used market is obviously not a factor, why would it be?

As for more than one model being on sale in stores - that's a rare situation that will likely be over after this year. I predict in 2013 the iPad will see a bump in storage capacity (with a 128GB going for the same price as the current top-tier model). The 16GB size will remain at $399, filling that slot. So - 4 models ranging from 16GB to 128GB, all "fourth-generation" iPads. The iPad 2 will be gone, and so will confusion.

Yup, going into the toilet, maybe tomorrow.

Not selling any iPads (no matter what they call it).

No market penetration (0ver 50% of all the households in the US have at least one Apple product).

No interest in Apple (check any newspaper, blog, etc. any day)

No interest in the stock, it's tanking (AAPL closed today at 617.62)

Yup...into the toilet...

LOL. Exactly. One of the richest companies in the world. I just wish I bought stock back in the mid-nineties as I'm sure most people do!

Putting a number on it just dates the hardware and decreases its value to the consumers. As mentioned, they are just selling it like the macbooks and imacs. They want to create a long line of iPads and eventually you have to stop or else in a few years it will be the iPad 23.

LOL... This reminds me of the movie Airplane where there is a movie poster in the airport showing an old man with boxing gloves and the title is Rocky XVIII or something. :D

Lol yeah, but that was satire of the movie industry's trend to over-use movie IPs. With all the Vampire movies coming out we are seeing it come to fruition, albeit without the numbers. Adding things such as The Passioning, Final Intensity, gets the younger females waiting anxiously in lines.

Who said anything about the present? As a strategist, I think long term. Apple is doing fine today, and I have never contested that fact, no matter how hard you may try to argue the contrary. I am talking about the long term health of Apple.

Many a mighty giant corporation have fallen down from the heights of success only to be buried in the depths of shame. I am not even mentioning the likes of Enron, but the more well-to-do companies such as Nortel. At one time, companies such as RIM and Nortel were THE success stories. When all stocks fell after the high-tech bubble burst, RIM shares soared. I warned people that RIM would suffer its current fate. People laughed. Who is laughing now M F Shrinker?! lol

I call it the iPad HD.

I like this. It is simple, differentiating, easy for people to figure out what it is. Everyone these days knows that HD something is "supposed to be better".

I'm glad we have you as our Macrumors Prophet to enlighten us with all of your divine wisdom.

Calling it the iPad is the wisest decision they've made. Samsung, HTC and Motorola all need to hop on board the sensible naming pattern.

Droid x, droid x2, HTC incredible, incredible 2, Samsung galaxy S I, II, & III.

It sounds like a gimmick when you keep adding numbers. Also when you think of a Ford F150. You don't say the Ford F150 2??? If someone asks what you drive it's a Ford F150. If your buying a replacement driveshaft for the truck you buy a part that's compatible with 2011+ trucks... Using the year as a differentiator has worked in that industry for decades and apples year structuring has worked in the Mac line as well....
At least apple doesn't name it like HP does.. HP G70-1271CL it's totally stupid IMP.

Oh that is perfectly fine since its clear what year car the model is. However, this is more complicated in this case since Apple is not very clear about that. They do call this the 3rd gen iPad, but never directly.

Look at the Android market and you'll know exactly why Apple dropped a number from the name of the product. The Galaxy S2 alone has almost a dozen variants in the US alone, not to mention overseas variants (Galaxy S2, Galaxy R, Galaxy W, Galaxy SII Epic 4G Touch, Skyrocket, Captivate Glide, Galaxy S2 LTE/HD LTE, etc.). What's even worse is that depending on the specific model and carrier, you might be running a completely different version and/or screen size/screen resolution of the Android OS than the other phones. With the iPads, the differences between the models in each generation have been the amount of storage, connectivity options, and black or white bezel. Everything else is the same in each generation.

If you want an iPad 2, you know what you'll be getting and what it's going to look like. The same goes for the new iPad. You can't say the same about Android phones, and that's a shame.

It's much more simple than this. Some Apple exects got upset about the furor over the naming of the iPhone "4S," so they are simply saying enough is enough, no more numbers for iOS devices. Next iPhone will just be iPhone.
