Another vote for Michael C. Hall as Dexter and James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano ... both make it impossible to see anyone else in those roles, and make you feel sympathy for two characters that really are actually despicable people.

I'll also add Steve Buscemi in ""Boardwalk Empire" and Ian McShane in "Deadwood." Paula Malcolmson (who played Trixie) was also fantastic in "Deadwood" ... really amazing at portraying this hard-as-nails hooker with these little flashes of compassion.

A show I keep coming back to;
Image
A maverick doctor haunted by the demons of his past, who must now fight an everlasting battle with the forces of darkness whilst dealing with the burden of day to day admin. Dagless is an ex-warlock, having renounced the occult in favour of the stability of the medical profession.

Which show is this?? :p

I thought Russel Crow as Maximus in Gladiator was pretty darn incredible. Before that Ripley in Alien/Aliens. I'm sure there are others.

Agree on Vil Kilmer in Tombstone, and James Cromwell (and I had the privilege of seeing him live on stage in an excellent production of A Long Day's Journey Into Night a few years ago; amazing).

Patrick McGoohan as No 6 in The Prisoner is another I'm delighted to see mentioned here, as this was one of the cult shows that absolutely gripped me when it was broadcast a good many years ago.

I'm surprised no-one - as yet - has mentioned Leonard Nimoy's inimitable portrayal of Mr Spock, in the original Star Trek franchise; he was one of my all time heroes and role models.

Sam Carter, Stargate SG-1. I finally started watching SG-1 after cutting my teeth on SGU, which is decidedly different to SG-1 but both really interesting in rather different ways.

The Doctor? Yep, but not Tennant.

You like the new Doctor, Matt Smith? I think he's fantastic and fits the role really well. I like Amy Pond as well. :D

I really enjoyed Phil Hartman's character, Bill McNeil, on Newsradio, although his character really worked well because it was an ensemble cast that worked well as a whole.

A close second would have to be Lucille Bluth from Arrested Development.

In TV dramas, I've got to say that President Bartlet remains my favorite.

In film, I think the best comedy role was Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly. She personified evil in such a comical yet poignant way.

For a dramatic role, I don't think anyone can match the sheer magnitude of character that was Don Corleone.

I think he's doing a very good job so far. He's arguably young for the role, but at times when needed he looks every bit the Doctor's age, if that makes sense.

Makes perfect sense. He can have these subtle but distinct expressions/body language of someone who has the experience of living 900-ish years.

Movie characters

I have always loved Charles Laughton in the title role of The Private Life of King Henry VIII.

A favorite female character is Carrie White in Carrie.

TV character

Deputy Barney Fife in the Andy Griffith Show.
