My hope is for Mac OS 10.8 (Couger or what ever they call it) has a "Apple Assistant" interface for disabled people:)

I have very limited use of my hands (L2 Cerebral Palsy) and it would be great to have a FULLY INTEGRATED system for managing the my (forth coming) iMac.

"let's talk iPhone." in the invitation pretty much confirm it. Apple always make hints in their invitations(like "back to the Mac)...

Thanks for making this video (I, for one, can wait until Tuesday for the details).

One question: what song is playing in the background?

Update:
Actually Shazam answered the question (demonstrating a different sort of voice recognition?):
Take What You Take by Lily Allen (2006) from "Alright, Still" album.

The Assistant feature should support questions like that.

-What song is playing in the background?
-What is my current ETA?
-Define "superfluous"?
-What is 2586 divided by 14?
-What's a synonym for "supersede"? --- Another?
-Spell "supplant".
-What will the weather be like tomorrow afternoon in London?
-How many inches are in a yard?
-What is Citi's current stock price?
-What is the runtime of Forrest Gump?
-What year was Heather Graham born?
-Who is the CEO of Kimberly-Clark?
-What is the capital of Finland?
-What time is it in Los Angeles?
-What time zone is Dallas in?
-What was the final score of the Yankees game?
...

I think this would be pretty cool. Driving and texting is no longer a problem. I think I would use it a lot, but not in public.
If your mind is distracted by dictating verbal orders to a phone then there is STILL a problem. Namely, that human brains are not designed to be good multitaskers when life and death split-second decisions are involved. And I'd hate to be somebody who plowed into a pedestrian because my mind was on something else.

+1

So true. That is what voice recognition should be capable of; making your life easier :)

Guess what - WP7.5 just shipped with FULL speech interface(Call, Find, App, Text). Eat it Apple, you're a bunch of copycats.

I'm guessing both of you are very excited to download this.

But an Andorid user talking to their phone doesn't have the social status of an Apple user talking to their phone.

So, do Andorid users have more or less status than Android users?

Sorry, but I got beef with any speech recognition software. Mostly because are software calibrated on english american accent that does not recognise my british english with italian accent. But that is just me.

I can see this working well for people with certain disabilities.... then again, my android device is capable of perfectly "writing" my texts, emails and all other chats for quite a while now and yet I don't use it very often.

Sounds good but To bad it doesn't work really well internationally outside America. I try and do my best impersonation of an American accent with voice assistance but always opens up some random thing.

The existing one works ok for me and I've been testing the nuance dragon dictation apps from the app store, which is what the new features use and it's great, multiple languages, variations on english from American, British, European English. Give it a go and see.

I wish I had a pickle

I can't wait to try the following line just to see what it does:

"Open the pod bay doors, HAL."

You should try out Siri. Ask it that and it says "Oh HAL, it's so sad" and then sends you to the Wikipedia article on HAL.

For a better example of what we might see, if I tell Siri "I wish I had a pickle" it looks for restaurants in my town serving pickles. That's what the Siri technology is all about, interpretation. Remember the voice recognition tech is from Nuance. The interpreter is Siri's - Apple's.

It knows pickles are food, that wishing I had one implies purchase, that you purchase food at restaurants, that I probably want one nearby... That's good interpretin'!

I gave the Hal sentence another go, this time typing it in and including the comma. This time it said "everyone knows what happened to HAL. I'd rather not talk about it." wow!

What happens if you enter those statements into Android or Windows?

The only way Assistant is relevant in today's market is if you can construct workflows with it, beyond atomic commands.

This better not be the top non-hardware feature Apple is going to talk about next Tuesday. I just don't see myself talking to the phone in public places or even by myself at home. Don't care how good it's able to recognize my voice. I just want a larger display to enter text better.
I use my phone all the time sitting on the crapper at work during break time. Picture me telling my phone to download while sitting in the stall with bossman sitting next to me. No thanks! I don't need the embarrassment.

Than Apple users? According to market studies, Apple users earn more and spend more money, on average, than Android users. According to social research, near the median, people who earn more and spend more in conspicuous consumption are seen as having slightly higher social status on average. Near the extremes, the very rich and the poor, things might be different. YMMV.

Possibly all true for all I know, but I was making fun of the mispelling of Android as Andorid.

Sorry but people that text and drive are dumb and put others in danger. Here is a nice web site dedicated to the moronic action of texting while driving.... none of them had an accident until they did.

Probably only in the next iPad. :(
I don't see why. It's probably integrated into iOS 5, so whatever device runs that will have it. Might not go back as far as iPad 1 or iPhone 3GS, but prob only because of processor requirements.

Hello! And welcome to Movie Phone! You have chosen ... Agent Zero? ... Why don't you just tell me the name of the movie?

FINALLY catching up...

I'm happy iPhone is finally coming with this feature. It's been available on the Android phones for a while now. If the latest upgrade is worthwhile, I'll be getting an iPhone 5. Otherwise, I will sadly be switching to an Android phone. I've been a local Apple customer for years. I've owned at least 5 Macs (and still use a Mac), have purchased the first iPhone, upgraded to iPhone 3, then bought an iPhone 4 and have an iPad. But, I am getting tired of Apple falling behind the curve in technology. Hope iPhone 5 makes a homerun to keep me in the fold... I don't mind paying premium prices---just as long as I get premium products.

Because they need to sell iPhone 5's. I'm guessing it will only work on 4s or 5.

I find Google voice search and Voice Control in it's current implementation quite accurate, so I'm optimistic for this. If I could send a quick text while driving it would be useful. Does it read texts to me also?
