I saw this as soon as they went liv eon the website.

Does anyone know if the storage is soldered on? Even if it's not I bet it's proprietary, and NVME m.2 won't work.

Can’t use your own ram. Soldiered onto the motherboard.

Has that been confirmed? I ask because of this post I made:

Note how the above is clear about no upgrading storage after purchase, it's only "as built".

Now notice the omission of "not user accessible" from the RAM details:

Guy, relax, this is for the MAXED out Mac mini for some serious performance. If the price hurts your butt, then there is a $799 option as well. A comparably spec'd out PC with 6 cores, 2TB flash etc etc is still in the realm of thousands of dollars.

Can't tell if you're serious or not. Quantity of memory and storage have next to nothing to do with performance. You could build a similarly specced windows box for half the price of the maxed out one.

They clearly pointed out the user upgradeable ram slots in the keynote...

I thought I heard them say that, but I didn't recall for sure, awesome ... and see below :)

Unless somebody made a massive mistake that confirms it should be user accessible.

Oh yeah, and here, it's clearly NOT soldered ...

Tech spec says SO-DIMM memory. So you should be able to change it, just how difficult it will be.

Looks like a piece-of-cake, just like my 2012 models :)

They’ve lost the plot, SJ introduced the mini to make it an impulse buy at a cheapish price, this mini destroys this. Having said that I *might* upgrade from a 2012 quad i7, but I’ll be balking at the price nonetheless.

It's doing double duty as both Apple's "entry level desktop" and "pro standalone desktop", depending on configuration. It's fine, but I'd hoped for more, personally.

The last big swing Apple took with desktop design was the trash can Pro, and I guess Jony just got bored with the Mac after that.

I think this is the best Mac users can expect from Apple these days: incremental (and belated) internal upgrades and... a space gray exterior so you can distinguish it from a Mini from 2010. The upgradable RAM is nice, but one gets the feeling this is all in the tone of "here, this ought to keep you Mac users quiet for a while. Now excuse us while we focus all of our efforts in every other area of hardware."

This site is confusing. Everyone has complained for years about the mini be incapable. They have also complained about lack of higher end options. They complained about soldered on ram. Apple delivered on all of that and now it’s too expensive. Maybe HP would be better suit your needs.

There is a new cooling system..we may need to remove it to access the RAM.

SSD upgrade pricing is insane and keeps me from getting one.

Considering SSD prices have been dropping since early 2018 and will continue to do so in 2019. The industry may level the pricing in 2019 though.

This is just a slap in the face by Apple. Where are the silent iMac updates?

If you think this is bad, just wait until you see the top config price for the new Mac Pro next year. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s $20,000.

This is why I can’t get behind this company anymore. After four damn years, they couldn’t see fit to come up with a configuration for $499-599? They’re hell-bent on flinging out the affordable, entry-level tier. They yanked the iPhone SE, the flagship phones start at $749, their BYOKDM “Mac for everyone” has jumped up $200-300. I guess I should be happy they kept two useful USB ports.

You know what? Screw this outfit. 25 goddamn years carrying their water, singing their praises, evangelizing the platform, switching over two dozen friends, families and co-workers. I’m done, I’m outta here. Bigger, more important (and interesting) things on this planet than constantly hoping this hipster wet dream of a company will ever pull its head out of its ass. For the first time since 1993, I can’t bring myself to give a damn at any level. When Jobs died he took the soul and vision with him. Period.
