Yes. Create "1" partition and then the other options should be available such as format which you need to do to format it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". Once you've done that then you can continue to install OS X.

You'll never have the exact amount of what your HDD is, that 989 MB is correct.

awesome. so I guess I did everything right. Thanks! I really was paranoid. now I am running updates. The drive says its capacity is 999GB and free space is 989GB. wonderful!

13" MBP upgrade to 1TB and RAM is diff?

So as you can read by the other threads, I just upgraded my MBP 13" HD to 1TB. It went very smoothly for someone who has NO IDEA what the hell he's doing. So anyways, I got all my programs installed and checked activity monitor to see how everything is. Side note: it is UNREAL seeing 973GB free under disk usage.

But anyways, I look at system memory and notice that there is little free RAM! Before I upgraded the HD I had 1GB free but now its 414MB. Is this right? How can I get my RAM back? Here's the screenshot:

Inactive = free

Apps will use more RAM when there is more of it available, that's why you might think it was a downgrade but in order to get better performance, they use RAM instead of HD

yea I mean your machine is still seeing and able to use all 4gb of ram. It says 3.75gb because the 9400m steals 256mb (= .25gb) of ram. the amount used is determined by what programs you've been running and actually, having less "free" ram is kind of a good thing. It means all of your available ram is being allotted to different programs making them run faster.

that makes sense thanks guys! I just thought it was a bit weird but now I know that my RAM is ok.

Another issue that arose, is that the HD or something is making a bit of purring sound. Its not very loud but its noticeable. I can hear like a fan sound along with spontaneous clicking sounds. Is this ok? My laptop still performs ok and the clicking doesnt do anything.

From the screenshot, are you using more apps simultaneously?
The thing is, the more apps you use simultaneously, more it eats RAM (obvious).
If you have more money, you might want to buy more RAM (to 8GB).

Additionally, if you have more background apps running, that's also a problem.

installed 1TB in MBP 13", lil paranoid..

Okay so ever since I installed the 1TB HD in my MBP, I noticed little things that didn't occur with my old drive.
-It makes random clicks and makes a fan like sound,
-I feel a slight vibration throughout the laptop when I put it on my lap,
-the motion sensor doesn't set when I move the laptop.

also is there a way to check that the HD is working normally? I want to be extra sure.

Is this a 9.5mm hard drive you installed?

so does my drives behavior sound normal? It is verified for SMART status when I checked disk utility.

The random clicks is the drive parking the heads when its idle. You can Google "Load Unload Cycles" for more information.
The fan-like noise should be the drive itself, you can hear the "whoosh" of it spinning.
The vibration is normal with hard drives that have a lot of platters. The more platters it has, the more it vibrates. If its a 7200rpm drive, it will make the vibrations even worse.

No idea about the motion sensor tho.

That's one of my complaints about the WD drives.. The annoying click sound. My blue had the same problem and my old black sounded like a jet engine.

i read other reviews stating that there were no vibrations with their drives. Do I have a clunker then?

WD 1 TB and SMS?

I was wondering if those who installed the WD 1 TB into their MBPs, if the WD's ShockGuard technology works well with the MBP's Sudden Motion Sensor? I don't hear that click anymore now that I installed the drive. Was wondering if both ShockGuard and SMS work together well or they cancel each other out?

Ok so I recorded the sounds my MBP makes and the clicking is very audible and constant. I am thinking of calling WD on Monday. here is the link:

does it sound as bad I think?

Listened to your audio file 2 times. That sound is perfectly normal for notebook hard drives, especially for drives with that many platters. Its the aggressive OS X power management that forces the drive to park its head every few seconds, you wouldn't hear it that much within Windows. You can force your HDD to ignore the power management commands from OS X with a small tool called hdapm
