Mmm smells like iPhone 5 that turned to “cosmic slate” over time with lots of small polka dots from sand and dust that got under the case. For that reason I had never used a single polycarbonate case ever since, only cases with microfiber padding or rubber.

I wonder why they didn’t care to choose same alloy as iPhone 6s back in the days, I can remember the only good thing about that phone was that aluminum was finally thick

Because that will be a compelling feature for the next one... just as it was for the 6S that followed the bendy 6.

That's what can happen when you USE things! They can fall, or get scuffed, like is this new to people still?
Want a case, get a case, sure.
I don't see people getting cases for a luxury car, or a luxury watch.
Use it how you want, enjoy your device, live your life.
All of these things above will server you better than complaining and nitpicking, highly recommend just get what you want, enjoy it how you want!

Pro tip:

Put a case on your phone
Put a tempered glass protector on the screen
Put more tempered glass on the lenses
Now put a condom on you phone for better protection
Finally, put everything in a soft bubble

The usability of the device declines a little bit, but you will have a 10/10 condition iPhone after several years.

This may be seen as broke mentality, but... I mean... Phones can break and they are not cheap...

That's why Apple Care is important.

I’ve been getting AC+ instead of cases since 6s Plus. Not a single damage claim, ever. And I’ve dropped my iPhones 100s of times in their lifespans.

Just take solace in the fact that tools (like these phones are) WILL pick up wear and tear from normal usage over time. And yes that means they won’t look Factory New five years down the road. That’s just the way life goes.

that’s the key to happiness and peace in life.

I also don’t use a case and only rely on AppleCare. I rarely drop phones. But if I do, it seems this one won’t survive as well as the 11 pros with their stainless corners.

So, uhh... how much have you paid in applecare in total, without having made a single claim? Would have been better off saving that money and investing it. Of course it's "insurance" and you never know, but insurance works in favor of apple... and plus you have a "deductible" for a claim anyway.

The watch analogy is an excellent one. Watches DO get damaged often, and as a result, Apple offers two product lines with premium metals/materials at a higher cost to mitigate that fact. The stainless series and Ultra (titanium) are much more durable than the cheaper aluminum sport models. And I think that is the overall frustration here, Apple is using a cheaper material that is prone to damage on their high end phones now. It is worth having a discussion about it, as there is a subset of pro users that have never owned an aluminum phone before, who don't want to put their premium product in a case, that might be surprised by the significant drop in durability.
I think there's going to be a need for a lot of people who previously never even thought about buying Apple Care for a Pro in Steel or Titanium to put some money towards AC+ with the new "pro" branded phones. That, or they're just going to have to get used to the scuffs, scratches, bends, screen delamination, and other issues that come along with aluminum.

If you prefer it uncovered and don't mind it getting dinged, fine with me. There are two main reasons why I put a case on my phone. 1) the things are like holding a greased peeled potato, and 2) I usually trade my phone.

Also expect to get scratches and tiny marks even using a case, any dust that gets trapped inside the case will cause damage to the aluminium... had this happened before with iPhone 7

Probably around $1500-$2000 over the last 10+ years. Yeah haven’t made that many claims. Apple surely makes a killing off of me, but it’s much less than what I pay my auto insurance.

I have plenty classic aluminium iPhones and they all look perfect with zero dents or scratches. Just use a case and everything will be fine.
Sure but you really shouldn't have to cover your fancy & expensive phone in a case to prevent damage to it. That really defeats the whole purpose. Like, why even make the phone look good if you never see it? Very stupid

I suspect if you dropped my aluminum car off a bridge it would have a few chips also.

You should use a protective case.

All phones sustain cosmetic damage if dropped onto a solid surface, there’s nothing that can be done to stop that other than applying a case. Even if your phone is made of titanium, it’ll still suffer bumps and scrapes. That’s why I use cases. If they ever release a near indestructible phone, I’ll go case-less. Until then I’ll air on the side of caution.

They have though in comparison steel and titanium and pretty darn tough. Aluminum is not.

For the final time, it is not merely my "opinion" or an "assumption" that titanium is stronger and more durable than aluminium.

It is an established, incontrovertible scientific fact.

There is no titanium phone, and there is no aluminum phone. Therer are iPhones with titanium alloys and aluminum alloys, which are not the same thing as pure titanium and pure aluminum, so such comparisons are kinda meaningless without more specifics. For example, grade 1 titanium is softer than 6061-T6 aluminum.

As for this picture and all the whining...buy a $20 case and call it a day.
