I asked if his iPhone and remote app were up-to-date as this may have caused an issue to him not using the remote app via ATV 4.

I'm currently still at work so I can play around with my new ATV 4 yet. The only thing I could think of is that there is a new update for remote app, that needs to be done and hasn't been released yet.
Sorry, I was confused by your wording. Makes sense.

I hope they update it soon. Not looking forward to typing in my login information into all the various services when I first set up my ATV.

It has happened before, where the Remote app fell behind Apple releases. Can't remember if it was when the iPad was launched or another one of the iPhone launches. Generally they update it quickly.

I think this is clearly not intentional. Apple just hasn't released the update for the Remote.app yet. IIRC the same thing has happened with previous generation Apple TV releases and they always update the app pretty quickly.

anyone able to get the iphone remote app connected or we need an update?? def is not working for me

Having to reenter all these 3d party services passwords with the new touch remote is PAINFUL. C'mon Apple.....you should have updated the Remote App by now!!

Apple may be waiting till 1 PM ET to update 3rd generation Apple TV and the remote.
That makes sense since if they haven't put out the 3rd generation software update it's safe to assume they will do both at the same time, we hope. I would think they wouldn't update the remote app till get make update for the old atv available since it might not work with the old software on the old gen.

This no Remote app thing is killing me. The onscreen keyboard on this thing is horrible. It takes me about two and a half minutes to login to services on average as I have unique secure passwords on each with upper and lower case letters as well as numbers and symbols. And the trackpad is as clumsy as the Remotes app's trackpad was at precision selection. They absolutely need to get an update out ASAP. Today. The current onscreen keyboard is nothing short of a horrible user experience.

In theory yes. In reality, I can't get my Apple Wireless Keyboard to pair. :|

Unfortunately Apple has only now updated its support page after the new Apple TV and Magic Keyboard have been released to say neither of them work with each other or any other version.

https://support.apple.com/en-nz/HT202670

The dependence on the Lightning cable for pairing was the writing on the wall (and the dev kits not working ether). However, you can pair a brand new Magic Keyboard with your old Apple TV if you haven't paired the keyboard with anything else before.

Apple is gimping these products to force you to buy a Mac for your desktop web browsing and email, and to some extent to buy an iPad Pro to use an Apple keyboard with an iPad in the future. The Apple TV could have been great.

Can you pair a Bluetooth keyboard to the new Apple TV? It worked great with the last two generations.

Strangely, no. I can't seem to pair either of my bluetooth keyboards, and my iPhone Remote app doesn't work so I am stuck with the handheld remote for controlling the keyboard 0 at least for now.

I want to chime in here as well I am at the same issue. I am seriously considering boxing this bad boy up and taking it right back to apple. This is some serious BS. My old apple tv was working pretty well. I upgraded so that i could be ready for plex and stream stuff from my computer. I can not abide not having a software remote at this point that has become the norm

yep I let tim cook and crew know that not having a software remote for entering text was a solid deal breaker for me. I am already pulling it out of service and putting my old apple tv 3 in its place. I know it sound petty but when i want to search for something i do not want to hunt and peck with the onscreen keyboard
