BUT JOZ SAID WE DON'T WANT A CHAT BOT

Seriously that guy just needs to get away from Apple, he's toxic

"Hey Siri: why do things I discuss when my phone is in my pocket magically show up as ads on my phone shortly after?"

"Hey Siri: why do I have to unlock my iPhone before you'll do things you're supposed to be able to do WITHOUT me having to unlock my iPhone?"

"Hey Siri: why can't you adjust the playback volume on my iPhone without an internet connection when you supposedly run natively on my iPhone?"

26.4 is gonna be a fun update.

I just put my phone into Airplane mode and asked Siri to raise and then lower the volume. She complied perfectly both times.

I think the time that Apple could make something incredible cool out of Siri are over. They will never catch up. Even the core Siri was crap in comparison to other personal assistants, it is years behind. I just don't see any commitment by Apple to change that. If they cannot even develop a decent novel and appealing GUI (I still hate the glass GUI) why should I believe they could deliver on something complex as AI and an AI personal assistant. I still don't know what all the employees at Apple do? Are they all working in marketing?

You don't see because Apple isn't showing. That's to be expected.

People forget that Apple hardware is delivering on its promise perfectly... enabling millions of consumers to access the world's technology, including AI from all competitors. Want to use Claude on your Mac? It's ready. Want to use some little-known open model? Go ahead. It works.

Apple competing on every front is silly. Will Siri evolve eventually? Absolutely! Why did it have to be first? We've all seen the embarrassment created by the other frontier models, and the risk to users. Apple was smart to take their time. That is a strength, not a weakness.

I think Apple are so far behind the AI curve now, and Siri already has a very bad reputation, I’m not convinced they’ll make any sort of dent. They should probably just accept they need to use the leaders technology in this space and focus on showing their strengths in hardware and being innovative again.
It's amazing how wedded they are to the Siri name, when it's a busted brand

Given that on its launch, ChatGPT grew to be one of the fasted consumer brands ever - and Apple still thought that they didn't need to make a chatbot

it's amazing how badly they misjudged the AI explosion

I have always been very into tech and gadgets and computers and I have never considered myself a luddite in any way, but I just do not see the appeal of chatbots. Even back when SmarterChild and stuff like that was around, I didn't see the value in them beyond the novelty of it.

I'm all for a smarter Siri that will understand my requests better and have a better memory of past requests, but I don't want to chat with it. I ask it to do a task and expect the task to be done, end of. If Apple can deliver on the promise of the "when did my mom say she was coming to town?" question, I'll be happy with it. I couldn't care less about conversing with it.

Siri will integrate into all Apple apps, including Photos, Mail, Messages, Music, and TV, and it will be able to access and analyze content in the apps to respond to queries and requests. There will be voice and type-based interface options.
I forget, was it iOS 9 where this was first promised and demoed? It's been a number of years in any case.
AI panic aside, I'd love to see this feature finally delivered and reliable.

It’s something people talked about well over a year ago. Siri the chatbot is the next big thing for Apple. But can it be any good with Gemini running it. Or apples control of data for “privacy” reasons of course.

That remains to be seen. However this is pretty big if it does what is mentioned.

It just begs the question for me though. Shouldn’t android be much better though? Google assistant is their Siri. I’m hearing Gemini is terrible for doing the things assistant did. https://www.theverge.com/news/848455/google-assistant-gemini-upgrade-2026. Even Google is having issues replacing assistant with Gemini. The major complaint is how slow it is compared to a light voice assistant. Not as integrated.

IMHO the Siri name should be put to rest. Its reputation is too tarnished, and doing an overhaul (yet again) is also the perfect opportunity to rebrand.

It is almost a lock that there will be 2 versions: a free, more limited experience and second full-tilt version that will, of course, justify the additional $4.99 bump/mo for Apple One. Maybe it'll actually be useful. Maybe not. Come WWDC, we'll start to get a better idea.

It is exactly that
It's not quite that, as Gemini implies it's running on Google servers and feeding Google data, which it is not (or at least not as per the rumors).

A better analogy is that of a browser engine. Brave and Vivaldi both use the same Chromium engine that underpins Chrome, but it's been customized for privacy and does not have any of the added Google-ification that Chrome has. The "new" Siri is said to work the same way, utilizing the same LLMs that underpin Gemini, but heavily customized for Apple's needs and privacy standards.

Yep. When people say Apple has already lost the race, I think they're really underselling the ways Apple can realistically catch up. Apple can give consumers the free, "good enough" version of AI that's subsidized by hardware purchases. If it can match what the average person is using OpenAI for these days -- web searches, writing assistance, answering questions -- that'll be huge during a time when the hardware-less AI companies are going to need to start jamming ads into the service or charging subscriptions for what they're giving away for free now. If you want the better version of Apple/Gemini AI, you can pay the monthly fee or it'll be included in a pricey Apple One subscription. It's not unlike how Apple has positioned Pages/Keynote/Numbers against Microsoft Office.

Yes that will true, but experience wise if you want to know what it will be like go to Gemini now and ask it a few questions.

The memory component needs to be a user setting. It's no different from choosing to keep all your text messages. Also, OpenAI and others have already solved this with temporary chats similar to the incognito window in web browsers.

Siri will need to have an app. Chatbots are popular in large part because you can continue a conversation over days, weeks, months, and years. If you use Siri to create an AppleScript and then want to add another feature, it's more efficient to continue where you left off instead of starting from scratch. I'm sure Apple knows this so the report doesn't make sense on this point.

I and the people I know use chatgpt to collect information and data. It’s much better than search engines because there aren’t sponsored links or ads.

I like this idea, hopefully they include some Plus-style incentives for subscribers to Apple One.
I hope they don't. I hope it's good enough and free. After all, we are already paying for its development when we buy Apple devices. But it must be available under subscription, it better be good, because otherwise I will renew the Claude subscription instead.
