"Hey Siri: why do things I discuss when my phone is in my pocket magically show up as ads on my phone shortly after?"
"Hey Siri: why do I have to unlock my iPhone before you'll do things you're supposed to be able to do WITHOUT me having to unlock my iPhone?"
"Hey Siri: why can't you adjust the playback volume on my iPhone without an internet connection when you supposedly run natively on my iPhone?"
26.4 is gonna be a fun update.
I think the time that Apple could make something incredible cool out of Siri are over. They will never catch up. Even the core Siri was crap in comparison to other personal assistants, it is years behind. I just don't see any commitment by Apple to change that. If they cannot even develop a decent novel and appealing GUI (I still hate the glass GUI) why should I believe they could deliver on something complex as AI and an AI personal assistant. I still don't know what all the employees at Apple do? Are they all working in marketing?
It's amazing how wedded they are to the Siri name, when it's a busted brandI think Apple are so far behind the AI curve now, and Siri already has a very bad reputation, I’m not convinced they’ll make any sort of dent. They should probably just accept they need to use the leaders technology in this space and focus on showing their strengths in hardware and being innovative again.
Given that on its launch, ChatGPT grew to be one of the fasted consumer brands ever - and Apple still thought that they didn't need to make a chatbotBUT JOZ SAID WE DON'T WANT A CHAT BOT
Seriously that guy just needs to get away from Apple, he's toxic
Apple's history with Siri and AI doesn't leave me optimistic.
Pardon my naivety—but how is this not just a whitelabeled Gemini app?
I forget, was it iOS 9 where this was first promised and demoed? It's been a number of years in any case.Siri will integrate into all Apple apps, including Photos, Mail, Messages, Music, and TV, and it will be able to access and analyze content in the apps to respond to queries and requests. There will be voice and type-based interface options.
It is exactly that
It's not quite that, as Gemini implies it's running on Google servers and feeding Google data, which it is not (or at least not as per the rumors). It is exactly that
Yep. When people say Apple has already lost the race, I think they're really underselling the ways Apple can realistically catch up. Apple can give consumers the free, "good enough" version of AI that's subsidized by hardware purchases. If it can match what the average person is using OpenAI for these days -- web searches, writing assistance, answering questions -- that'll be huge during a time when the hardware-less AI companies are going to need to start jamming ads into the service or charging subscriptions for what they're giving away for free now. If you want the better version of Apple/Gemini AI, you can pay the monthly fee or it'll be included in a pricey Apple One subscription. It's not unlike how Apple has positioned Pages/Keynote/Numbers against Microsoft Office. It is almost a lock that there will be 2 versions: a free, more limited experience and second full-tilt version that will, of course, justify the additional $4.99 bump/mo for Apple One. Maybe it'll actually be useful. Maybe not. Come WWDC, we'll start to get a better idea.
It's not quite that, as Gemini implies it's running on Google servers and feeding Google data, which it is not (or at least not as per the rumors).
A better analogy is that of a browser engine. Brave and Vivaldi both use the same Chromium engine that underpins Chrome, but it's been customized for privacy and does not have any of the added Google-ification that Chrome has. The "new" Siri is said to work the same way, utilizing the same LLMs that underpin Gemini, but heavily customized for Apple's needs and privacy standards.
It is exactly that
I and the people I know use chatgpt to collect information and data. It’s much better than search engines because there aren’t sponsored links or ads.I have always been very into tech and gadgets and computers and I have never considered myself a luddite in any way, but I just do not see the appeal of chatbots. Even back when SmarterChild and stuff like that was around, I didn't see the value in them beyond the novelty of it.
I'm all for a smarter Siri that will understand my requests better and have a better memory of past requests, but I don't want to chat with it. I ask it to do a task and expect the task to be done, end of. If Apple can deliver on the promise of the "when did my mom say she was coming to town?" question, I'll be happy with it. I couldn't care less about conversing with it.
I hope they don't. I hope it's good enough and free. After all, we are already paying for its development when we buy Apple devices. But it must be available under subscription, it better be good, because otherwise I will renew the Claude subscription instead.I like this idea, hopefully they include some Plus-style incentives for subscribers to Apple One.
