If Apple opts against releasing a standalone chatbot app, I wonder if they'll just let us start conversations with Siri in Messages.

This is an interesting idea but it would not work. There's too much risk of sending a prompt to a person. Also, the number of chats with a chatbot far outnumbers the number of chats you have with people. The chatbot chats would clog Messages. Siri needs an app with folders and subfolders and search just like email because that's how voluminous chatbot chats become once you tap into their power.

Yes that will true, but experience wise if you want to know what it will be like go to Gemini now and ask it a few questions.

Pre-training comes from Google for sure. But Apple will be doing fine-tuning.

With that, the character of the model may change significantly. Also, they want to optimize OS integration (teaching how to drive OS APIs).

While I expect the general "IQ" of the to be preserved well, I am not optimistic for Apple necessarily being expert in improving the overall experience. Instead I expect Apple to be more cautious and thus the model to be less useful than Google Gemini. Expect more of "I cannot discuss this topic, is there something else I can help you with?".

It is almost a lock that there will be 2 versions: a free, more limited experience and second full-tilt version that will, of course, justify the additional $4.99 bump/mo for Apple One. Maybe it'll actually be useful. Maybe not. Come WWDC, we'll start to get a better idea.
Probably. Fine. Not an Apple One subscriber here. I believe they will also offer a paid version without AO. I don’t need/want her so, as long as I can turn her off I’m happy.

So, why would I want to use a Siri chatbot, especially considering Apple's track record with with Siri and AI, when I can simply use the Google Gemini app itself? Also, I assume that as Gemini evolves, the native Gemini app will be available with those new features and upgrades well before the Siri chatbot does.

I and the people I know use chatgpt to collect information and data. It’s much better than search engines because there aren’t sponsored links or ads.
I wouldn't trust the thing that can't tell you how many Rs are in 'strawberry' to provide accurate information or data, so I'd be double-checking its work, and at that point why not just go straight to the double-checking part and cut out the chatbot? Is it really just to avoid ads?

And I'm not opposed to that sort of thing, I ask Siri how old an actor is or how many ounces are in a cup all the time. But I don't need to have a conversation with it to get what I want to know.

I typically find the chatbot thing (pretending to be human and emotional and it speaking with pronouns) to be annoying. I want a computer to provide answers. I don’t want a digital pal or a cheeky chappy. That sheet gets old very quickly. If I ask how tall or old someone is, or if they are alive just tell me the answer. The faux personality is so 2010. And now they’re adding in fake breaths. Just stop ✋

For those of you on older hardware I would expect this to be coming to everything iPhone 12 and newer because it's running server side.

I think, because no-one has used any of the AI powered features that Apple had pinned their AI efforts on, they've now realised what people *actually* use AI for
They’ve not only now realised this. They live in the world. They don’t just jump on bandwagons and generally don’t function behind the scenes in panic mode.

Personally don’t like how conversational modes happen on most chatbots. I just want recall of what I said so it knows the context of my question. I don’t want it to have any programmed personality.

Correction Bloomberg. Siri the chatbot will NOT rival Google’s Gemini.

It WILL be Google’s Gemini.

This is why no one trusts the media. Just one week after Google’s and Apple’s JOINT announcement Bloomberg forgets that they announced that Gemini will power Siri and all of Apple Intelligence.

It will compete with Google Gemini similar to how Safari's search box competes with Chrome's search box and the search box on Google's home page. Google would prefer direct users but it also benefits from its Apple relationship.

Said before, saying again.

I’ll believe it when I see it
I’ve also been saying that I am not going to update my phone or my MacBook until 27.1 which will be the debugged Golden Master out of beta v26.

Now that Chatbot Siri is rolling out for v27.0….I’m doubling down on waiting until AT LEAST v27.1

It’ll compete like how Chevrolet competes with Buick inside General Motors.

Apple (Buick) will market Gemini (Chevrolet) as something special and upmarket. And apart from the slight body style differentiation and upscale interior it’s the same General Motors (Google) derived engine and drivetrain.

Beat me to it.

Apple deserves all the cynicism after officially joining the rentier class with the ridiculous Apple Creator Studio that bundled decidedly NON Pro app like the previously free and non-hobbled Pages, Numbers, and Keynote as well as hobbling the once great and paid for Pixelmator. For crying out loud…you have to pay Apple $129 a year to get warp functions in Pixelmator ?

Screw you Apple

"Hey Siri: why do things I discuss when my phone is in my pocket magically show up as ads on my phone shortly after?"
The good news is the Mac mini does not have a microphone. I hope I don't have to take apart the laptop just to permanently remove the microphone.

"Hey Siri: why do things I discuss when my phone is in my pocket magically show up as ads on my phone shortly after?"

"Hey Siri: why do I have to unlock my iPhone before you'll do things you're supposed to be able to do WITHOUT me having to unlock my iPhone?"

"Hey Siri: why can't you adjust the playback volume on my iPhone without an internet connection when you supposedly run natively on my iPhone?"
Three questions we’re not supposed to ask 😳
