The good news is the Mac mini does not have a microphone.
How do we know that?

Although it’s not listed on the spec sheet, gathering data is so profitable it’s hard to imagine them resisting the urge to listen in.

Great. How do I turn that off so my tinfoil hat android user friends don’t kick me out of the Discord for having an iPhone and a MacBook?

Siri will integrate into all Apple apps, including Photos, Mail, Messages, Music, and TV, and it will be able to access and analyze content in the apps to respond to queries and requests. There will be voice and type-based interface options.

I'm very curious about the technical aspects of this. For some reason I can't imagine Apple simply implementing MCP in their software.

Maybe Apple could parter with Anthropic for operating system “cowork”. If Apple does pick & choose & connect multiple systems with their own “coordinator”, they could maintain flexibility of providers, like they do with parts and assembly. If Apple Intelligence focused on a “coordinator” & on device with privacy preserving server supported backup, they could mediate the entire AI industry using their devices & OSs.

i am glad to see that its being built into the operating system.
although the macrumors article uses the word chatbot the same article also clearly says its not quite a usual chatbot.
i don't even think its necessary or useful to brand it Siri either. Apple Intelligence is a great marketing name, i think.

i just want to press the side button and that glorious Apple Intelligence muti-colour display edge lights up.
that's wild when i would accidentally hit that button.

but i have disabled that function now, and turned off Siri for the time being since its almost entirely useless right now.
looking forward to the new incarnation of it. at iOS level, with screen content awareness.

So putting 1 and 1 together we see that “Siri” is going to be a reskinned Gemini. And ALL your data, every last bit is going to be uploaded to Google.

This just plain sucks! I wonder if I can even continue to use HomeKit without Google monitoring my HomePod 24x7x365. My guess is the assurance will be yes. And the truth will be no.

I wouldn't trust the thing that can't tell you how many Rs are in 'strawberry' to provide accurate information or data, so I'd be double-checking its work, and at that point why not just go straight to the double-checking part and cut out the chatbot? Is it really just to avoid ads?

And I'm not opposed to that sort of thing, I ask Siri how old an actor is or how many ounces are in a cup all the time. But I don't need to have a conversation with it to get what I want to know.
And the really awful thing about AI search is that it's killing traffic to websites, so many of them will go under. Then, it'll be slop feeding on slop.

So you want to continue having a "smartphone" that's actually dumb. Good for you.
I have yet to find something a chatbot might actually be useful for. I don't care about Siri, I stopped using it on my iPhone 5. It was fun to ask it silly questions, but was never actually useful.

Siri: gives you Google search results.
ChatGPT: Tells people to kill themselves.
Microsoft: Used to assist in war crimes
Grok: Sexual harassment and CSAM at the click of a button.

And somehow I'm supposed to believe Siri is the worst of these products.
Also lets not forget most of these AI initiatives can't break a profit and they all have to beg the president for handouts to stay afloat.

Hope it works well and that most of it's features will be available on day one of release instead of 2027. Should be very useful if it works as intended.

It looks as if I’ve been misunderstanding the Siri/Apple-Intelligence rumours for a while now. Until reading this article I’d thought that the chatbot functionality was what we were supposed to be getting with iOS 26.4 in March or April but I guess not. I’m now confused about just what will be better about the new improved Siri that (I think?) is still rumoured to be coming in March/April if that isn’t going to be the Gemini-powered chatbot stuff.

I’m also now concerned about how long I’m going to have to wait before buying my first HomePod (a HomePod Mini). Given how much the quality of the smart assistant affects the smart speaker user experience I’ve thought for many months now that it makes most sense for Apple to wait until new improved Siri is available before releasing the new HomePod(s) and had assumed that would mean a delay until April May but now I fear that delay might be until the chatbot version in June.

I currently use both Amazon and Google/Nest smart speakers in most rooms because both have strengths and notable weaknesses. I have faith in the quality of Apple hardware so if the new improved Siri can deliver a good smart assistant (at least as good as Google Assistant which is already much better than Amazon Alexa) then I’ll happily sell all my Amazon and Google smart speakers and go all-in on HomePods and Apple Home but I don’t want to start that process with (according to rumours) soon-to-be-superseded hardware and not until the world gets to see how this new improved Siri performs in real life.

Oh well, as long as the M5 Pro MacBook Pro comes out soon that should keep me distracted for a while, probably quite a while since it will mark my move to MacOS after over 30 years as a Windows user. I am getting really excited now about making that transition.

I use Heygen, Claude and OpenArtAI with some more occasional things here and there. Wonder if Campos (dreadful name btw) can replace them somehow. Siri doesn't know anything and can't do anything, lets be frank here.

It is almost a lock that there will be 2 versions: a free, more limited experience and second full-tilt version that will, of course, justify the additional $4.99 bump/mo for Apple One. Maybe it'll actually be useful. Maybe not. Come WWDC, we'll start to get a better idea.
I think you’re right. Personally I wouldn’t even have a use for any of those advanced features. I’d rather not have them and I certainly don’t want a price bump to Apple One. Should be an interesting WWDC

"Hey Siri: why do I have to unlock my iPhone before you'll do things you're supposed to be able to do WITHOUT me having to unlock my iPhone?"
Yeah, my number one pet-peeve aside from nightstand mode not working efficiently any more. My work phone (Fold 7) answers me quickly and efficiently every time.

26.4 will be personalised Siri which is Gemini but one in iOS 27 will be even bigger

It has long made sense to have a history of your Siri chats rather than having them be ephemeral

I don't think even Apple can answer your question.
