A whole new version of Buyer's Remorse

A high end mac will last you a good 5-7 years, easily! A phone will last you no more than two years before the battery starts acting up, or it is slowed down. iPhone(s) are now over $1k!
A car will only last two years until the tires start wearing down. So what are you doing? You get new tires. Phone batteries are like car tires, they are consumables.

Not really, the phone will lose support for its OS, and eventually applications will stop supporting it. You get new tires on a car, and you're good for another two years.

Yeah... maybe I'm jaded from decades of computer usage and upgrading, or maybe I'm burnt-out ... or maybe the updates just aren't what they used to be. But it's been a long time since I was truly excited by some new piece of tech. These days, I just upgrade occasionally, so I know I'm not falling behind the curve. But it feels like I'm on that treadmill that they expect me to stay on if I'm going to keep my career in tech....

I had the version 0 Apple Watch on day 1, because my wife stayed up late that night to pre-order me one as an anniversary gift. I wore it mostly because it was a gift and found it "meh... kind of handy". Just wasn't thrilled by it though. I will say, when I finally resold it and jumped to a Series 3? Now I feel like the product performs the way it should have all along, and I like it a lot better. Still doesn't "thrill" me though.

I had a little bit of fun that reminded me of the "good old days" when I started playing with HomeKit, setting up electronic door locks and such. But again -- all the glitches and flaws in the products put a damper on the excitement pretty quickly. Now I've kind of put the whole project on pause -- questioning the value for the dollar to add any more automation right now.

The "next big thing" seems to be VR and AR, but again - not a big deal.

Personally, the thrill of a new device just doesn't have the same excitement as purchases from years ago. I still have fond memories of my first really powerful graphics card, the Radeon HD 3870.

I think there's also a large dose of "decision fatigue" in our lives, where we have so many valid options at our disposal that our brains can't handle it. Whatever we just decided to buy, we almost certainly have regrets because we question if what we just got was "the right choice." Best I can say is, carefully plan your purchase (try to have guidelines for when to purchase), and then try not to look back!

Anyone else in the same boat as me?

Nope. As someone who likes to upgrade and expand computer hardware, each new Mac model actually seems worse to me. Fewer slots, fewer bays, fewer ports, and more soldered components. Ugh.

However, I'm looking forward to seeing what Apple does with the 2019 modular Mac Pro.

I experience this almost every time I walk out of an Apple store with a product (or in my usual case multiple products) in a bag. I never regret buying anything, but more so have instant anxiety that whatever I bought will be replaced a newer, cooler, more powerful, sleeker version of itself in no time.
It's crazy how quickly something becomes obsolete nowadays and I think this is amped up to a degree with Apple stuff. Anyone else in the same boat as me?

Buy yourself a Mac Pro or a Mac Mini, they NEVER update these things if that helps you feel any better. ;)

These days, I'm more worried that things I put off buying will be replaced by something more expensive and not as good (but 10% thinner and a slight CPU/GPU improvement that you will only notice when timing benchmarks with a stopwatch).

Ah, for the good old days when the new model would be twice as fast, half the size and cheaper than what you bought 12 months ago (which probably made people more forgiving about any design changes they didn't like).
