Can't believe that the major networks did not cover this. Just tuned in to see News Channel * cover it live.. Congrats to the pilot! And thank God for the safe landing.

That went smooth. :)
I bet that's screwed up the runway for the rest of the day.

EDIT: Just watched it again. Damn that was a straight landing, didn't seem to deviate from the centre line at all. That guy's going to get a good reception.

OT:phone numbers wanted

Anyone have ready access to the phone numbers of the networks? It is tragic that they did not cover this. I have been watching CBS since 8PM and I had to find out about this by you all on MR!

you dont have cable? it was all over cnn...they probably dont have their wednesday night shows to worry about...:(
anyway, on a lighter note i loved when after the front tire caught fire larry king said "was that fire we just saw?" :p
it's great to see that everyone was all right though, and amazing that the pilot kept the plane as straight as he did!

Yeah I noticed how he stayed on the center line. Also he stopped at the end of one of these lines. Great landing!

Ok people, back to our boring lives.
Does it make me a bad person that (now all are safe) I'm just thinking those air stewardesses will be looking to wind down tonight, wonder which bar they'll be going to for drinks right now?

Phew! Thank god it wasnt disaster. The landing was very cleverly done. Hats off to the person flying that plane. Man I'm so glad this went well. So much doom and gloom comming out of the US lately, one disaster after another. I wonder wether the live news broadcasters would have continued with coverage had it gone pear shaped??

Just from reading this thread I want to puke. Are we really to the state that we sit around watching tragity unfold right next to McDonalds ads?

You're right, I'm switching back to the late night porn channel.

the airbus A320 does not have the ability to dump fuel, so they had to fly around and burn it off before reaching a safe landing weight.....it was quite close to the end of a 12,000 foot runway anyway, imagine if it had had more inertia...

im so glad, apparently the passengers could have been watching live fox coverage on board!!!!

Actually, from the perspective of someone who knows a fair bit about aircraft, this isn't that big of a deal. The landing gear won't cause too much more drag on one side or the other, so the pilot can line up easy. Then the pilot touches down with a high angle of attack, essentially, the nose pointed up high and the plane 'mushing' through the air as slow as possible. The rear wheels touch first, and the pilot holds them as long as possible.

Once enough airspeed has bleed away that the nose can't stay in the air, the pilot gently lets the nose down. (Don't let a stall do it for you, that is Bad) Then the gear (we assume) collapses, and the nose skids a bit along the foam.

(kinda off-topic) Aircraft have been doing this for years. B-17s in WWII had to do this, often with bullet holes and on occasion bombs still in the bay. When there were live bombs on board and you couldn't ditch them, the pilot usually made sure everyone bailed out before pointing the aircraft towards sea before jumping himself.(end!)

Some of us had a choice between cable with all the channels, or "basic" cable with cable modem. Guess what I went with.

The thing that gets me is that the first reports went up here at 8:36PM. Here it is 9:56PM and not a single mention on CBS. I flipped through some others and there was nothing there either.

Since late Spring and early Summer I have chosen to try to watch less TV. In order to devote more time to iTunes library and other computer/internet pursuits.

In the end I am questioning the networks news "judgments". They gave me minute by minute accounts as a storm (Katrina) approach New Orleans. But this they could not even give me a 60 second update on. But you can be sure that that if the pilot did not have the skill to control the landing, and it ended in a fiery crash - they would have been all over it.

More important to protect "premiere" week viewer-ship I guess than to give us real news.

If I were a flight attendant on that flight, I would give every passenger three of those small bottles as they deplaned.

No, I was not hoping for some "OJ chase scene"; but some mention in the past hour and half or so in "news brief" would have been nice. For you know if it had not ended as well as it had, the networks would have been all over it.

All I wanted was an news update as to what was unfolding. For I am the one behind you that blows his horn if you pause to look at an accident scene.

I have worked in advertising. The networks could have given up commercial airtime to give us a "news brief" and then given the advertisers a "make good" later on.

Here it is 10:44PM, and there was a less than 15 second "news brief" on WRC TV New 4 (NBC - an owned and operated station) that first mentioned Rita, and then Flight 92.

Shameful.

I heard on the radio that they moved as many passengers as possible to the rear of the plane, and the carry-on luggage too, to make the plane as tail-heavy as possible. It looks like very good planning and execution.

Hmmm that's funny, on my local news channel they had this aviation expert on the phone as it was happening and he said that they probably wouldn't have all the passengers move to the rear so that the plane could be more balanced. IMO, it would have made sense to move them all to the back for that very reason you mentioned.

Nonetheless, the pilot did a good job.

It was 11:06PM ON WRC NBC4, which is an owned an operated station for them to make the first real mention of this event. Rita, led the news.

2 1/2 hours after the first reports, and we get just a 15 second news blurp.

Glad that I am weaning myself from the TV. After tonight, I think that will rely on the internet for my news. In particular those you MR.

I don't know much about planes, but that landing looked mighty impressive.

Jeez, talk about coming through whent the pressure's on!

Somebody buy that pilot a beer!
